Stunning capture of an incredible band. Eric and Bobby's harmonies and their "Sam and Dave" callback thing were awesome. Bobby Whitlock is one of the most underrated vocalists and B3 players of the era. And Eric's playing is... well, Eric at his most freest.

While this is not Cream, Clapton is spewing forth his same musical unconscious at length with that singular urgency which is so wonderful.

Eric Clapton at his brilliant best. Derek and the Dominos swing and rock. They're one unit rolling along, with the guitar 🎸 lighting the place up. (!) It's the most slide he ever played and it sounds so good 👍. 1970 was a very good year for music. Incredible. Creativity everywhere. Thank you Eric- Derek. 🕉

Fantastic. Too bad I was away in college that October. The Electric Factory was small - saw five or six shows there, unfortunately not Tommy ‐ unless they switched locations that fall. Hendrix had just died in September. Clapton was on fire. Thanks.

I was there and the Factory was so small the band went onstage though the audience. As they were coming through and At that moment I turned and looked Eric Clapton straight in the eye. I didn't realize who he was until he got onstage.

@@victorkowalenko5914 Great story. I went maybe three or four times. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have gone every chance I got. But I was in high-school. I'm grateful for what I saw.

Absolutely love this album! Does anyone know what he says after “Gotta good thing won’t see me standing around crying no more” on rambling on my mind?
@ColinStachowski

Hi Jason, he sings 'When you gotta good friend, that will stay right by your side'. He mixes two Robert Johnson's songs: 'Rambling on My Mind' and 'When You Got a Good Friend'. The line you're asking for is: 'Give her all your spare time, love and treat her right'. Cheers!

EC at his absolute peak; chorus after chorus of sustained invention. After this tour and his three year drug-induced hiatus, the spark went out of his playing and it only sporadically touched these heights thereafter. The whole band is incredibly tight!

Agree but his playing great guitar came back in the late 80 to mid nineties with amazing and emotional blues playing. Especially when he was playing his tribute to one of his favorite mentors: Freddie King!! Who I think is so underrated and often overlooked!

@@thomasbedell4770 Thanks, the Fillmore East recordings are the best! Having been raised in Philly, I was interested to hear what the band sounded like and what was played at the Electric Factory shows. I was 13 at the time. Separately, the D&D Fillmore East recordings were made on 10/23 & 10/24, one week after these Electric Factory shows (10/16 and 10/17) and four weeks after Hendrix passed (9/18/70).

It boggles my mind about the style and caliber of his playing post D&D. Like you said, it sounds like a completely different dude. Sure, the blues stuff he did later was pretty good, but nothing that even comes close to his Dominoes work. Gone were the very extended melodic runs in his solos where he sounded like he would never run out of new ideas. His tone went in the sh@tter too. He started using those Fender Lace Sensor pickups and everything sounded thin and nasally. Clearly, the 3 year heroin sabbatical was not a positive. I often wonder what would have happened if EC had gravitated more towards Dickey Betts instead of Duane Allman. Duane was a good slide and regular guitar player, but clearly he was more of a studio musician. He was more comfortable playing covers and stuff other people wrote. Virtually 100% of the Allman Brothers big hits were written by Dickey. Dickey’s father played in a Texas Swing band (ala Bob Wills) and you can clearly hear the influence of that style in Dickey’s playing. Probably would have been a better fit for Carl Radle and Bobby Whitlock in that sense too.

I’ve been listening to Slowhand since the late sixties. John Mayall’s “Beano” record blew me away. I drove my parents nuts learning the solos on Hideaway and all that good stuff. Me and my younger brother (he was a good harp player) went to all the open mic nights we could get away with at some of the blues clubs here in Chicago. Not many left now. I think the first Clapton show I could afford to go to was at the old Chicago Stadium with Muddy Waters as the warm-up and Willie Dixon and JohnnyWinter sat in for the encores. I saw him every time he came to town. Twice in one night when he played the United Center, then showed up late night o jam with Buddy Guy who was playing at Excalibur. Last show I saw was at Alpine Valley with Stevie Ray, Robert Cray, etc. So…when I say I don’t believe his playing was as good as when he was with D&D, that is not the equivalent of saying he sucked. I bought the records, CDs, posters, DVDs and a fortune in scalped tickets. I like his music. I still don’t think anything he played after D&D was in the same zip code-and he knew it. Listen to Bobby Whitlock’s podcast. When they started working on the follow up to the Layla record, he freaked out and said to Bobby, “What the f@ck am I supposed to do now? How the hell am I going to top that?” Anywho, he’s a great player. In my opinion he used to be better and I can’t stand the thin tone on his later stuff. But that’s just my opinion. If people love the later stuff, that’s cool too. Just remember to keep on keepin’ on!
