The cartoon has subtle anti-Nazi symbols. Artist Hans Fischerkoessen was put in prison after the war but then exonerated because his cartoons were realized to be anti-Nazi. Despite being produced by one of the world's most evil regimes, its poignant because the Snowman wants to escape to summer and hides in a refrigerator until July. He dances in the flowers and though happy, he melts but sings that at least he lived to experience good times. Considering the times it was made its very moving.

Thank you so much for sharing this classic. For some reason, this became a Christmastime staple on television in Western North Carolina for many years. It doesn't get shown anymore, but everyone seems to remember it vividly. Great stuff.

In 1945, Russian troops arrested Fischerkoesen as a possible Nazi collaborator. He was kept in prison three years and was eventually able to prove he was not a Nazi sympathizer. Three years after that he and his family escaped to West Germany with an animation camera. He later established a studio near the city of Bonn.

We watched this cartoon on Mr. Bill's Cartoons, years ago, and it was our favorite. However, in the cartoon we watched, there was a different dubbing than this one. The snowman melted and said, "Goodblye everyblody, goodblye". I wonder how to the copy witht that particular dub over. Great cartoon, and brings back sweet memories of years gone by. :)

I LOVE this cartoon! So many fond memories of it. The end used to make me tear up when I was really young. We had the English version on VHS with a second cartoon which came on after. I think it was about a tin soldier? Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I'd love to see that one again too.

This is not a propagandistic film. The Third Reich, despite what one can think of it, was truly passionate about art. They were disgusted about "abstract/avant-garde art" since they had a very strict way to see art. The results? One of the most ambitious architectonical projects of the XXth century. And what could be said on sculpture? Arno Berker rivalizes with Michelangelo even. The Führer loved Disney films. He was really charmed with "Snow White", to the point he even drew (and pretty well; if you saw them without context, you could even think they are actually from the original animators) the dwarfs and Pinocchio. Thus, in his ambition, he wanted to create an animation industry, since they saw animation as the art form it truly is (before the stigmatization it still has, to nowadays, being "just for children" according to many people), so he founded and gave his support (a lot of financial support) to new/young animators. In this film, at the house scene, we can appreciate one of the first examples (if not the actual first) of 3-D animation, in the 1940's! Even if this short film is nothing very astonishing, it still has charm and beauty, something even Disney has lost in the current times. Nevertheless, this was merely the beginning of what could have even dethroned Disney as the greatest company of animation, since the Führer dreamed of being rivals with it. With such vision on animation and art, being one a true form of the other, and with his great ambition, I believe we could have seen masterpieces, and some of the most beautiful and precious examples of animation in the whole world; if only...

Could be about Leon Trotsky. First he runs around the town stirring up trouble and causing mischief (Russian Revolution) Goes into an icebox at a house out in the middle of nowhere (His many exiles and jail time) Goes to Mexico and spends the rest of his life writing (six months before his assassination he writes about how beautiful the grass, sky and sun are and the world is beautiful.) The rabbit eating the carrot is the next philosopher grabbing hold Trotsky's knowledge and ideas.

I can't find it anywhere, the other two shorts have something to do with the nativity and toys coming to life, specifically a toy soldier falling in love with one of the girl toys...and there was a raggedy ann type doll too. Anyone know the names if these shorts? Please and Thank you.

You just copy the posted adresse - watch?v=VQ2kYLoyy_U&feature=related - and replace/paste the one for the current youtube video link - watch?v=VQ2kYLoyy_U&feature=related - in your browser adresse (everything before "watch" you have to keep) and it should work. It only works like that because KZitem deletes all comments with a full link adresse, so you have to copy/paste the last part of the adresse.

(continuation of comment) There is no ideology in the movie itself, it could work simply as a german movie, it's a great piece of animation despite the intended goals. Also, it is thought that the writer and the director weren't much supportive of nazi ideas, another animated film (Verwitterte Melodie) can be viewed as a criticism of it.

I recorded it from WLOS TV 13 here in Asheville NC in November 2004, also, I made copies on both videotape and dvd. I don't have it posted on youtube, but I can send you a copy of it on videotape or dvd or both. Just let me know how I can get in touch with you about this.

Not all films in the Third Reich did contain (overt or hidden) propaganda. But also the 'unpolitical' entertainment had an important system stabilizing function: to make the audience forget about the troubles fo the war (airraids, relatives at the front etc) and the terror of the Nazi-regime (neighbours that disappeared to concentration camps or 'the east' etc)

The ending smacks of Nazi death kitsch.And I've seen some of Fischerkoesen's other cartoon on KZitem-I'm sure He was a nice man, but the cartoons aren't as anti-Nazi as some people think."Silly Goose" in particular is obvious Nazi propaganda.(Goose gets in trouble because she won't march in line and loves fashion and urbanity-Yiddish style tune is heard when she meets Fox.)

You dont realize the Nazi ideology in this, dont you? The context is: You must fullfill the role nature has assinged to you, or else you will perish. Besides, he sings "Thats the summer of my life...", well summer 1943 wasnt that bright of a time. So this is probably intended to stabalize the morality of the population. How ever i also like the movie. Its great how the house around 4min spins. Great animation.
@benm7274

@@asnierkishcowboy It's very controversial, because Snowman looks up for better times (cold, freezy, nasty -> warm, blooming, happy) and seems to be more happy then ever before, when he is melting down. This can be also seen as very destabilizing, especially after the defeat of Stalingrad (Winter 42/43).
