If the watch has Hardy's banking (devised around 1800), there's no problem with a tripping escapement. Many Swiss pivoted detent watches were fitted with this device.

A fantastic video! Could you please make a similar one about what can go wrong with Breguet's natural escapement? I am curious why the natural escapement was not adopted as widely as the Swiss lever escapement.

Thanks for your appreciation. The natural Breguet escapement does not have a gallop problem (gallop problem only concerns the detent escapement and the duplex escapement). I think the natural Breguet escapement is not widely used because of the number of components (4 wheels instead of just one for the Swiss lever escapement). In addition, because of the wheels superposition this escapement is thicker than the Swiss lever escapement.

@@Waterpearl_escapement Thanks for the reply. I think the cylinder can gallop as well unless the balance has a "pin" to prevent that from happening. I did not mean to suggest that the natural escapement suffers from gallop but I remember reading in G. Daniels' Art of Breguet that the natural escapement is also sensitive to shocks. If I recall correctly, after a shock, the natural escapement can get into a position in which it cannot move anymore (a.k.a. it "sets"). So, I was hoping you could make a video of the natural escapement setting. BTW: how big are these models? The look pretty massive.

I would recommend Daniels' The Practical Watch Escapement for details on the shortfalls of the Natural Escapement. In short, the interaction between the two escape wheels, receiving and transmitting force in two different directions and causing some jiggling, is the cause of error, especially over time. Beautiful design.

Very nice demo video. Could you please explain: (1) How does the balance wheel gets it energy from the escape wheel? (2) What is the function of the longer pallet which doesn't appear to make contact with anything? Many thanks.

In normal operation, the amplitude of the balance is less than 360 °, the detent is released once per period of oscillation, therefore the balance receives only one pulse per period of oscillation. When the amplitude of the balance exceeds 360 ° the detent is released several times and then the balance receives several energy pulses which allows to maintain the tripping phenomenon. The long pallet on the balance is used to receive energy from the escape wheel. At high tangential speed of the balance, this pallet is only slightly pushed by a tooth of the escape wheel

It appears that the impulse from the escape wheel is being delivered too late or a delay in the train with a loss of efficiency. Unless it's my imagination!

This is true, at the maximum speed of the balance wheel, the escape wheel lags due to the unlocking and inertia of the gear train and therefore does not give a good energy impulse.

That's the impulse jewel. If you watch carefully in the slow motion, the escapement makes contact with it right after it lifts the pallet. This imparts energy into the balance wheel, which is what keeps it moving.

In lever escapement, momentum is added to the balance wheel by sliding along an angled pallet, which introduces variance due to dust, lubrication change, and/or wear. Detent escapement is designed where nothing is sliding against each other. However, as show in the video, the tradeoff is that detent is more finicky, which is fine for marine chronometers, where accuracy is paramount and they can afford to "baby" the watch. The detent escapement receives only one impulse on every alternate swing of the balance so the balance is basically more detached from the escapement allowing it more time to do its own thing without interference and additional friction from the escapement. Example of a frictional rest is the cylinder escapement where the escape wheel is in constant contact with the balance and timekeeping suffers as a result. With minimum contact timekeeping is greatly improved.
