A cotter joint, also known as a socket and spigot joint, is a method of temporarily joining two coaxial rods. One rod is fitted with a spigot, which fits inside a socket on one end of the other rod. Slots in the socket and the spigot align so that a cotter can be inserted to lock the two rods together
What are the parts of Cotter joint?
Cotter Joint has mainly three components - spigot, socket and cotter as shown in Figure 9.1. Spigot is formed on one of the rods and socket is formed on the other. The socket and the spigot are provided with a narrow rectangular slot. The cotter is tightly fitted in this slot.
How do you make a cotter joint?
BASIC PROCEDURE FOR COTTER JOINTS DESIGN:
Calculate the diameter of the each rod by :
Calculate the diameter d2 of the spigot on the basis of tensile stress.
Calculate the outside diameter d1 of the socket on the basis of tensile stress in the socket from the equation :
What is the shearing area of the Cotter?
Since the cotter is in double shear, therefore shearing area of the cotter = 2 b t and shear strength of the cotter = 2 b t τ Equating this to load (P), we have P = 2 b t τ From this equation, width of cotter (b) may be determined.
Where is Cotter joint used?
Cotter joint
This is mainly used to connect rigidly two rods which transmit motion in the axial direction, without rotation. These joints may be subjected to tensile or compressive forces along the axes of the rods
What does a cotter joint transmit?
A cotter is a flat wedge-shaped piece of steel as shown in figure-4.2. 1.1. This is used to connect rigidly two rods which transmit motion in the axial direction, without rotation. These joints may be subjected to tensile or compressive forces along the axes of the rods.
