+Francisco Torrealba Considering that the teacher has been with him since he was 4, the teacher grew in his overall understanding of how Paravicini handles the world so I'm not too overly surprised this was the end result.

+OldeFreedom Oh it's not about time man, I've personally seen some parents live with autistic children all their life and still don't grasp how they see the world, either express themselves towards them, acknowledging them like this guy does. But indeed as you said, his teacher is an awesome person that managed to understand what many people can't. P. S. Not a native English speaker, I'm sorry if there's some grammar hiccups or something lol. Peace. 🖖🏼

How marvelous and inspiring. Reminds me that as a child my father was a janitor for a local school with several pianos. Every few months a piano tuner came to tune the pianos and they were invariably blind, some with sticks some with dogs. I remember how sad I felt for them that this was the only work they could get. I now wonder how many could have excelled like Derek if the support he had was available to them. We seriously don't do enough now to support and encourage people with disability

i dont remember if it was on "Super Humans" or another show on the discovery channel, but Derek was on there. his ability to play the piano is far surpassed by his vast library of music that he keeps in his head, even some of the lesser known or rarer pieces of music he can play back at any given moment any chord or style. this TedTalks is just the tip of the iceberg of what this man is capable of musically.

Strange thing about emotions. Once Adam tested Derrick on emotional spectrum of playing and it seems he can only comprehend happy and sad playing like major and minor. When he was asked to play angry he hit the notes really hard and started growling but beyond that he didn't know what to do. I feel Derrick's music often leaves me to be open to interpretation to how I can perceive it. Nevertheless it's beautiful.

I was feeling similarly at first but consider the following: 1. It takes a lot of resources to keep someone like Derek alive and in his unique case, emotionally fulfilled doing something that he enjoys. Derek's gift combined with Adam's help is the only reason why he is so happy and not suffering in a group home or depending on the income of family. 2. Adam always addresses Derek directly with compliments and anecdotes. It's a unique relationship but there is more respect than exploitation.

I ask myself ....How is this possible?....then realize that the answer is simple.....Just sit down, watch & listen, and be thankful I can do that. There is no answer necessary, the experience is enough. I thought about this as I try to learn piano, and punch out a couple of thuddy sounding lines of noise.....He's just simply remarkable :)

You obviously have no understanding of Derek. Even though he may contribute to the talk, he only gets his confidence from his ability to play. He wouldn't be able to give an explanation or back story to his amazing skills. Adam is merely there to answer all the questions. The interactions you see between the 2 of them is the best and most productive way for Derek and that is evident as he still enjoy playing the piano.

It is wonderful listening to genius every now and then. What we see here is an interpretation of what we are hearing which cannot be seen in his mind. This may have been a curated experience of Derek, but I think the audience would have also appreciated hearing Derek's unrelenting full fledged inner mind sound symphony uncontrolled and just play his mind for a moment rather than just simply music. We wanted to hear Derek's interpretation of music. How would he redefine it?

Even so this guy is providing a mutually beneficial service of assisting and being a partner and friend to this guy who disabled and dependent. Both Derek is obvious content to say the least or happy doing what he does, Adam of course gets a benefit out of it but so does the world by seeing somebody who is a great artist. One may think in order to avoid "exploitation" they have to be under house arrest and hidden from society like some beast but what good or respect is that to him or the world.

I most heartily agree with poster, 'USERNAME...', in that--all too often, however inexcusable, that which is ethereal, and unique (because it is not understood), is denigrated so that it is made to appear comic, freakish, and so to be easily dismissed, or--on the other hand, though equally loathsome, is to deify it, both so as to not engender fear, or perceived threat. Although I, 'ouch', at the term, "Yankee Doodle Dandy", I willingly concede that the media in my Country does pander to the low.
