For me personally this is a very very difficult topic to discuss, especially in person. Growing up I’ve always felt isolated and sad, never knew why until a few years ago when I started to do a little research and discovered that my symptoms match those of anxiety/depression. I’ve never really opened up about this to anyone, not even on here, it’s just too awkward. At a very young age I do recall feeling sad and I recall constant fear of something bad happening to someone in my life. I’ve always had the tendency to isolate myself from others and and try avoid large groups of people. I usually don’t feel comfortable interacting with complete strangers because it just feels awkward. I’ve always had these crazy ups and downs where one minute I feel fine, I crack a joke and get a good laugh in with coworkers or family members and an hour later I feel like a totally different person on the inside. It’s very heavy weight to carry on a daily basis but you just put on a smile and pretend like nothings wrong, you fake your way through it and that’s really how I’ve dealt with it all my life, by smiling and faking. I makes you feel a bit ashamed to open up, lost my father to cancer two months ago and that has been especially tough watching him decline, on top of everything else, but I’ve been faking my way through it, too ashamed to cry about it. I know I need to open up to someone, maybe my family or church pastor, don’t know when or where to start.

Wow this is powerful... I'm dealing with depression/ loneliness. Most Black men are very competitive and strong minded....not all but we come with a very complex survival gene. Mix that with our history of slavery ....Jim Crow to discrimination in all areas of our lives. Black men have a special mental complexity that we deal with on a daily bases. We find it hard to tell others how we feel. We think it's a weakness if we show "Feelings". We consume to much of everything ...trying to escape the "feelings". We need each other. We need a place where we can talk our way through our pain and come out the other side without hurting ourselves or someone else. Our young men are out there alone and somehow we have to bring them some type of hope. This maybe, is the space to do that. I'l bookmark this page and post again. I hope my post will continue the conversation. Please if it helped someone ...pass it on. We need each other ..we can't stand alone.

The problem is not that we don't seek help. I have tried MANY times to seek help and none of the therapists or so-called mental health professionals gave a damn. One even said I was faking, so I gave up! Another thing is we don't "paint ourselves" into social isolation, in most cases we are PUSHED there, no matter how sociable we try to be or how much we go out of our way to be productive and upstanding citizens and participants in society. This discussion needs better context and better data.

This discussion of depression is designed to bring light to the importance of identifying depression and avoiding social isolation within our the American societal landscape. He also briefly discusses the antidote: the power of prayer, talk therapy (CBT) with the Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LMSW, or LPC, and the idea that good old fashion social supports within the community can promote a more meaningful lifestyle. This speaker offers valuable insights from his educational and life experiences, which are uncommon to find free of cost.

Many of us don’t use medical/mental health resources because when we do there is immediate doubt on anything we say. We are said to overstate medical conditions as a community (there is a racial biased component to that of course) so much like victims of sexual violence (similar for this comparison) when presented with immediate doubt there is rarely a second chance at getting that patient (or victim) to open up.

i feel you brother. i say to all this if you feel like u need assistance. do what ver you have to and deal with what ever you need to to get the help you need. do not allow the many ways that are designed to either thwart you or make you quick. if you black you better wake up to the FACT that we are Bulldogs by nature and we we walk that we they have to kill us to stop us. THIS IS NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH INEQUITY IS AT HAND BROTHER. THIS IS ABOUT ONE SIMPLE MISSION THAT IS OFTEN DIFFICULT TO COMPLETE. WHICH IS TO GET IT DONE BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE VA and all sorts of fuckery that through at us/me. Yet, my mental health issues are being dealt with in a practical and reasonable way. medically not so much. and i'm making them accountable by directing and being in charge of my own care and making sure that whatever they come up with is proper and normal based on medical president . many times medical fuckery occurs when the patient is not intelligent or lucid enough to realize they are being under treated or not treated appropriately . which is me saying you can no longer trust your medical professionals to really be our champions anymore. many just don;t give a fuck, others just pretend to give a fuck.

You wrong theres tons of white not having job, being paids mimimum wage, working crazy hours, not having a GF, and therefore going thru depressions., But its is right that black on average suffer more since day one, just the fact that most of them dont grow up in a full familly with one dad and one mom to raise them... they usually have parents that are less educated, more violent, less care giving and loving... Not being love and being able de speak about your feeling to your parents is in reality, painful. What people who have being thru that have to do, is to make sure to not reproducing it... which mean, loving your kids in a healty manner, raised them correctly not being to hard but not accepting everything, the key is in the balance, you need to praise kids when they do good thing and blame them when they do thing you considerer as bad... Black and africans in general, including arabs from middle east have a "their" SYSTEM of rules to make individuals... and feelings, being open minded, and evrythings else is different than the ones of "white" western or Japanase/Chinese... Each system has his pros and cons... For instance white tends to not beat their kids when they do wrong they tends to take their kids and explain them how they shuold and shouldnt bahave, because they think that kids are enough intelligent since 1yo to understand when you teach them. And they are right, kids are smarts. What every black American kids didnt chose this system of values but its cultural.. you have to change it if you think that it aint the good way to raise kids and individual. Last thing, its not because of white supremacy if Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, succed more than black, its just that korean/chinese/japanese/indian familly and household come with diffent set of values and cultures that actually make them raise. That teach them, respect, empathie, the importance of school, hardwork, to reject violence and things like that... thats why they succed more... its not because white supremacists love indians or chinese..

To my fellow Black Man, please talk to a licensed professional or a trusted friend or relative if you're feeling depressed. It helps. I found a really good Black therapist who has helped me with my struggles. Therapy will feel awkward at first and healing is never easy, but it does work if you do the work. Don't suffer in silence. You are worth it!

Once we step away from society standards, we'll be better off. We have to go within and goes with what works best for us as individuals. Also, there is a lot of trauma that's keeping us a part as a group. As a black woman, I can support and love my man, but he may not have the strength to open up and be vulnerable enough to take that help. No matter what that help looks like.

The only thing that keeps me going in life is my 45k salary secure job. Without that, I will end my life too. Real talk!

Thinking too much of oneself causes depression. When you know you are insignificant and negligible, you can relax and be yourself. Your existence doesn't really make much difference in the grand scheme of things. You live to experience life.

It’s not that simple. Maybe it is but there is much more to depression. For example social media can make you feel insignificant but if you feel like others aren’t and you feel you shouldn’t be insignificant that can cause depression.

As a mother who son is suffering from depression I want him to go get therapy but he won’t. He is in a bad cycle. He keeps using women as an escape to not deal. I tell him I love him. I support him. Depression can manifest in different ways, and symptoms can vary from person to person. However, some common signs and symptoms of depression include: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable Fatigue or lack of energy Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions Changes in appetite or weight Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or oversleeping Irritability or restlessness Feelings of worthlessness or guilt Thoughts of death or suicide If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to talk to a healthcare provider or mental health professional. They can help you determine if you are experiencing depression and provide appropriate treatment options. Depression is a treatable condition, and seeking help is an important step towards recovery.

For years, I have noticed in the Black community, as a whole, are deteriorating, very rapidly. The speed is occurring at an astronomical rate, due to the highly use of social-media platforms, mainstream Rap-culture, drugs, peer pressure, etc. In all honesty, hurts for me to say, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better for Black people, in the Youth. The older Black Americans still hold onto great family values and conservative mannerisms. But the younger generation; it isn't getting any better. Don't believe me? Just go into the urban communities, in our major cities to see for yourselves, go on their social-media accounts, go into their schools, go and watch these reality TV shows. You can see mainstream media has a smite-grip on their attention-spans, which is keeping them docile and unconsciously paralyzed in a narcissistic way. It has made Black men and women very unhappy and you can see that this isn't a mistake, but is very premeditated by the media, especially by the utilization of Rap music and Social-media. Now, this isn't some rant against the media or anything external. What's being written here is based on an epiphany for you to see that you've let this happen. Whatever sadness, manic depression, neurosis behavior you have; you are the one that let it happened. It's you and what you need to do is really look inside of yourself, in your mind and ask yourself "If these thoughts aren't helping me to elevate. Then why do I need them?" and eliminate a lot of the thoughts that are not helping you, at all, and create new thoughts that can help you grow as a person. So whenever you smile, it isn't a fake smile, but a real one! Do it, only so that you do not have to live the life that was designed for you. But to live the life you've always wanted to live. . . Control the Mind. Don't let the Mind control you. 😌 🙏💕

Look to God and live by His Word. The world will fall anybody. The world will give a person it's measurements of success not God's rules for success. When we don't meet those wordly standards, we feel like a failure. I decided that I can not gain acceptance from the world. I no longer measure my looks, education, talents, etc by the world. God knows I am special and that is enough. There are a lot of rich unhappy people in the world. They are miserable. Know why, because a lot of them don't have God in their lives. True happiness comes from God. Accept Jesus as your personal Saviour. Feed yourself the Word daily. Always lift Jesus up and speak about His goodness. Negativity won't stick around for Jesus, guarantee you that. Fellowship with strong believers in the faith. I'm mean the sold out believers, not the one foot in the world and one foot in the church ones. Listen to worship songs that declares the goodness of the Lord. God loves the black man. But alit of the black men need to love Him back. Be blessed 😁
