34:10 there are at least a few instances where people can be primed to believe that they remember to such a degree that overtime a false memory can compound and replace the initial fuzzy one. I'm not saying she's being primed, but that it's happened before. There was a famous one where a woman misidentified her rapist only to have the rapist be vindicated much later, but by then the woman already had the original face in memory overwritten by the misidentified person.

Just started this, but it reminds me so far of a woman from my highschool that I was acquaintances with. She's presently out of prison, but her mother would abuse her for poor grades and recital performances. One day, she had been dosed and went to class but was sent home for the drug use, her mom started the same thing and she snapped, stabbing her mother to death. Afterwards she called her father and told him what happened. It was a huge case at my school and in Kansas City at the time, because she was Chinese American who was 16 and victim of repeated abuses and many people tried to argue she should be tried as an adult using mostly racialized claims about where her parents had come. Happy to say, she is now out, married, and working very hard to be invested in the local community and reforms in Kansas City. Not super relevant, but much of the home life being described reminded me of this situation alot.

9:30 I agree with Destiny that in most cases when you lie, giving specifics, is too far fetched. But i also believe in the case of a very traumatic experience or a life death situation, your brain kinda slow down how you perceive time and starts noticing everything in more detail. I'm pretty sure i've heard many times that people engaged in those traumas, were able to give a lot of detail, like for example being able to have a face artist draw a very good sketch of a murderer by a witness. I haven't been in that case but it's a guess. I would assume that if you were walking down a street and saw two person talking VS the same scenario but one of them shoot the other person, in that second case you would have this kind of picture of the guy who did it, a clear photo of the moment, engraved in your short memory. And my guess is that on the long term, your memory would do the opposite, trying to "burry" as much surrounding that traumatic event ? Idk i'm not a psychologist, i'm just assuming, would love a professional opinion :P
@subzer0665
3 жыл бұрын
in the vid she lies exactly how I do when im lying about a story. Using the word because a lot especially like when she says "because I was sitting next to the stairs" or anything like this. Ive never noticed until now, this way of using because is used as an add-on to certain parts she was lying about in order to sound like the story makes sense. If a person was actually living the events this would be almost never seen amongst a story telling for an investigation. Its said by the narrator and by destiny, shes so focused on remembering what happened such as a person in her shoes would buuuut because of her use of "because" it seems she is hyperfocused in slipping little building block details in.
@Leinja

In one of Lawrence Sanders' books, "The Second Deadly Sin", the main character (a detective) basically confirms that the murder suspect did it by asking him what he had for lunch. The suspect recounts in great detail what he had for lunch during the day the victim was murdered, even though the murder happened quite a while ago. Then the detective asked what he had eaten more recently and surprisingly the suspect couldn't remember, and the detective points that this is because he didn't NEED to remember. He explains that often criminals make up a too precise story and "remember" details no normal person would.
@Silvergrooves42
3 жыл бұрын
I remember reading a book from dominic o' brien, where he claimed you had short-term memory, long-term memory, and what he called "flashlight" memory, where your brain takes extremely detailed snapshots of certain moments, and that happens at moments of extreme pressure, like with traumatic events. I even seem to recall (but could be wrong) this memory resided in a slightly different area of the brain than the other 2 memories. But Idk, I'm not a professional either :)
@TheFreshTrumpet

Yep I’m really surprised he’s so clearly a fan of psychology but doesn’t know about some of the most well-known facts like this. It’s not uncommon for a person with PTSD to remember, say, the color of the room they were assaulted in but not where the place is or how they got there/left. Memory is just weird like that, especially when trauma is involved

@@Plainbear No. The way you refer to someone can speak to your relationship to them. You would call an acquaintance who you may not of gotten the name of "that gentleman over there." Do you know what is another word for Mother? Mom. But when we love our Mother or Father(in America) you usually refer to them as Mom, Dad, Mama, Pops, etc. When you have a worse relationship, or do not like them, you use what is called "distancing language" for them like "Mother." Just like you will hear incels or pick up artists refer to men as men as women as "females." it is distancing language. You are speaking clinically. That mother example is THE textbook example, and guess how she refers to her dead Mom? "My Mother." You may think you are in full control of every word you say, but you are not.
@-xphobia
3 жыл бұрын
Yup, she also calls her killed before her eyes mom "Mother" which is a very cold way of speaking and usually means you have a bad relationship with them. Another vote for putting these in podcast mode. As makes some of the debates or things like this usable on train with just headphones and not need to pay money for screen to go off.

What’s interesting is there are tons of examples where officers have pressured suspects enough that they say or agree to incriminating statements. It’s a lot easier than you would think.

Interestingly enough it's theoretically possible with a van or helicopter to see "water" (we are mostly water) move around a room from a van using non ionizing radiation. There are REX sensors for security systems that use RCR instead of PIR. A more advanced version of RCR could be used to track what could be presumed to be people moving around inside a structure.

@@tryga3138 In her mind, she possibly thought it was better to get some insurance money and possibly the house instead of getting disowned from the family and be erased from their will. In both cases she loses contact with them but in one she ends up with nothing and the other she ends up with her parents money. Well if not caught anyway. I feel this is what she taught. Cold. But calculated. It makes sense. In a sick way.
