Yeah, it's all overstated. I've driven this highway at least 30 times. Many of these trips were in two wheel drive Honda Civics etc. It's not nearly as bad as TV etc. make it out to be. The trick? winter tires and DRIVE FOR THE CONDITIONS. It's really that simple. The thing that makes this highway dangerous is other drivers.

on that highway, there should be snow sheds that cover the entire roadway on portions that have steep grades. Ventilation would be done using long louvers on the sides that would allow air to go in and out, but would keep out the snow so the road is kept 100% dry at all times of the year.

In that video I was probably in 3 or 4? Honestly can't remember. Loaded would really depend on how heavy you are and your tractor. Learn your equipment. Start off going slow, learn how much the engine brake will hold you back, and as you learn the limit of your truck you'll know exactly what you can do with it on every hill. Compared to when I first started going up to Kamloops from Langley I've easily shaved 2 hours off my loaded portion Northbound. Don't be scared to take it slow in the beginning.

Different trailers with different weights. Loaded trucks with a single trailer will have plenty of weight at least on the drive axles of the tractor as well as the trailer wheels helping with traction. Loaded B-trains do better for traction but need to go slower because of heavier overall weight. Empty with one trailer is bad, but Worst is empty with 2 trailers, very little weight on the tractor drive axles and trailer axles, in extremely icy conditions like this, even a light brake application will result in wheels locking up and sliding like you saw the loaded B-train do in to the snow on the shoulder. Can't use engine brake either because your tractor drive wheels will "Jake Lock" and you'll jackknife. Unfortunately only option is start slow at the top of the hill and go slow all the way down, slow enough that you don't need to touch the brakes or use engine brakes at all when you don't have enough traction to.

I was overheight in my rig on 70 so I had to take the non-tunnel bypass (rt 6 , I think). The speed limit was 15mph on many of the hairpins. It was the first time in 30 years I voluntarily drove BELOW the speed limit. Just recalling it gets my heart going faster.

I love watching the Highway Thru Hell comfortably seated on my sofa with the warmth of the fireplace. In France outside the mountains, snow is rare. Nice driving, be careful

That's the show I was thinking about, with Jamie and Gord. Great show, hardest working tow drivers.

I had the pleasure of driving the Coq with roughly 90k pounds GVW last May and it was beautiful. Gorgeous summer weather, dry roads, beautiful scenery, beautiful people. I think I'll leave that as my one and only memory of BC driving, because it looks terrifying in the winter.

@Michael Heathman Season 3 Al tells Jamie, "It's the chrome James! Who pays for that? Your cable's rusty! The chrome, James, the chrome!" One of the best scenes in the series.
