Isn’t that how life usually works … people drift in and out of your life from the past … reminiscing for a few fleeting moments in time … then those folks drift away again. Sometimes they return … sometimes … you keep the memories alive in your heart … your mind. One day you catch a song on the radio … much like Desert Moon. The cobwebs are swept away … and you are again with those folks from years past. For a few moments …. Time reverses and all those emotions come back.

This song came out when I was a teen. Just a kid. Now I'm 51 and I can say this song and video, in an extremely simplistic way, summarizes life. You'll never forget that first love. Going home and visiting the old spots is sweet and sad at the same time. You realize everything that used to be is no longer. Good buddies are still good buddies though. That never changes. The same jokes and stories will always be told and shared decade after decade as long as there's time to get together and talk.

I never would have admitted it as a 15 year old in 84, but I loved this song and video. When he gave that cherry ‘65 to his brother, even back then, the tears came. It’s crazy. I was 15, never had a girlfriend or been in love, but this song me made long for a time I had yet to experience. In the four decades since, love has come and gone many times. And every time, I find myself revisiting this song. THAT, friends, is the hallmark of good writing, a little cheesy for some, but some of those lyrics simply rip at the pieces of my heart. Thanks Dennis…

The 80s without a shadow of doubt the greatest ever decade musically wise especially up to mid 80s. The music, ,bands ,solo artists, ,the images, the contrast in music, the originality we will not see its like again. Anyone who grew up in this era know exactly what I'm talking about. Even TV Miami Vice etc Movies, Breakfast Club ,Ferris Bueller,Sixteen Candles, etc .Hard to put into words what a special time it was but those of us who were there know exactly how special it was.The furtherwe go awayfromthe 80s the more we realisee how lucky and privilegedwe were to have been there. We will not see its like again. .Thank goodness for KZitem for giving us the opportunity to revisit those times that make us happy and sad at the same time yearning for a truly fabulous era.

The 80's were the best. Everybody gets all nostalgic about their own favorite era, but think about it. Technology was pretty decent without being intrusive and overbearing. A person could still make mistakes in life and overcome them without being hounded by those mistakes for a lifetime, or being publicly crucified within seconds for making them. It wasn't perfect, but with all of the thought policing that goes on nowadays (say what you like, but it is 1000x times worse and more Orwellian than it was back then), relentlessness of technology, toxic cynicism, etc....I'd go back today if I could, in a heartbeat. A person could work hard, study, build a life and get ahead, improve their lot in life. Health care was pretty decent. Again, not going to get drawn into ridiculous and pointless debates about details that I think (yep, I'm less than perfect) are comparatively petty, or the obvious imperfections of the universe versus our own unrealistic expectations, etc. Smart phones and the internet are great, sure, but a person could still make his/her way in the world just fine back then....and live, and love. Paper maps, phone books, a little effort and dive into the mysteries of the open road (to mix a few metaphors lol). Sure, I'm happy now...but it is increasingly the case that I'm happy in spite of "things," not because of them. The world was indeed a better place back then. Rant and flame away....either you get what I'm saying, or you don't. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything. Peace, y'all...and '85 forever!

My college roommate and I watched the world premiere of this video on MTV in 1984. After the opening scene, Jim turned to me and said: "I had no idea where they were going with that." “I still can hear the whispers of a summer nights” is the lyric. But, yeah, I get it. It’s a great lyric. When someone tells me to go to my happy place, I close my eyes and think about driving around aimlessly in my white 1983 Audi Quattro with my first girlfriend, blaring songs like this on my Blaupunkt stereo with Alpine speakers. “Those were the best days of my life”, to quote Bryan Adams.

I know this reply is so trite. But oh so true. You don't know what you have until it's gone. I had just lost my first love the year before. This song runs deep into my soul and memory. The funny thing is even back then I knew the times were special, so unique, so precious. Yet I lived them as though they'd be here forever. Ah! The naiveties of youth. Yet I'm so privileged to have been in my prime at that time. And experienced the best of times.

This is now added to the list from a tape from October-December 1984 when I was recording a bunch of songs off of MTV.
