Actually, in contrast to several contemporary bands you would be able to recognise and sing along to Depeche Mode songs when they played live. Several other act were so bad live, that any resemblance with the record were lost in the tonal deafness and complete lack of musicality outside the controlled studio environment.
@marguskiis7711

MovieViking Yep, but Depeche used pretty much backing tape made in studio. And before Alan Wilder their lives were pretty sloppy actually.

***** Yup, I have to agree with you on that :-) I have bootlegs from before Alan and they are a pain to listen to. One has to applaud Daniel Miller for seeing the potential in spite of the horrible plink-plok out of tune performances.

Vince left in the middle of a tour, so Alan was hired right away to replace him on the stage, initially as a touring member, like Peter Gordeno and Christian Eigner are today, not an actual member of the band. Vince actually left shortly after _Speak & Spell_ was released (following their three singles, including "Just Can't Get Enough"), but had given the others plenty of time--months--to prepare. So Alan was apparently hired before Vince left (but they never appeared together onstage), and was with the band even for the tour supporting their very first album, although he was an employee. I'm not sure exactly when Alan became a fully vested member of the band (i.e. equal to the others), but the first song he worked on with them was "Get the Balance Right" and the first album was their third one, _Construction Time Again_ . That was probably when Alan officially joined Depeche Mode.

@@charlesmccarthy7997 They weren't plating Korgs, though. And in the studio, at the time, they primarily used an ARP 2600. Oh yeah, they did use a Korg KR-55 drum machine that belonged to Daniel Miller (so did the ARP 2600) for some of the drum sounds, but no Korg synths until much later (and even then, I think it was a digital workstation, so they could use some of the samples that came with it). If they used any Korg synths, it was probably the MS-20, but like I said, that was later.
