The real tragic part about this scenario is that no matter how you handle it, Darrow wins. He wanted people to fear and hate augmentations as much as he had grown to, and with 50 millon people dead from crazy augs, they do. Just look as what they've already shown of Mankind Divided. It's also a really interesting contrast between Adam and Darrow. Adam was augmented against his will, yet his body is basically tailor-made to accept augmentations. On the other hand, Darrow is practically the father of augmentation science, yet he can't use augmentations at all.

@@macklinbutcher3145 Darrow is right because there's no alternative. Someone will have the key to control augmentations and even if now holders of those keys are good one day that will change. Paul Denton in the first game said "It's only a matter of time before someone clever and ambitious figures out that the tools of dictatorship have been ready-made by well-meaning governments." Tong was wrong because in Deus Ex 1 helios is an option.
@macklinbutcher3145

@@Spokenword Well yeah. Helios would ensure that no one can control augmentations. That's the point. Augmentations are fine themselves. But the system will pervert it for it's own uses. Destroying the system with Helios is the only way to ensure that the only one controlling augs is the individual who has them, as well as making it a public utility instead of enslaving the poor and allowing the rich to play god. Darrow has no interest in changing the system. He benefits from it just like the rest of the Illuminati. He only did this because he wasn't able to play god more. If he can't have it for himself, then no one can. He's a spiteful child. There are alternatives. Revolutionaries like the Dentons and Helios can prove it. Darrow ain't looking for change. Jensen is too much of a reformist, which will probably play a role in his downfall. Augs can be used to benefit and free all, but everything must change. And this a prequel so that can't happen yet.
@Spokenword
3 жыл бұрын
@Macklin Butcher Helios wouldn't ensure that no one can control augmentations, he would ensure that the people who have that control won't use it maliciously. The only way that a key that controls them isn't going to be made is if augs no longer get produced or existing ones never get improved or repaired. Even then some terrorist group could make something like it or it could even be demanded by the population (see: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided plot). Therefore, the best option is this human + AI hybrid that reads every thought of every citizen and will snuff out any trace of ill intent. You could argue that Darrow does it out of spite but it is possible that he thought that he knew best what to do. The thing about people like Denton is that it's ultimately a matter of chance. It's by chance that he was made and that he turned to the good side and in order to turn to the good side bad things have to happen and people have to die. Whenever augmentations are worth such a sacrifice is what i can't answer. The only two options for augmentions to never be used wrongly are either: all humans turn good or the perfect goverment is made (Helios). At the timeline of this video there were no such possibilities even fathomable so Darrow was right.

Darrow's belief is sometimes misunderstood. His fundamental belief is that humans wanting to augment themselves, mentally/physically, is bordering wanting to become 'gods.' To resist what makes people human, our flaws, and our mortality. Amongst others. That is why he says, "People believed we should steal fire from the gods and redesign human nature." He believes that we have gone too far. He knows down the line immortality will be possible because of augments. That we will be able to manipulate and create new consciousness using augments inside a persons brain. Will they still be 'human?' Maybe he sees that being human is what stops us from killing each other in a genocide like manner. That's why he says, "But human nature is the only thing we have that gives us a moral compass, and the social skills we need to live in peace." Possibly once we become so far removed from being human, someone will want to end all of it. Maybe we will hate what we've become but at that point it might be too late. What our human nature is, is slowly decaying even in our current time if we take the time to look around. We progress, and we leave our humanity behind, piece by piece. We gamble, not knowing the consequences. Only time will tell.

When you use the CASIE augment against Darrow, Jensen will point out that what Hugh did (caused worldwide chaos) was all because humans are becoming what Hugh wanted to be but couldn't because of his genetics that made Hugh impossible to adapt to augmentations (In which is ironic because he is the one who invented human augmentation). Darrow is actually a good character with very bad views from his peers and his own students, especially the Perfect Clone of the Illuminati's founder being Bob Page, who as we all learn from the original founder, was quite literally the form of human evil. People CAN learn from Hugh's advice and desires for human-centered ascension, but it was actually our greedy tribal leaders and kings who wanted that power only for themselves. Jensen may not have seen it but, Hugh Darrow may have been interested in Adam becoming his successor and help the Denton clones be completed to end Bob's power mania? Shame we can't see the pov of the other evil or anti-evil characters like Zeke or Eliza.

When you use the Casie Aug, you get a more...what I feel, the raw inner truth then what we get here. Darrow's reaction in the CASIE challenge honestly felt the most human and honest in that response and really head-shaking shameful as to why he did it. Honestly, for all of his accomplishments, all of his work, his prestigious academic background, even after he opted not to go to college, and achievements, lies a spiteful bitter child that could not bear to see the world to move on with his augmentations without him. If he could not have it, no one can. Under all that prestige and arrogance of how he views others, lies a human, nothing more, nothing less. And it's funny. Adam was a B+ average student in a public high school who was the captain of the debate team, and I'm sure Darrow way more than just knowing that, looked down on his intelligence. To oust Darrow in an argument felt really satisfying, especially on how Darrow sees others not on his level. To a point, the only thing I could understand, is bitterness that can definitely eat you up. We're only human and our emotions can get the better of us. I could, to some extent, understand the feeling of the festering anger that builds up seeing the world move on without you, but going to the extent of how and why he did it, trying to justify it, saying it's a weapon and that it won't be used for evil, only to hide the real truth within, to result in what he did to the world. Horrible, so horrible. All of what he did, now he'll be remembered as such a monster he says he is scared to be. I love this game so much. Deus Ex alone got me into philosophy and even Cyber Security. I quote so many dialogues not only from here, but other of the games too. I've written quite a few class discussions and even some papers in some of my classes that require essays, academically citing Deus Ex quotes to add to my discussions and papers!

He was trying to stop humanity from destroying itself with augmentations, trying to stop them from turning themselves into machines and destroy what defined them as human beings. While it is true augmentations were helping some people, they were overall being abused by society. Just look what Tong's Harvesters and the Illuminati were doing with it before this took place. It was only going to get worse. While Hugh's methods were extreme and over the top, I can't say I fully blame him. While it's obvious that Darrow is meant to be akin to Daedalus to Jensen's Icarus (he even calls himself Daedalus), you ever noticed that Darrow shares Jensen's hairstyle and beard? Hardly a coincidence I believe. Whereas Jensen is naturally ideal for augments, Darrow is naturally completely resistant to them. They are two sides of the same coin in that manner, and when you consider how Jensen, an orphan child was basically saved from a horrible death, completely transformed by Darrow's technology, this in some manner makes him the brainchild of Darrow's work. The parrallels in this game are amazing, if a bit unsubtle.

I always admired how they explored this concept. In Fullmetal Alchemist, though I don't believe it was ever directly said, but it is shown time and time again that having metal "replacement" limbs is nothing like having the real thing, and certainly never preferable to what the human condition desires deep down, to "feel" more of the world in the truest sense. Sure, metal limbs have endless potential, but it could be far too easy for humanity to be willing to intentionally throw away their humanity for a downgrade. If I were in the Deus Ex world, I genuinely do not know where I would stand on the issue in any way. Practical, spiritual, reliance, the stripping of humanity, etc. There's so many ways to look at it. Not having a clear answer is what makes it so interesting, after all.
