+FARK HEAD No I don't. But I practice Krav Maga and it's quite simple to do. First you need to know that this is a close distance strike (so are elbow and knee strikes). If the distance is extremely short, you need to open your hand and hit your target with that part between your thumb and your point finger (like Denzel did). Now, if your target is a little further (and you should maybe avoid that strike) then you might want to use the tips of all four fingers (extending your hand and arm toward your opponent's throat). If so, you might need to shorten the distance by moving one foot while the other stays to the ground for weight transfer best balance of your body. Like a normal punch, you should rotate your shoulders and hips so that your whole body gives the strike. Oh yeah, one last way to do it is to literally punch vertically (this is often used for knife defense).

What makes Denzel so good in this scene is his use of body language and non verbal cues. Take for instance, the scratch of his nose and turning his shoulders away @1:45 . That's a sign of showing disrespect to that young man. It's almost like he's telling him; "You're just a punk kid, why don't you get out of my face young buck?" Then @ 2:02, the "sour grapes" look he gives. It's like he's saying: "Man, I didn't want to do it, but you pushed me too far and you forced my hand!" Also, @ 2:27 his eyes are scanning the layout of the land like a predator and then he puts his hands on his hips. He's showing a man whose time is limited. He's desperate and he's on a mission. And, @ 2:34 , when he puts his arm around his nephew, his friendly greeting suddenly becomes a choke hold. He's saying I'm the Alpha male, I'm the one in control. I give the orders around here. You better tell me what I want to know or else! Finally, 3:10 is pretty self explanatory. He's frustrated because he's spinning his wheels and he's not getting anywhere. His attempts to locate his son have proven to be futile. Denzel's a master @ acting by using more than the spoken word! The whole sequence is set up perfectly by Spike Lee and Denzel. Jake Shuttlesworth is a character on the edge. His time is compressed and he has to act fast. He's not only trying to save himself from more prison time, but he's hoping to save his son by reconnecting with him and hopefully guide him away from making the same bad choices that he's made in life! He's been "born again" and he's been given a second chance to do things the right way. Figuratively, Jesus (his son) is his savior. It's the story within the story.

You must be a jerk in your personal life if you think her older brother got what he deserves. I'm against overprotective brothers, but he had the right to be scared for his sister in that one scene. It's like how I would say anyone who likes the show The Sopranos and then say it's because they like the main character I would also call a racist. I think a person can like The Sopranos and not be a racist, as long as they look at it as a character study and only care about what happens next, but if a person only likes the show because they relate to the main character who is a racist, then the person watching the show is a racist. A person liking a fictional character can tell you a lot about a person.
