Donkerbroek (Netherlands) - Major damage was caused on the N381 after a truck started to sway and then came to the side of the road and jackknifed. The contents came out of the trailer and were scattered all over the road. Large square steel/concrete blocks lay in the middle of the road, against the guardrail and in the ditch. The forklift fell out and ended up partly under the trailer. The impact was so hard that the asphalt was severely damaged over a long distance. Holidaymakers in their camper saw it happen. She said that they were just shy of overtaking the truck and were able to brake in time. They escaped unscathed. The woman said they had enough food and drink to last a while. They still have a short distance to the campsite in Appelscha. Another motorist had taken a closer look and said that the large steel blocks were being tested on weighbridges. They have a weight of 1500 kilos.
People who had just passed the Donkerbroek exit stood still for about 2 hours. The police ensured that they were eventually able to turn around and leave the N381 driving on the wrong side. It became a slightly challenging job for trucks. They had to go all the way back. The road is expected to be closed all night. The center conductor needs to be repaired and parts of it need to be re-asphalted. And that after the truck has been recovered and the damage has been cleared. The truck driver escaped unscathed.
