The final step, make sure to change the oil when you can!

Good job! 3rd tip, carry a spare pre-oiled air filter in a sealed baggie!

If the air filter is saturated water most likely got sucked down the gearbox breather hose behind the air filter. Definitely drain the water out of the sump before turning the engine over, the water separates from the oil just sitting there while you wring the air filter out and take the tank off, crack open the sump plug like Keith says and drain the water out, if you crank the engine over before you drain the water out of the gearbox it will get mixed with the oil and wont evaporate out. This has worked for me and many others on several occasions and you wont need to change your oil.

Letting out water in oil sump is a good tip. When I drowned mine I just removed the sparkplug and squirted the water out. Decided to keep on riding the trails until oil got really white. Did 2 oil changes in nearest gas station and kept going. Rekluse EXP plates didn't like the water and some friction pads came loose so it was expensive damage. Rekluse have updated their glue so latest revision is more water resistant. Rest of the clutch was in mint condition.

Once running, hold the air filter in front of exhaust to dry it out for a few minutes.

Yo Keith, just went thought this with quiet few blokes on the weekend, having watched it last week saying, dout this will ever happen to ....,anyway all worked out well, rode out of forest 80 km all good. cleaned bike today, oil puddled in airbox, below air in take,, clean that, then, oil was a touch milky in the glass have drained oil out of engine. it has no oil filter in atm. oil filter cap and all bolts are in and done up just pinch tight. poured some oil in it drained it out it looked good however, i was wondering after putting drain bolt back in if i could put a liter of diesel in it run it for a bit and drain it to flush it??

good to have kick starter to pump water out in case of weak battery.

Or you could just let it cool off for 10 minutes, crank it until it starts and drive 40 miles with water in the oil. Then let it sit overnight and discover the oil is a milky mess when the clutch is stuck the next morning. Then change the oil several times and be on your way. Like I did. :D

The KTM spark plug tool is a royal PITA to use in the shop under ideal conditions👎🏾 The thought of trying to use it in the field under adverse conditions gives me a nightmare while being awake. Nevertheless, I still carry it in my tool. The last time I checked the KTM spark plug tool was a north of $100 which I refused to pay. Thanks to your video it reminds, though, that 😭 crying about the cost of a thing is only momentary and it only happens once while at the cash register. When pulling out the proper tool from your tool role while stuck out in the middle of nowhere, there is never a thought about the price that was paid, just the 😅relief that you have it. Thanks 🙏🏾 for the video 👍🏾

Motion Pro make an aftermarket KTM/Husky spark plug socket.

Try doing that on T7. A good 2 hrs just to remove the spark plugs.

Ok if its clean water but if its murky with debris chances are any water sucked it to the engine breather will get in the lubrication system, score the cams and seized the big end then it's TJF! Last rebuild we did in similar circs was £1500 bill that's $3000 Aus bucks

Yes good point. This was a relatively clean, shallow river and it fell airbox "up" so we figured (hoped) good to go. Which it was...😎

So, did you start the bike without air filter ?

Initially, yes. Then once air filter was dried out a bit, we put that back in and continued.

I went for a forest ride last season, about 30 miles up a trail and through river crossings I realized I had forgotten to reinstall the air filter on the previous nights oil change. Could not believe it. Bike still runs fine. @@miro_s

do you have to remove the 17L tank to get at plug?

Yes. Maybe just lift it, like we did for the 15L in this vid.

The 500 has the worst designed air box cover of any dirt bike I’ve owned. Doesn’t seal at all and is low to the ground. I know it’s designed as an enduro bike but there is no way I’d take it through a crossing which my old DR could easily get through, with water at the top of the engine cases.

Agree... it is very low and lacks sealing. It is however very easy to access, maybe important for racing.
