Depth conversion is the process of moving seismic interpretations from time to depth domain
Velocity functions relate the velocity of sound in rocks to depth of burial and provide a more accurate picture than simple constant velocities
Velocity Functions relate velocities to depth of burial
Use well data (sonic logs and check-shots are important)
Can be single or multi layer - dependent of geological complexity
Works in both clastic and carbonate settings
Two components
Component relating to depth of burial (e.g. K gradient)
Residual which varies laterally - which must be mapped separately (e.g. V0)
Relatively quick and easy to use - formulae built into most mapping software packages (Petrel, Equipoise, DUG, Kingdom)
Can be a part of a stochastic depth conversion workflow
But we still need to extrapolate outside well control
