I strongly believe Dexter is one of the few musicians you can recognise since the very first note. His attack and his sound are unique.

True, for me another one is Thelonious Monk, maybe it’s because of hist unorthodox style of playing the piano but i feel it is pretty recognizable!

Fabulous ! I love the moment in the out cadenza where Dexter is running out of keys on the horn (can't get any lower then Bflat) and Jones fills in the lowest tonic to complete the cadenza, Dexter smiles !

My God! The tone the sense of rhythm. The ability to tell an entire story with just a few notes. This is why I fell in love with DG 20 years ago in high school.

each note is a word, each sentence has a purpose, dexter takes you on a flying tour , follow the eagle high above all things. ---- he is a unique master at building his solo as a dramatic progression that never breaks until the very end. a genious !

Maybe good to add that the song played is 'Laura'. The piano player is the great Hank Jones, with on bass Gene Ramey and on drums Gus Johnson. Arnett Cobb playes some background lines at the end of the tune.

The fact that Arnett can even play backgrounds behind dex is a testament to Dexter's lyricism. He's playing the way he might behind a singer.

It is the great Hank Jones. A real giant who has been playing with almost all of the jazz gigants from Charlie Parker to Joe Lovano. He was the oldest of a trio of brothers which all became masters on their instruments: Elvin on drums who was a member of the great John Coltrane quartet and Thad who played with Count Basie and later on together with drummer Mel Lewis in the Thad Jones Mel Lewis orchestra. Thad was also a great composer and arranger.
