If the name Petain sounds familiar...thats because it is. Petain was the PM of Vichy France during WW2. He's portrayed as a hero in this episode but his legacy is infamous to Frenchmen.

He was an 80-plus year old and probably senile man in 1940. By 1942 he was brushed aside and it was Laval who ran things in Vichy. I would not equate him to Quisling. I'm not defending him, but at least he stayed in 1940 when everyone else bailed to London. He saved France in 1917 when the Army revolted against Nivelle and his callous slaughter at Chamin Des Dames. Petain was the only man the Army would trust and knew he actually cared for his men.

Petain is the classic example of a formidable and beloved general, but a poor leader. I will allways make a difference between the army man and the political animal. As a politician he made choises that may damn him in the eyes of everyone and history for all times to be. But as a general, when his country needed him the most, he stood like a rock against immense odds. He took men into battle and they knew he would only send them if the chance of succes was present. He lamented the blood he had to spill and when Nivelle caused the army to mutiny, the army was not given another commander but a father in Petain. What made him as a General was that he was not afraid to send men. But he would not waste them.

I am afraid that they took some liberties with strick historical accuracy in order to put Indiana Jones at the Battle of Verdun.

There where no Belgian units fighting at Verdun during the First World War! There was how ever one Belgian soldier who where killed there in 1940 and he is burried at the French military cemetery Faubourg Pavé in the north-eastern part of the town of Verdun.

'Indy' looks like a mix of Michael J Fox and Mark Hamill. But he looks nothing like Harrison Ford.

In the trilogy (set in the 1930s), Indy was in his 30’s. During WW1, he was in his teens.
