Laziness and fear can look very similar from an outside perspective, as both prevent action moving forward.

We are trained only to be clinician ! How do we learn scheduling?

Hi Divya, There are great resources out there to help with scheduling, perhaps Dr. Rice could share some of those. One of the first things I do as a hygienist is schedule my patients’ recare from my chair. I know my patients and I know the time and care they need. I also have my practice goals in mind when I schedule. I make those pieces fit together as I build my schedule. This also requires knowing what your patient’s next appointment will be. Will there be x-rays? Will there be SDF? Fluoride? Make sure all procedures are attached to the next appointment scheduled. When my schedule is about 75% full, I look to see how close I am to meeting/exceeding my production goals for that day. If I’m above goal, I block some time for reviewing charts etc… If I’m short, I block the remaining time for productive procedures and I communicate that with the front desk. I assign a specific minimum dollar amount to that time block. My normal schedule consists of 6-7 patients allowing for quality patient care, meeting practice goals, and extra time for the non-clinical tasks to be prepared for the days ahead. This type of scheduling takes a different mindset approach. If you have an owning dentist at your office, you would need to communicate with them first about the benefits of scheduling like this and get them on board with testing it out!
