Great topic! I’ve been a puzzler for decades and used to do so many 5000 + puzzles that it triggered a dust allergy! I’ve learned to manage this addiction so it doesn’t interfere in my life but just gives me joy and a time out from life. On the topic of BLE, this pandemic has pushed me to a place where I knew I had to address my food addiction before it destroyed me! So grateful to you and the program. Day 58 and feeling like I have the power to get my health on track. ❤️

lmao I cannot buy puzzles because of this issue. The final straw was the puzzle I stayed up all night solving before going to work all day. I ignored being cold, tired, hungry, etc, because I just did not want to stop.

I wish I had developed some type of exercise addiction instead when I was a kid. It wouldn’t have even been considered an addiction. I would have grown to be a famous athlete.

Wow! That puzzle story is so fascinating!! My daughter has Aspergers and it’s so hard to get her to do her homework or clean her room, but she will crochet all day. I thought it was simply executive functioning issues but now I’m seeing it in terms of dopamine. And with your story, it shows that we seek after those constant dopamine hits when we have a distressing situation hanging over our head. You wouldn’t have been so so attracted to that puzzle if you weren’t dreading the book writing, for example. So isn’t the answer to address the avoidance habit and why we have a distress response to the thing we are avoiding? So why is my daughter so “hooked” on crochet, there’s nothing obviously distressing in her life. Unless those executive functioning problems make the homework or cleaning her room so difficult to focus on and accomplish that she turns to the dopamine instead, and legitimately doesn’t realize how much time has passed and her day is gone before ash knows it!

I experienced something like this a few years ago with a certain video game. I'd quit playing video games cold turkey in college because it was a big addiction. Then a few years ago, I tried it again. This was about 10 years after having last played a an console video game. My roommates were both gone for a weekend. One told me I could play his Playstation while he was gone. I thought, "Hmmm it's been 10 years. Maybe I could do it healthily now." So I went and bought a used copy of my favorite game. And I spent 60 of the next 80 hours playing that game, in just 3 sittings. The 3rd sitting was 30 hours long, and I got out of the chair just once to use the restroom and make a cup of tea. I couldn't be gone from the game long enough to make food. After that binge, I took the disc out, burned a hole in it, and threw it away. The next morning, I looked at that disc in the garbage and thought, "I wonder if it'll still play. ... Of course it won't. ... I wonder if the store has another copy. ... They probably do, but NO DON'T DO IT!" Totally lost control. I can't play video games. Especially not that one.

Also, I've realised that pretty much all my 'addictive' behaviour are part of a wider problem of procrastination that I am struggling with. Can procrastination be an addiction i wonder?

Yes, I noticed a change in eating behaviors during covid! Almost everything was closed, I started working for home, and one of the only novel stimuli for me was getting take out. I really increased the amount of take out to fend off boredom and have some novelty in my day.

Thank you for your Clarity. My addiction to food and cigarettes play off each other. Can't seem to get a handle on either one. Back and forth back and forth. Over the last crazy year I got pulled in to a color by number app on my phone. It's called "Happy Color" lol. I have done at least 200 of these pictures. Your right about the dopamine hit you get from doing these. It's a major distraction from the stress I'm feeling. I have a very angry son that had to move home because of the covid shut down of the work he was doing. Hes trying to find his way in this crazy world right now. Thank you for helping us navigate our lives. 💜

I have been wondering about this since I got to this corner of the world. Thank you for putting it into words and suggesting an answer. A lot of people speak about dopamine downregulation and one needs bigger hit to feel normal, but that never quite made sense, since for me it surely wouldn't have done to substitute sugar for some other drug. At least not in the moment of a craving.

Omgosh this is me! I started limiting myself to the 300 or 500 piece ones that can be done in a few hours. Of course the quality and difficulty level are critical factors. As I’m trying to fall asleep, my brain is still working puzzles. My other addiction is extremely difficult sudoku. When I get ill or have a fever, my brain works sudoku all night long. As a recovering alcoholic, I thought these endeavors would be ok. Ha.

I sooo resonate with this. Using potentially benign goal oriented endeavors to check out-like a puzzle. Mine is “Words with Friends” game on my phone. 😂 This was such a funny & genuine Vlog. I really loved this one, the honesty and rawness of reveling in devouring a puzzle...and how we can find these little ways to wire up our brain-I find that I discover these new “habits” as I deplete the old binge eating pathways over time.

I resonated with this as well. Crossword puzzles are activities that I can either use responsibly or irresponsibly. I enjoy them and can use them as a fun pastime, like reading a book purely for enjoyment. But there have been times in my life when I've used crosswords for hours and days at a time to escape a reality of life or procrastinate. It's interesting to note what's going on but not be able to stop oneself. There is an element of acceptance to the fact that what is needed is a soother or a way to check out for a while. I've had to put crosswords aside for a while but I do seem to be able to come back to them for enjoyment again.

Are there any weekly Vlogs that could be recommended if I binged for 2 weeks and regained the full 10 pounds I had worked so very hard to lose? I’m having a hard time accepting that I am starting over scale-wise & integrity wise. This hurts. Thank you. I already wanted “the day after a binge”. If there isn’t a video I would love to see one about how to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and feel hopeful again when you’ve accepted that you truly did regain all your weight after a brief binge. Thanks.

Canned tomatoes. I am "using" canned tomatoes to self soothe. Canned tomatoes, can you believe it? Just started in past year. I have moved on to jars of no sugar salsa. Has burned my mouth and nether regions. Addiction is wicked.
