One of the first 3 fps games I ever played. I think the first 2 I played were Doom 2 first level and Heretic. When my dad bought a 200mhz pentium overdrive pc in 1996, I played the demo disk Descent Destination Saturn. I never had the full version until later in life, but as a kid I did have Descent 2, which is still often my favorite mid 1990s shooter of all time.

Ultra smooth moves, awesome playthrough ❤told a colleague of my first brush with x86 gaming, needed a video showing the fully 3D roaming playstyle, found a nice looking one with original gfx/sound (and HUD/cockpit off/fully zoomed, like I used to play it back then) but with a "novice"(?) player and your video was the "expert" link I shared 😉. Perfect 👌 Also admiring the level designs in your automap using the same (ship) controls in an intuitive way was pretty awesome as well! Thank you for this video and your time and effort put into this! 😎Much appreciated!

Watching someone go back and play this amazing game makes you realize just how far ahead of it's time this game actually was. As far as I'm aware, it was the only game at the time that not only allowed you to, but required you to move and think in three dimensions. I know that now you could compare it to something like, say, No Man's Sky, until you realize that it took roughly two DECADES for a game even remotely close to this to be made.

Playing descent on Kali online was the best thing I remember during the 1990's. I still remember the battles in the Minerva level. Good times.

Yeah, the drillers are nasty. Not surprising they have such a loud and distinct "activation" sound to warn you. I think one weak spot of the drillers is that they can be destroyed with a single homing missile. It's pretty effective against them, at least when you know where they are. A lot of saving and reloading should do the trick.

Descent didn't have good 3d ports. The 3dfx original was the best, and there were some features missing, but improved graphics. Descent 2 however was a joke because it didn't properly shade the enemies, so they were full bright, and looked better in software. Never tried the virge version, but I think it was both broken and slow. Today we have like two ports, with only one being viable with dated graphics, and the other one improved graphics but broke the game and isn't developed anymore. As for carmageddon, it was ok, but the Android port ended up being the best version.

Pretty sure this came with my in box ps, only game I had for a several months. So fun, I loved the angles you could find twisting around upside down and sideways, and still keep ripping through it. My friends hated it, I loved it cuz it was so much better when you got better, and played the harder settings
