In the Junior A final. Everyone knew Bobby Orr. Derek’s dad said two players will be remembered for this game, Orr and the guy who fights him.Derek started the fight and they were great friends and teammates. In the mid to late 70s with new hockey with more money than brains, Derek became the highest paid athlete in the world playing for a new Philadelphia franchise. It went bankrupt so Derek came back to the NHL.

@NamIsIll Derek Sanderson has been clean and sober for many years, is a stockbroker now, and a mentor to young athletes ... so they don't go down the same hellish path in life that he found himself on.

He's very lucky to have.a special friend like Orr because most addicts burn all their bridges to family and friends till they have no one but a park bench. Very sad and destructive for all involved

I will tell you what, Derek was a great all - around player. He could score 25-30 goals a year; he was a good play-maker; one of the NHLs best face off men; good penalty killer; played the power play effectively; strong skater; and did not take a back seat with rough stuff. I read a writer say his persona was so much bigger than what he brought to the ice. I agree the persona was huge, but he was one really good hockey player. For the exception of Orr, I would have started a team with him; even over Espo.

Derek should have been in the statue similar to Doug Pederson with Nick Foles for Super Bowl 52 vs The Pats. Derek threaded Orr a perfect pass.

It's another case of Sanderson stealing Orr's thunder: the statue unveiling is for Bobby but the press huddles around Derek. Esposito noticed this first saying "hey I'M THE GUY WHO SCORED FOUR GOALS! but the press always interviews HIM"...

Sanderson was one of the Best players in the nhl.first string center on 80%of the teams in the league. and all that as a vicious alcohol and drug problem ravaged him.rookie of the year.should have rivaled Bobby Clarke's carreer very similar players I saw them both and would say Derek was probably the better player, and that says alot.i CUS Clarke was a he'll of a hockey player

wow Sanderson looks about 1,000 years old in this video. I wonder if he was drunk when he made all those blind homer calls during his time as the bruins color man .
