First off, Depeche Mode is my favorite band of all time. Living in the US, I have watched many Forced to Mode video clips on KZitem and I'm blown away by their performance. I have seen a number of tribute bands but these guys do it the best, in my opinion. Many great points were brought up, including the fact that they don't dress up like the band. Personally, I prefer that they don't. It just seems awkward. What really counts for me is the authenticity and attention to detail in their performance, which these guys have absolutely nailed it. I've been to several Depeche Mode live concerts (unfortunately I wasn't able to catch the Devotional Tour) and much of what they put out post Ultra has been mediocre. The live performances Depeche has performed now consists of half of the new album and the same old songs. On the other hand, Forced to Mode performs songs that DM never has or hasn't performed live in decades and that is what I greatly appreciate. In fact, I would honestly say that if I had a choice of going to a Forced to Mode or Depeche Mode concert, I would choose Forced to Mode any day of the week because of their broad setlist and exceptional quality of their performance. I hope they decide to tour in the US eventually.

I agree with a lot of the comments in support of Forced to mode, they are VERY talented. There are some good tribute bands here in the US, but I would say I agree with you Vaughn, they do bring their own personalities to it and make it their own even if they are doing Depeche Mode's music. It's a good opportunity for fans who perhaps couldn't see DM in concert (due to money or age or whatever) to see a live show. I also do LOVE that they do songs live that DM doesn't ever do or that they don't do any longer. My first tour was Music For The Masses and I was lucky enough to go to both shows [May 5th and 6th 1988]. Great interview my friend!

I had always been so curious what it would have been like to have visited the devotional tour and I always regretted not being able to experience this! But this regret vanished quickly when I saw F2M live for the first time. I could clearly hear the Alan Wilder vibe on their stage, all this attention to detail, this wall of sound, I was thrilled, I couldn’t believe it! Afterwards I took the chance to talk to them and I was pleasantly surprised how down to earth and entertaining they are! I couldn’t resist to ask about their opinion about Alan Wilder and gladly found out that it’s no coincidence they sound the way they do, they re-engineer every sound as accurate as only Alan Wilder would have done and we completely agreed on this topic, Alan was the sound of Depeche Mode and this sound will never come back. If you wonder what Depeche would sound like with Alan Wilder, visit their concert!

@@niallmcdonagh1093 Thank you! It's not just love, it's an obsession! I've spent a lifetime trying to find out what fascinated me so much about their music during this era! Everyone thinks of synths when it comes to Depeche Mode, but in my opinion it's underestimated how they were far ahead of all the other bands with their sampling techniques! The synth sounds were layered to make them unique, they recorded the world to create their dense orchestral sound with these samples, it's insane how many sounds can be found in each track, even though they used machines they made them sound more human by programming variations into their musical sequences to make them sound less rigid, drum patterns were constantly changing... Up to this day I dream of having an E-MU sampler with Alan's samples on it... Crazy, right?!? It's like the holy grail... 😂

Two years ago from now I heard from F2M for the first time by searching YT-Videos and was impressed. Since then I was lucky to see them live twice, one regular and one acoustic gig and must say: Nothing and no one comes closer to the original. And when one closes the eyes, it is even hard to hear a difference to the original. The best part is, F2M do their own thing and stuff I always wanted and wished to hear from Depeche Mode, e.g. playing more unknown songs, like B-sides or also the acoustic versions. To all who never saw them live yet, if you get the chance, take the chance.

What I love about F2M is that they put the sound and voices first and not the looks! You can absolut look like Dave Gahan and Martin Gore... but you'll rarely sing as well as them. But Christian Schottstädt is naturally very, very close to Dave's vocal range. And Thomas does his Martin very, very well! F2M is the best DM cover band of all time! And I'm happy, as an old remixer called "Beyond", to help the trio here and there with sounds. 😎 😀

And it's always great to hear the old stuff, which DM never play now and if they did might not sound as good as FtoM. Great job guys, I'd come and see you play anytime but not right now as I'm having my dinner.

One thing I’d say as someone whose first show was Violator, what you have missed is the rpm of Dave’s turns in the middle of songs like Question of Time. If you have the energy, go for that. one of the best Depeche Mode tribute band ever, their live arrangement's have much better sound than sound what plays on live Depeche Mode nowadays. Vaughn, you tried to say it very politely about Christian Eigner (Austrian by the way :) ) he is too much for Depeche Mode, in other works, he doesn't fit in band. That's so sad for such great live band Depeche Mode was in 25 years ago, of course they don't notice it at all, they don''t even think about it, its all about money for them now.

But a question for these blokes (respectfully)...I'm French so I thought Vaughn would find this fu....wait... never mind back to the question. This particular time in DM history, there was a lot of turmoil in the band (we all know the story). No doubt it was their best content ever (debatable...(cough cough choke choke Exciter)) Just kidding, calm down :D Yes I did double (( ))....good herb. So with the turmoil in the band during that time, and the video on YT that I saw where you basically re-enact the tour performance of Higher Love...at any moment during your performance of Higher Love....did you ever reflect in your head what (at that exact moment when they first performed that set live) what those guys must have been feeling? I say this because during that specific time in their performances, they (Fletch, Alan, Martin,) looked like Kraftwerk.....up there like robots. While Dave was all over the place. So do those thoughts and wonders ever come into your head? As a tribute band, I would think not only yes, but also followed in the steps of....curious minds want to know.....and just a quick add....your acoustic performance of "The Bottom Line" was mind bending.

Vaughn, your efforts are appreciated, but I'd like to share my thoughts on this running theme of slamming present day DM. I get fatigued with this whole echo chamber effect of loving 80s & 90s DM while slamming DM of the last 2 decades (don't even get me started on some of these fans and their myopic opinions--unfortunately, this seems to extend to Forced to Mode as well). This is particularly exacerbated by how you (and the followers) are hypercritical of DM yet seem to handle other bands with kid gloves. I still watch your videos because I do like your personality and passion and am curious to see your album evaluations (I'll probably disagree a lot with your assessments of the recent albums!), but you may be alienating people that appreciate the Mode holistically (my wife, for one, got fed up and sees no value in watching something that's going to piss her off!). I know to some extent you're being humorous and certainly the followers really eat that up but how about the value of a balanced view? Everyone's entitled to their opinion but how about an appreciation for the band's longevity and commitment to marching to their own drum and overcoming great odds (the Universe tour, for example, was beset by problems--personal and physical--yet DM still powered through! It also boggles my mind how DM still have the energy of a young band!)? I don't see a lot of that. What I do see is a whole lot of "I want this! I want that! I don't like this! Why are they doing that?" "DM is lacking without Alan!" "This doesn't sound like the album version or the version they did in 1984 or 1993!" "I don't like the live drums!" "I prefer they play smaller venues than huge arenas and stadiums!" (ummm, yeah, like that's really going to happen! Also, DM fought tooth and nail to be in the position they are in; THEY SHOULD PLAY IN THE MOST EPIC VENUES!). If only you guys could hear yourselves! Heh! Heh! I also find it odd that you all revere the 93-94 period to the extent that you wish DM would just be frozen in that time when that was like the WORST era for the band on a personal level, but hey, who cares about their own well-being, right? Suffer for your art! Serve ME ME ME! For the record, I went to 6 of the Spirit tour shows, and they all kicked ASS! Mass amounts of people did not on a beer run during latter day songs and the people I was with noted how powerful the drumming was! I've been a fan since 85, and they've never disappointed me, but then again, I like to see things through a positive, appreciative prism rather than dwelling on what I "think" an artist should be doing. Again, I'm not saying you have to love latter day Mode as much as vintage, imperial-era Mode. But one can temper one's view and just be reasonable, man!

My god. What a well articulated comment. Thank you! Yes, that is my point of view too. DM evolved with time and it says a lot when a band can pull of their most successful tour 37 and 38 years after they were founded. I agree with every point you said about their current live sound. The early tours all look great on the availible recordings, but in my opinion, DM have not aged a bit. I'm a very young fan and I only attended the Delta Machine and the Global Spirit tour (multiple times each) in person, but they still sound massive. Thank you for your comment.

Simon Wagner Thank you so much for the kind, supportive words, my friend! I’m so glad you noted that you’re a younger fan because one of Vaughn’s points seems to be that even younger fans he’s spoken with agree with the notion of DM losing a step which you’ve dispelled! I’m pretty protective of DM and while we can’t agree on everything, I find this ownership attitude and presumptiveness (DM are just doing it for the money-puhleez!) that some here have a bit arrogant.
