Xivu being characterized as the sentimental one who cares only for the safety of her siblings is a neat call back to the idea that the hive gods are reflections of the classes, Savathun the warlock, Oryx the hunter and Xivu the titan. in lore, to be a titan is to defend humanity. The martial military aesthetic is windowdressing, a titan in lore is all about protecting people. Likewise with Xivu her war has the purpose of protecting her siblings.

My only question at this point would be the classic "Why wasn't Oryx a Disciple?" question. Sure, out of universe, it's because the concept of Disciples and The Witness were retroactively added to the storyline years after Oryx was introduced, but there has to be an in-universe reason too, no? Personally, it seems to me like Oryx was a fanatic of the Sword Logic in particular, not necessarily the Witness' idea of the Final Shape, somewhat like how Calus and Nezarec both had ideas of the Final Shape that don't quite seem to align with the Witness' goals.
@NinjaDeathSlap
Жыл бұрын
I would argue that just because he wasn't *called* one, doesn't mean that he wasn't. We still don't actually know what the specific criteria are for earning that rank (or if it's more of just a 'vibe'). Certainly, we know having your own agenda doesn't disqualify you, because every named Disciple has had their own interpretation of the plan of the Witness, and at least one (Savathun and arguably Eramis too) is known to have actively worked against it more than once; and it's *definitely* not judged on a scale of power, because Oryx at the height of his strength would have roflstomped both Calus and Eramis without breaking a sweat. If you define a Disciple just by the criteria of the two things all the Disciples we know about have in common (A: Have communed directly with the Witness, and B: Wield powers of Darkness given to them by the Witness) then Oryx absolutely fits that bill. For me, I think he just preferred not to explicitly call himself a Disciple for the same reason he called himself the Taken King despite not actually being the Taken's true master. Propaganda. Oryx was all about self-promotion, and it didn't suit him to label himself as subservient to anyone, not even his God.
@somedudewithakeyboard5388
Жыл бұрын
@@NinjaDeathSlap That bit about the Taken really bugs me, because it'd be a case of Oryx just openly accepting a gift of power without earning it, which would seem to go against his entire philosophy of earning your right to exist, which he is abundantly clearly devoted to beyond everything else. You could make the argument that he simply accepted the gift because he perceived it as the Deep itself granting him power, and not the Witness. Which could possibly make sense as the Darkness and the Witness are 100% not the same thing, in despite of many misconceptions which I somehow see going around. That's what I feel is the difference between Oryx and the Disciples; Rhulk, Eramis, Calus, and almost certainly Nezarec have all directly spoken with the Witness in person, in the case of Oryx, we only know he communed "with the Deep", and in a manner of conversation which truly does not sound like the Witness at all. Seriously, imagine the Witness saying the classic "My man Oryx" line, it just... isn't something that character would say Overall, I personally think Oryx's whole situation is one we'll never get a true, 100% answer to, primarily because his origins and status are completely changed and inverted with the introduction of the Witness. His story is a relic of an earlier era in Destiny's history, one which was massively different to current D2

I believe it's because The Witness was content or wanted Oryx and his siblings right where it wanted. They are, along with the Hive and Worms used a sort of both the frontline chattel and the clean up crew. Heck, the power that Hive have is just a intentionally flawed version of the one used by The Witness and it's Disciples. It should be noted that all of the Witnesses forces are made as tools and having varying levels of disposablity. Look at Calus who was made a Disciple as glorified bait, where as Rhulk and Nezarec were both devoted and power lieutenants. It also makes sense to me, that The Witness would groom Savathûn as a Disciple-in-waiting. The Witch Queen was the most creative and cunning of her siblings. These traits only further developed over her eons of using them. In Savathûn, The Witness likeky saw both a greater asset and a potential danger if left "unsupervised". Hence why Rhulk was put in charge as her overseer. Thankfully, I think The Witness and it's Disciples did underestimate how much Savathûn had evolved in her cunning. Because for she managed to decieve everyone for a time.

The entry in the 8th Book being from Savathun at some point prior to her becoming a Guardian could be the product of Strand at work. Strand could be at work linking the minds of Eris Morn, Savathun and Xivu Arath through resonant psychic energies and memories buried within Savathun's throne world, and the 8th Book of Sorrow that is manifesting is doing so as a collection of their thoughts.

I'm inclined to believe at least this part of the 8th book is more true than not because it tracks with what we heard in Xivu Arath's own calcified fragments during Season of the Deep. In the part where she was reminicing about her time as a Kryll abord the needle with Auryx and Sathona you can definitely hear the sentimentality that this chapter mentions. It's also clear that she mourns deeply for Oryx still, and her fury at Savathun is more than just an ideological disagreement. She takes the betrayal personally. As much slaughter as she's responsible for, it makes me pity Xivu more than I ever could Oryx or Savathun, because she's not *just* angry. It's like she feels every emotion as a raw nerve on her surface all the time, anger is just the most impactful way she has to express all of that. In this way I'd describe her as having more humanity than her siblings, albeit a very damaged sort of humanity. She expresses herself like a child who craves the approval and guidence of a parental figure. After her real father's death, she projected that onto Auryx/Oryx, and now Oryx is gone she's trying to project that onto The Witness. I don't think she's 'redeemable' because I don't think she's capable of changing that about herself, and I don't think the Traveller will ever really offer the guidance she craves, but I think it will make her eventual demise either at our hands or the Witnesses more tragic. (Man after writing all that I kind of want a 'Therapist Reacts to the Ozmium Dynasty' video...)

Savathun's addition to the original Books of Sorrow is more ironic than prophetic in my opinion. A big part of deception is not only telling a believable lie, but also creating doubt about the honesty of other sources. So, I think that when she wrote "These books are full of lies", it doesn't matter if she was correctly calling out Oryx for inflating his accomplishments or not. What matters is that in trying to follow her nature, she accidentally told a truth.

The only solid theory I can come up with is it is Amanda Holiday resurrected. The club on the weapon is eerily similar to the Ace of Spades, and we know Amanda and Cayde were pretty close. The other is more far fetched. I'm wondering if the Eris that came back from the dark below is actually Taox. I find it weird that Savathun and Xivu seemed to talk about Eris in the latest tape recording for this weeks seasonal content. Supposedly it took place directly after the death of Oryx, according to Immaru. Why would they see her as Hive already back then? Just food for thought. Xivu has always been utterly devoted, and when her brother died we saw she absolutely doubled down on believing the lie. It has been her trusted weapon to protect herself and her family from a universe she believes is cruel and unyielding. With it, she believed she doesn't have to fear anything anymore. How would we be able to catch up to that power in such little time? Unless there is some sort of catch in how we are gaining power for Eris

It could be that everything we are doing this season could be tithing straight to Eris. That and we seem to be more efficient in the art of killing than most other hive.

Hmmm... Perhaps Savathun is planning to body snatch eris? Maybe all of these rituals are secretly transforming eris into a perfected vessel of sorts? Maybe this would allow her to use dark, light, and the powers of a hive god. Without any concern for consequence? The key to entering the traveler could be as simple as ( and potentially a let down to many ) forcing light and dark together, back into its supposed or theorized primordial state? After all, savathun strikes me as the type of person to have plans on plans on plans. If I'm savathun and I'm thinking of whats to come, I'd want to have multiple plans and tricks in place to prevent the gaurdian or vangaurd from killing me and immaru for good, the moment I reveal the information they want. And if I were to want to fool proof my plan, I'd make sure that I'd have some form of black mail, perhaps that of tying my life to that of one of their allies. "Kill me, and you kill them" type of deals. Sure, she could be coy about things, and only give us a piece of the information we need...

I kinda wish that oryx actually spoke to the darkness and not the witness, like it would’ve been better I think than it just being the witness and idk to have oryx be unique and the power to take unique to him would’ve just been better

Immaru flat out said Savathun was plotting, it doesn’t take much to determine something is off🤷🏼♂️ This was her talking about the past? And if we can get xivu back, she will fight the person who lied to her till death

Sure is weird for Savathun to keep mentioning that Xivu is the sentimental one in a lore entry where she does nothing but reminisce.

Could the collective unconscious of the Hive be the 8th book's author? We're reading this that come from the minds of gods, and they're presenting themselves to us, so that would make us not only Eris' acolytes but also her prophets and disciples.

Yeah, but when you think about it. Eris said every kill we do gives her power EVERY SINGLE ONE like imagine if she became hive eariler when we killed like Rhulk and Nezerec she would be very powerful. I feel like at the end Eris and Xivu could be at very equal footing in terms of power levels by the end of the season.

Logic would dictate that your statement is accurate. The Gaurdian has already defeated Oryx and his whole lineage! Xivu Arath may be the Hive god of war, but Xivu looked up to Oryx. I think Eris was capable of "Ascending to a Hive god" a looooooong time ago, but chose not to because we as the Guardian exist. We were able to help take the pressure of her vengeance off her shoulders, for a time. I think our support was what enabled Eris on the path to her own redemtion. The Gaurdian opened that door for her. That's why she will beat Xivu Arath. We believe in Eris Morn, so now she believes in herself! That's why we tithe to her. That's why this works so splendidly narratively speaking. It's just Sword Logic after all.@@dropkick3024

@@MelDSnownot neccessarily, remember savathuns terms were just we "deal with" Xivu, that could simply be having her and Eris stuck at an impasse and incapable of defeating each other. All savathun wants is Xivu to not be capable of interrupting her, difficult to do that without killing Xivu given the war god wants nothing more than to murder savvy, but not impossible.

I get that bit every narrator or writer can't always be completely trusted in stories like these - but it is absolutely fucking exhausting that we always assume everything darkness connected is probably a lie without any meta analysis. If it was, it would be terrible writing and we know Bungie is not full of terrible writers. No. This is truth, because there's no IRL narrative reason for it not to be. When writing fiction it's ok to lie if and only if that lie accomplishes an objective in manipulating the reader. Even then, the work is better if it accomplishes this by omission rather than outright lying as the author.
@S3Cs4uN8
Жыл бұрын
I think the only instance where Bungie has outright lied in a lorebook is Truth to Power, but that particular book is so bold-faced about it that it's hard to believe it is anything but lies. You could include Martian Missives and Unveiling as well on that short list of 'Outright lies'.
