Devon and Somerset Staghounds Brendon Two Gates 14112023
On Tuesday 14 November, two Wildlife Guardian volunteer investigators paid the Devon and Somerset Staghounds a visit to the very public 'Brendon Two Gates' meet on the B3223. A lovely road which cuts across the high moor and connects Simonsbath and the Lynmouth area.
Traffic was light and the moor was sodden so this privileged hunt saw fit to meet in the road. They parted as we drove through in a 'Moses ' moment.
Many of the local wild Red Deer in this area live on the 'National Park owned moorland around 'Blackpitts' but unfortunately as is often the case the sporting rights on the NP land is held basically by the hunt themselves 'The Badgworthy Land Company'.
What we witnessed was as always sad to see so many people deriving enjoyment from terrorising wildlife and at times this was taking place on ENP land . The quarry was hinds and calves and the film incudes one amazing sight of an old matriarch hind trying to lead no less than four calves away from the hunt. The Hunting Act was brought in to abolish this pointless cruelty and the removal of the two hounds exemptions cannot come quick enough.
Its possible that not one deer was killed but we could not see everything .
From what we saw the deer were the winners and were close by when a drenched hunt field packed up and went home around mid afternoon.
