Hi!😀Thank you for making this video! I just picked up an Akebia Quinata today and just found your vid! I’m excited to plant it and care for it! In understand it’s invasive, so I plan to keep it in an area in where it won’t spread .

Thank you so much!!. I used to grow fuzzy kiwi and found they don’t do nearly as well here as Hardy kiwi. One green world nursery carries several varieties. I personally find Dumbarton Oaks is my favorite.

@@ParkrosePermaculture Awesome thanks!! I was wondering where to by some Dave Wilson trees and that nusery came up the other day. Fast growing trees are killing me with the cost, but I have been buying my fruit trees anywhere. Do you think its ok the plant crimson clover next to my fruit trees as a nitrogen fixer? I like your house is on a quarter acer lot but I'm getting as many fruit trees as possible.. Well I'm so glad to talk to someone local. I appreciate your advice! Thanks Angie

I have this covering a chain link fence in deep dry shade for privacy. I'm in Vancouver, WA very close to you. It's been present at least 10 but probably closer to 15 years. Even in those conditions, it climbs into the neighboring forested property with vigor, so I have to faithfully prune it at least twice a year to keep it contained to my property.

I just planted this on an Eastern facing wall of a garage in Portland, OR. Hope it does well, since it's in almost full shade.

I am in Tacoma WA right now and moving to port orchard. (Moving out of In-laws house) I have planted there two nice Akebia Quinata from a nursery, planted a few from seed, and cuttings from someone I met on Tacoma Gardeners website. I have been interested in trifoliata and other info about akebia in the PNW. I also created all the wikipedia pages for every akebia species (I have a problem lol) Is there any way we could talk via email so I could inquire more about the trifoliata and if you have any cuttings if I could purchase from you?

I've eyed this one up a few times but learned that it's a noxious invasive in my area, can take over entire forests if the birds carry off the seeds, so I decided not to. Good to see it's working well for you, I'm sure it behaves differently in different climates.

In Seattle Cascade Foothills, we bought a former nursery with an Akbeia and it had overtaken it's arbour, Aronia bushes, burning bush tree, etc. If you can grow it like Angela on a huge large surface, it looks like it does well, but for a garden arbour situation, i would not advise as it behaves invasively.

@@jdubmac makes sense for Seattle! But where the birds can speed the seeds it makes no sense at all to sacrifice the forest.

Yeah, I wonder if our cool summers mean they don’t fruit as well. I have definitely caught two of them tip rooting so I keep on top of it. I think most folks are underprepared to grow vines in general, be it kiwi or wisteria or Akebia or even clematis montana. I forgot to mention part of the reason I put the Akebia on the woodshed with my kiwis is I am already pruning my kiwis three times a year to keep them under control, so it’s easy to hack back the Akebia and keep it well behaved while I’m there.

@@ParkrosePermaculture Oh yeah, cooler summers is a big difference, plus we also have pretty cold winters too. Maybe they need to heat for the seeds to sprout too. That's a good plan with the trimming - I do have a hardy issai kiwi, it's difficult to get it to fruit but it doesn't need a polinator.... it's a trade off. The trimming really does help it fruit better though, finally got fruit off it a bit last year instead of it all just dropping before it came ripe. That's a good combo, putting it with another vine that needs trimming too. Good work flow optimization!

Would akebia grow in tropical areas or it's a temperate climate plant?

If anyone wants to keep squirrels out of their yard or fruit trees, I have recently applied a product to where I know they access my backyard and it has worked incredibly well so far. It's called Tanglefoot and it's like a tree pitch that you "paint" on. They hate it being on their feet and will avoid the spot like the plague. It also comes with a tree wrap but the manufacturer says if you don't want to hassle with the wrap that it won't hurt the tree but will leave a stain. For trees, since a squirrel can jump @ 4', I put a ring of it around the 4-5' height of the trunk. I also put it on the fence corners that they walk along to access my yard.
