The dreaded Fantasy variation - you face it, don't know what to do, study some theory after the loss...six months later, you face it, don't know... 😂😂😂

It must be understood as a high class waiting move. f3 is not particularly helpful for white...unless black simply tries to go for typical Caro plans. When black understands that he can strike a balance by allowing white a "hanging pawns" center (two floating pawns in the center) while counterbalancing with e5 and keeping up with CAREFUL development, he will be fine. Alternatively, if Black is comfortable in closed structures, they can go for the Bb4 lines in which he must be willing to hold tension and balance development with positional aims.

I am 1700 and it is insane how many people I play get mated by this. If not mated then I have a winning position right out of the gate. Thanks for making this.

As a Fantasy player, it's becoming really predictable. I lick my chops when black puts this on the board. Seems like A LOT of people have taken Banzea's advice.

As someone who has struggled against the fantasy for a long time, i do love this line. I'm ~2000 in blitz and often get great positions out of the opening. I find the best thing about this opening is that typically in the fantasy i'm on the defensive but in this, even if white knows what they are doing, you often ruin their defenses and get an even and open game. It would be fantastic if you could post some more games in this line against some higher rated players as there aren't any other videos in this line on youtube. Thanks for the video!

After bringing your bishop and queen out, what do you do if white moves their knight to a4? The only option I can find is to check with your bishop then trade queens. That leaves white better.

A day late. I lost a game in this variation playing black only last week, it’s so rare you see it at my level that I simply forgot how to deal with it. Got an idea for a video you might want to tackle because I can’t imagine I’m the only player to go through this while trying to improve. My rating went up 300 in about a month of rapid improvement, but I failed to consolidate, giving back about half of it. What was weird is that I knew in many games I was losing against weaker players but my confidence was shot, I just couldn’t seem to calculate or find the lines I was during the rise. Any ideas?

People always after the sequence (1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. f3 e5 4. dxe5 Qb6 5. exd5 Bc5 6. Nh3 Bxh3 7. gxh3 Bf2+ 8. Ke2 cxd5), play: 9. qxd5 Which is difficult to play with this bishop, because it either leads to too delayed development or a forced exchange of queens, which I don't like, because it's better not to exchange when the opponent's king is in the center.

As a Fantasy player, I lick my chops when I see this line. It's by no means a refutation of the Fantasy, and Black has to accept a complex queenless and drawish middle game with best play. Instead, they often given an extra check with the Queen and lose the bishop ; ) Guys, either study the drawish ensuing endgame or choose a better line. There are several stronger options for black.

According to the Lichess database, the Fantasy Variation (vs Caro Kann) is very rarely played. Non-masters only play it 4% of the time and masters play it even less frequently, 3% of the time. Nonetheless, this is a handy little trap to know.

Sorry. I don't believe in this trap too much. I'm 1000elo (so fairly rubbish player)and play the fantasy as white. I know that the fantasy is not about grabbing lots of free pawns in the opening. I know my black diagonal is going to be weak in this opening, and at some point I'm going to play Nc3, rather than grabbing free pawns. So I don't know, as black, this not a general strategy I'm keen to go for, it relies too much on white understanding nothing about the fantasy. This is just my opinion.

I don't understand why QxNd4 is preferred over BxNd4 at 15:10
@xnlzerzx
7 ай бұрын
I understand simplifying but the bishop would be a more forcing move, either forking king and rook, so either queen takes which is a blunder, bishop slides back which can be taken by Nc4 or the king moves which allows taking the rook and then forcing queen trade after winning the rook
@xnlzerzx

Only downside is it weakens f7 but white has no light squared bishop so that wouldn't be much of a problem

Please, I need help with this Fantasy sequence… e4 c7, d4 d6, f3 e6, dxe6, Qb6, Nc3 Bd4, Na4 Bb2+, and now Ke2 Qd4, QxQ BxQ, exd6 Bxd6 … How do I handle the N on a4 variation? When I search, the lines I’ve found favor White.
