In this video, I was developing 'poser la voix' (placing the voice) with scales and arpeggios. This followed the first layer of the Student's Enhancement Program, which is to get students to match pitch using the 'messa di voce' technique.
However, instead of discussing vocal technicalities, I am going to discuss some teaching techniques and what I am doing here with my students.
These teaching techniques stem from my own experiences as a learner, as I am aware of the importance of not just teaching students how to sing, but also how to learn.
Here's what you can observe from the video - Technical Teaching for Senior Vocal Students:
1. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
Let them repeat the 'right sound' several times so they can integrate the proper technique.
2. 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
Allow them to make imperfections. I used to be very scared to hear 'wrong sounds,' but a more helpful perspective is that these are exactly the things we need to work on.
3. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀:
When they are doing the 'right thing,' we need to point out what they did correctly. Beginners sometimes confuse the unfamiliar feeling of correct singing with being wrong. They'll have doubts, so we need to keep repeating and highlighting what they did right.
4. 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
Repetition is key. We need to ask questions to students, first to engage them, and secondly to quickly check if they are absorbing the material. If not, we can explain it again.
5. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: Encourage peer learning. I had a very interesting experience:
I was coaching a year 3 student who has a very low vocal register to match a certain pitch. After teaching her for 15 minutes, she just couldn't get it. I had a year 4 student with the same vocal quality, so I asked the year 4 girl to help the year 3 girl. In just 15 minutes, they came back, and magic happened. The year 3 girl could sing!
Sometimes, students have their own language among themselves, and when they use their own understanding to communicate, they can make remarkable progress. Through peer learning, they can translate what the coach said to each other and move forward.
Correction: The correct title in the video should be: Developing 'Poser la voix' with scales from 0:00 to 2:19.

If you are feeling miserable and struggling to execute certain steps you know are right to do, I’d like to empower you with insights I have developed throughout my coaching career, particularly from my latest Singers Enhancement Program.
This program supports senior singers from the SCCSJ Symphony Choir, ongoing since April this year. It addresses real-world challenges faced by vocal and choir coaches, often overlooked in educational discussions.
I've dedicated this eBook, "REAL-WORLD VOCAL COACHING: Insights From the Singers Enhancement Program," to newcomers in the music education industry, including my younger self.
