Gregg - I too saw GG in Dec 75 or 76 in the U.K. it was the Free Hand tour. I was 16 at the time. This evening changed my life and within 2 weeks had persuade my parents to buy me a bass guitar. To this day I study Ray Shulman’s (RIP) bass lines - and still get them wrong! Fantastic insight into the band’s music and dynamics - you’re doing a great job .

Spirit are great, so glad that Derek name dropped them. You can't go wrong with their first four album and they really laid the groundwork for prog, metal and the folky intersections that followed.

For me, they were unparalleled. They were phenomenal. The most multi-faceted, creative rock music of the time. Of any time. Along with Frank Zappa( who is mentioned in the interview) and Captain Beefheart they were among the vanguard of creative, experimental music.

What a great interview…what really blew my mind is when he talked about how his dad was a jazz musician and would bring back musicians to the house and play all night….my dad did the same exact thing…my dad was a NYC Jazz pianist and trumpet player….I turned him on to GG once and he loved them.

I wonder if Derek would recall playing the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead, Long Island on the Civilian tour the night the NY Islanders won their first Stanley Cup. He performed "Number One" as the encore wearing an Islanders jersey.

I bought “The power and the Glory” and it blew my mind. I own all of the studio albums on vinyl. I even have a copy of “in a glass house” that has the cover overlay reversed. The. Recordings are not bootlegs etc… but original releases.

What was the Spirit track Derek mentioned? It might've been Taurus. Great interview Gregg, so many stories too, and it's funny hearing him refer to Elton as Reg, that's old buddies for you. I guess you get to ask him about Civilisation in part 2.

It's a sign of the music industry that bands like GG didn't get proper commercial support. Human and musical qualities of these artists count for nothing in this all-profit plague. The best example is the Hall of Shame. Things are BIG that should be small and many of them clap unrhythmically... . ..
