Thanks for the images, I am laying in a hospital bed after flying to Argentina to shoot a personal photography and publishing project I had in mind. After sitting on a plane for 13 hours without even moving to go to the bathroom. When I left the plane I collapsed due to the blood clots formed in my legs I’m a tall guy the doctors said I’m lucky to be alive. So here I am watching all my favourite videos about photography and your road trip has inspired me for my next project once I’ve edited the Argentina photos.

Can't believe I just found your channel, great stuff. Not sure if you still have problems with C41. I had a lot of trouble as well, but finally figured it out. My procedure is: 1. heat some water and the developer to a bit over 38C (the desired temperature), pour the water in and just let the film and tank warm up (very important). 2. keep the thermometer in the developer, when it hits 38.2, pour out the water and pour in the developer, the developer should cool down to around 37.9 in the span of development, so you'll stay in the optimum range. Then you should be good, the bleach and fixer are not as critical in terms of temp. To prevent leakage, pour in the bleach/blix, hold down the cap and invert it once, then leak out the air, invert it twice, then leak out the air. Hold down the cap slightly for the rest of the bleach, when you feel the middle of the cap bulbing out, leak out the air. You should be all good.

Maybe your desire to go drink and hang out in bars is the same part of you that allows you to take such empathetic portraits of strangers. I think recently I have been trying to cut myself slack and remind myself that things I may label as bad habits or vices or whatever are the same part of me that allows me to be creative, if I was just in work mode 24/7 I think that I would suffer creatively. All about finding that balance right? In the end you made some great work, hung out with the fam, and made an awesome video! Great job dude. Congrats on getting married!
@BryanBirks
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Balance is indeed key. I’m very lucky that I can have good relationships with my certain vices even though it’s only drinking socially really. The portrait thing is strange. I just think my demeanor and the fact that everyone says my face is familiar has a lot to do with it. Helps people be at ease.

@@BryanBirks I'm sure that's true, but I'm also sure you have an it factor about you that you may not be aware of that allows people to let you in a bit more. I know that's probably impossible for a person to see about themselves but don't discount your whole personality! Even the "bad" parts, or things we do that we don't like about ourselves I guess, can be good my bud. Can't wait to see you and your work translated into Articles of Virtue, your work has inspired me to start of a photo project of my own that I have been working on for some months now so thank you for that Byan.

Another great video Bryan - very relaxing and therapeutic. Over the years I’ve been following you, I enjoy the conversations you have and talk about - how about recording those and incorporate into your images e.g. accompanying QR code in a book etc. Even the guy with the Jeep (who didn’t want his portrait taken) the shot of the Jeep “overlayed” with him talking about his life experience (without seeing him) would be really powerful. Imagination is a powerful thing :- ) Cheers - Peter…….and best wishes to you and your beautiful bride.

@@BryanBirks absolutely brother and congrats on getting married! Really nice photos and video btw. When I was in grad school I remember a fellow art student mention that my work was more about going places than technique. I used photography in the work, putting it into printmaking and then making multi media type sculptures with all the stuff made in the process. I think the other student was right, the objects I made struggled to exist as art. The better outcome of it all was the travel and experiences with people and places. At least I graduated and got to party my ass off.

I completely agree with you. Going on a trip with certain shot concepts in mind is difficult when you arrive on the scene and the perspectives look very different from the way you'd hope they would. Overcoming your own mental blocks are often the most difficult parts of developing photo work (especially long-term projects like yours), but the resulting shots are also often our most favorite because of those very same struggles that we overcame. In the end, photo trips aren't about the photos. They're about loving on the people of similar passions and enjoying unique experiences alongside them. Good on you Bryan! P.S. I'm supposed to be heading back to STL for about a week in early October. Message me if you'd be willing to meet up and shoot some!

That’s why I always need to go back multiple times to a place. That way I don’t feel overwhelmed with ideas or things that I want to capture. Plus I can feel a bit better about getting closer with the people to potentially get some portraits. Just reach out about October. I’m pretty busy with weddings around then but I might be able to find time!

I grew up in this area - pretty fun to see you guys hanging out in familiar territory. I completely understand the divide between the intent to shoot a ton and the reality of that once you're there. I just returned from a week with old friends on Cedar Mesa in Utah. I didn't shoot nearly as much as I told myself I would. Sometimes it's better to just be present and take in the experience, especially when you're with old friends.

Hi Bryan! In the beginning of the video, where you tried to replecate the photograph of Bryan Schutmaat, there was a lot of snow. How do you meter for snowy scenes so that the picture is well exposed?

Usually meter for the snow and then expose two stops brighter than that. If you meter for the snow and shoot without adjusting, your snow will be grey.
