I just purchased this planer and find this presentation is by far better than several others videos I watched . Provides more detail on the set up and operation of any I have viewed. Nate does an excellent job in the presentation, he could have been hired by Dewalt. As with the other presentations, Nate far exceeds those.

@natelarge

1:39 Yes is says that, but when I used a shop vac it did a good job. I assume they don't what someone using a shopvac with a low cfm as it will clog so they just black list all shopvacs to avoid the confusion.
@AdamKirbyMusic

@@natelarge I used to use a shop vac with my planer and it removed the chips fine. What I did notice as a difference is I would get tons of static shocks from the metal body of the planer when using the shop vac, and after moving to a DC I receive no shocks. Weird.

What exactly is “sniping”?
@natelarge
3 жыл бұрын
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Snipe, in woodworking, is a noticeably deeper cut on the leading and/or trailing end of a board after having passed through a thickness planer or jointer.

For the money, it's not too terrible but still expensive. I've owned older planers and they were great. Much better than the crap pushed out these days. The pressed feed platens are pure junk but so far, I haven't found anything better. I think I'll wait to see what comes along before I throw five-six hundred bucks away. Thank you for sharing.

How did you reduce the snipe?
@natelarge
2 жыл бұрын
I did. Took about 30 minutes with many test paths. Doing micro adjustments. I dailed it in so that it is very hard to detect when you are looking at it. It may be possible to get to 100% gone but 99% was good enough for me. I will probably do a video on it now that you got me thinking. 🤔

Why should the snipe got away by adjusting the table? The wood got pushed up by the blade. So there must be something holding the wood down to prevent it. The table can not hold down anything. So adjusting the table seems useless to me.
@natelarge
3 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the angle of attack. The feed table will lift the wood so that it can't teeter up and into the blade when it is being held by only one roller. I have adjusted my feed tables and was able to remove 98% of the snipe. With a little more tuning I should get it perfect.
@JustinMurray170fin
2 жыл бұрын
@@natelarge I believe you are both right to some extent. You will not eliminate snipe through adjusting the feed tables alone - mitigate yes. To eliminate you'll need support (sacrificial piece/end). There's a direct correlation between the amount of snipe on all these benchtop thicknessers & the gap between rollers and the blades ie. that gap is unsupported and pressure is being applied on only one end. Least that's understanding?

I am at this point too + a bit of a Makita fanboy but IDK... Which did you go for as a matter of interest? I had purchased the Triton which is well-reviewed but my unit spiked at startup causing tripping and I had a nightmare sending it back, so it's a more 'established' brand this time around. I believe the Makita is easier to adjust the feed tables on (will prob. use a custom bed anyhow) and is a wee bit quieter but the Dewalt has lesser scolloping and a higher degree of precision in the cut?
