I missed the Kickstarter on this one, but did pre-order it following its release and listening to multiple reviews. I've not been drawn to app-driven games for all reasons you've listed here and previously, but after hearing multiple reviewers who don't typically like app-driven games praise this game for the app, I'm certainly intrigued. I don't currently have any RPG games in my collection, but I do have a few that will deliver within the next year (e.g., Too Many Bones - picked that one up with burncycle). Excited to try this one and dip my toe into the RPG pond as a Lucky Duck.

I have a big problem with solo. The whole board game becomes superfluous. You can basically play without the board at all (and I have). The only physical thing that matters is rolling dice and keeping track of stats, which could easily have been done in the app. For multi player, it's not clear if the person should be reading their personal interactions. If no, then people sit around in silence while another person plays a mobile game on their turn. If yes, some people don't enjoy having to read aloud large sections of flavor text to everyone. This probably would have been better if there was voice acting for the interactions. I still plan on playing more because the narrative is good.
@1AngelAlita

Yes, as solo this looks like a computer game. Period. Only with more players it starts to actually resemble a board game. Somewhat. I'm still not sure if it's a good idea to invest in this "board game" or not...

I've played a 3 player game. Thematics is a huge part of this game. You could play without the tiles, but why? On other players turns, not only are you thinking about your next move you really should be listening to other players story bc it could possibly give you clues to accomplish your destiny. I enjoy this more than Mansions of Madness.

Going by your new scale) I expected this to be a 5 over 4. So I expected greatness and figured I'll have a couple small negatives...... After some first solo impressions on Challenger mode, it's more like 5 over 1 or 2. On Challenger mode it's a complete luck fest whether you happen to go and find the right stuff. No skill at all. My choices don't matter. Did I go in the right direction? Nope. Oh well sucks to be me. It's way too time pressured. In fact I lost one tone because the app wasn't clear about where a major character was meant to be to start my finale, so I could not finish in the time so I'm not sure the app is foolproof as you say. Explorer's Mode is a little better but then the stories aren't really that interesting. Chronicles has much more intriguing stories and stuff like Tainted Grail and This War of Mine : Days of the Siege have far more immersive tales. I haven't tried competitive mode but frankly I see no purpose to having two other people there who you won't interact with much. I'm giving it some more time to win me over but I think we were playing two completely different games if this is a top rated game for you. 😜 And I tend to love narrative, thematic games. Also one tip, maybe a separate video to explain rating scales? I literally could not follow what was being said at all with three different rating scales being used with no visual aid on screen. 😅

@@BoardGameCo I see. Yeah its a complex answer more then a simple this or that from what I can see. I think a few simple things that are influencing me is ISS being scifi one of my favorite genres and games I don't currently own are scifi. Destinies on the other hand is definitely easier to table and play by myself while ISS id prefer to play with at least another person helping me along the way. Im just curious if ISS vanguard has quicker modes to play then the whole long campaign. I guess that might be what the book is for. I may have to come back to this conversation after the updated playthroughs for ISS.

I am interested in seeing how you find the Sea of Sand expansion. We LOVE the base game scenarios but found the first Sea of Sand scenario to DRAG and be a bit boring. This was probably exacerbated also trying out the 4 player 2v2 bound by fate expansion at the same time but I think the writers for these scenarios (always labeled before selecting in the app) are going to determine if you love the game or hate it. Hopefully the setting, theme, and writing click with you for the expansion but we won't be returning to the sea of sand unless they release new scenarios with a different writer.

I'm still on the fence for a SOLO perspective on this one regarding the length of the scenario and replayability. Do you have any insights for this? I've heard there's less than 3 hours of content (for solo). Any advices would be welcome! :)
@Cowinspace
3 жыл бұрын
This might be a little late for you but I've found it to be reasonably replayable as a solo game. I've played the first three scenarios and they are about an hour to two hours long and each of the three characters have two different objectives that can lead to their finale (though some overlap to make multiplayer competitive). You also have the differing stats and starting equipment that will impact the early game even if you know the scenario. Finally you have the in world timed events that (as of scenario three) can change one of the tiles permanently, add/move/remove NPCs and points of interest, and generally mean that you can't do everything in a single playthrough even in explorer mode. Finally you have the challenge mode that I haven't even been able to beat that requires you to to basically know a scenario inside and out. Single player also mean that the map is often revealed at a much slower rate (1 tile per turn compared to a maximum of 3 per turn in normal or 4 in the 2v2 expansion). So replayability will be judged on whether you enjoy playing the same scenario from a different viewpoint, replaying scenarios to see new tiles and timed events, or learning a map well enough to beat the challenge mode.

Comments on your dislikes: - Back button, that would be nice but we have played four 3-player games and not had an issue, so perhaps you guys need to slow down a bit. - A person has started their finale while others are into theirs, this is normal for any competitive game where people get ahead of others to the winning condition. But after four games I am getting rid of it without playing the two expansions. The BIG problem is a combination of - all players SHARE the missions between each other and the OPEN information (for everything !) means if you discover something for your mission you HAVE to succeed right then else someone else doing the same mission will show up next and take it. We didn't notice it that much in the intro scenario and first mission in the campaign but by the 2nd & 3rd missions it was so obvious that it was both ridiculous and depressing at the same time, at least one person had their game ruined in both of them. Even in other board games with similar either the actual mission or the information you can find on the board is hidden (in good games both). In the end I will call this a nice family-friendly level game but not really for experienced gamers, as mentioned I have the KS Core + 2 expansions and we will finish the last mission in the Core and then I will sell/trade it. Disappointed.
@ashtensaw776
3 жыл бұрын
For your point regarding the same quest: So you're saying that even though everyone is playing different characters with different destinies, some of the quest overlap, and that only one person succeed right? In that case I assume there are multiple ways of getting that quest item? Or is the player forced to attempt the other destiny because it is a total dead end? Because that sounds like it sucks and is really bad design.
@anzac_exile3780
3 жыл бұрын
@@ashtensaw776 It is a 'family' friendly/introductory design - remember this is the first time they have done this, compare video games with those of 30 years ago. But, yes, there are three types of quests and the three characters will each have two of them, so each character will have one in common with each of the other two - they mentioned this in the review. There are probably enough quest options for two people to complete the same quest so if you don't mind the other players knowing what you are probably doing and then pinching your item when you find it at the end of your turn and can't complete it then it will still work OK for your group - just not ours. It IS a clever and relatively fun little game, the relative bit (in my opinion) being related to the level of gamer you are or what you want out of the game.

I still think the issue with some of these app driven games is choice. They should give the choice to play the game with an app or without the app. For me any games that force the app, I pass on buying.

I generally agree with you. That said, I'm loving this game.

@@BoardGameCo I have an interesting topic for somebody who sells board games. What do you think a game like this is worth in 5-10 years if the app is no longer supported? I think if I knew an app would always work, then I wouldn’t have such an issue with game that require it. Thanks!

@@BoardGameCo Great game to play with your kids it's got the app to draw them in and rules are very light. Not a dark theme like this game.

All 3 of us have had the vaccine, CDC says no masks required for people who've been vaccinated.
