Sabaton is a Swedish band with a loooong list of history based music. Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 100 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public) . Sabaton videos are often have dedictions and/or messages at the end, perhaps not always but, watching to the very end is frequently well worth it. Animated STORY videos (short history lessons with music videos in them) No bullets fly Night witches Lady of the dark Red baron first soldier epic videos. Bismark, about the sinking of the ship Defence of Moscow, self explained. Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914 40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939 (with odds actually close to 55:1 they held for 3 DAYS when ammunition and supplies ran out. Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising against the nazi germans during 1944. To hell and back, they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face. Fields of verdun, the 300+ day long battle fought there. Price of a mile, about the battle of Passchendaele Screaming Eagles, about the battle of the bulge Live performances 40:1 from poland Uprising from poland En livstid I krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles) , very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war. these are just some, there are plenty more.

interesting reaction, and nice to see. but historically, even though the highly trained samurai class was no longer a thing, i believe in both world wars the Japanese army often fell back on the sword after their ammunition ran out. so i would say the age of the samurai may have past, but the age of the sword wielding warrior lasted long after them in Japanese culture. and just like in British culture the sword is still used for ceremonial purposes today. so technically the age of the sword still lives on in some form.

I agree with what you are saying here. It's the matter of mindset that decides the flow of war, I guess. From that point of view, like a Viking, IS, and Samurai, for those who believe in God or paradise after the death, only an honorable way of death is very important. 🎉

If you want an awesome live song with Sabaton you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg 2020. The album Carolus Rex they released during that time is about a part of Swedish history referred to as the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) it was released with both a Swedish and English version, the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our view/a Swedish soldiers view while the English are more from an outsider. It is the Swedish version they played that night so be sure that you have the subtitles on, I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

Japanese military history is something else for sure. I haven't researched it extensively, but from what I know you can alway count on one thing. No matter the odds the Japanese fight bravely to the end. Granted, especially during WWII there is some terrible stuff, but that is by no means unique to Japan. Every country has dark parts to it's history. That aside though no one can say anything but that the Japanese soldiers during WWII fought bravely (to an almost insane degree) every time. And that courage and tenacity has to be respected.

The history of Japan has always been with a sword, just like a European one. It's natural to make a guess that history has always repeated its good and bad sides no matter what they admit or not. 😊

Shiroyama is a great Sabaton song because it's about more than a battle. It's about the end of an era; the traditional Japanese culture giving way to modernization. Unlike the other songs on the album, the samurai aren't trying to protect anything or anyone. They don't have to buy time or hold the line. Their last stand is in a certain sense completely pointless. The samurai die for nothing but their honor, fighting a battle 60:1 that is completely impossible and certainly fatal. Modern Japan had no place for a dedicated warrior caste, all their history, their art. They ignore an offer of surrender because if they fight, their code dies with them; but if they surrender their code died before them. For one last minute, as they reach the enemy line and fight with their swords, their way of life and war is relevant. What they are buying time for isn't a castle, or hill, or people. Their hopless last stand is for an idea. They aren't trying to hold back an army, but the very passage of time.
