I have thought a lot about the ARM vs x86 thing. And just like Oliver said I think the ISA has not that much to do with the characteristics of a CPU. Its in my opinion down to Intel and AMD not seeing much profits and too much competition from established ARM designs in the mobile space. Matter of Fact Intel tried up until about 2015 to get into Smartphones and Tablet with the low powered Atom cores and they were quite efficient in fact. And the Steam deck also shows that x86 cores can absolutly be used in a mobile environment. Its just a matter of cost, existing technology stack and how profitible a company thinks such an investment would be. Also one small correction regarding the ARM instruction set : Newer ARM cores do in fact purge old legacy instructions. Matter of fact the new ARM v9 cores don't offer backwards compatibility with 32 bit instructions. But in the case of how ARM is mostly used - in phones its not a huge deal since Apple stopped supporting 32 bit Apps years ago and Android has a very robust stack to make it in many cases independent of the CPUs ISA.

Also, regarding in-house engines... I do think with games growing more complex and resource demanding, these are less and less convenient for development studios. Think of it this way - using 3rd party, popular engine like Unreal Engine have an advantage of being able to hire people mid-project and have them starting work on it quickly. You can also outsource a lot of stuff. You do not need to develop an entire internal toolset and train people in using it. This applies mostly to studios with less deep pockets, who just cannot maintain an army of employees between projects. Big studios who developed their own engines will probably still operate using them for a while, but I do think these technical solutions will morph into UE/Unity style, where they will be made available for other studios. Newest iteration of idtech would be a good candidate there, as well as Naughty Dog's/Santa Monica ones. Decima engine has already set precedent with Deat Stranding.

R.e the homogenising of the industry, I think it has a lot todo with the time and money that has to be invested in custom game engine solutions. It’s also wayy easier for studios to find experienced unreal or unity developers (imagine trying to find new skilled developers that know anything about red engine mid project lifecycle). For big orgs such as Sony it’s great to investment into an engine I.e. decima is something that can be used across child studios.

Sony suggesting the sabotage angle is basically them admitting that's precisely what _they_ would do if the shoe was on the other foot. They're honestly behaving like a spoiled teenager at this point

I mean they have been. High on life was great, pentiment was great (but sadly underrated because of it not being a triple A game) not to mention gamepass has got 4 new game releases. hi-fi rush. Not to mention Xbox having a larger set of games coming this year. Looks like Xbox is on a roll in my opinion.

For News 04: RT shadows and other forms of RT implemented in current games are some of the most underwhelming features ever. They arguably add little to no visual differences in real world gameplay (except when stopping to try and find a mirror, etc.) while costing half of the fps. AMD seems smart for almost ignoring RT so far

27:51 - I'm assuming Microsoft is alluding to Switch 2 for COD support, not current Switch generation. As you say, it's very hard to get a modern FPS even running decently at 30fps on current gen switch. SIDE NOTE: Apex Legends (Oliver calls this out later) and Overwatch 2 run 'ok' on Switch at 30fps, IMO. Definitely 'lesser' than any other system, but impressive nonetheless.

Speculation.... I think MS made the agreement with Nintendo under the agreement that an upgraded Switch was on the way and that's what would be targeted, still a Switch.

No game in 2023 should ship without a 60fps mode. With the hardware we have, there's no excuse. And if it isn't achievable, the game in question is clearly way too ambitious.
@alexlyster3459

I disagree. I think FEW games should ship without, but not none. Starfield would be better at 60FPS obviously, but it's the sort of game I can forgive being at 30.
@izuthree

It depends, if the game is heavily using something like RT as a fundamental, you're unlikely to get a decent 60fps output from the game with how the current consoles aren't enough to bruteforce RT with both framerate and resolution. After all, new hardware unlocks new possibilities which use it, and if you want to fully blast the hardware with everything you can, you're going to hit performance limitations on bespoke current-gen games no matter how fast it is. That said, at the very least a 40fps mode should be in consideration as the midpoint in frametimes, if not 60. Clawing that back should be reasonably possible, and it's a big upgrade over 30, Ratchet and Clank is a good example of it. Only issue with that is support being limited to 120Hz displays.
@steel5897

@@izuthree RT sucks this gen because consoles are using AMD GPUs, on PC with nvidia it's not a problem at all to achieve 60 FPS with DLSS in ray traced titles, even on modest GPUs like a 3070. Either way RT should always be optional, it's not an excuse to not ship with 60 FPS.

@@steel5897 I don't disagree, I have an RTX GPU myself (albeit mostly for DLSS), but there's definitely going to be a push to show off 'new hotness' in things and if you were to want to flex that new tech for something important, you're going to need concessions where it can't be compromised. Something like say, Metro RT edition which -only- supports the RT pipeline. Depressingly, I can't actually think of many examples off the top of my head, since Hitman's functional mirrors were render-to-texture, lol. Hopefully you get the point, though.

Sony didn't partner with Microsoft on MLB the Show they had no choice but to release the game as multiplatform otherwise they would've lost the rights to make the game going forward as MLB wanted more revenue vs PS exclusivity with a contract worth whatever it was. How do you generate more revenue? Going multiplatform and in Microsoft's case partnering with MLB to put it on Game Pass. I'm not to sure Sony is happy about that. Prior to this Call of Duty debacle though they did partner up (Sony) with Microsoft for Azure/Cloud services.

Everyone here smoking a little something. Starfield had a date 11.11.22. Delayed it then and showed it in June saying these games are all coming out in the next 12 months and starfield was one of those games. Idk how Microsoft can be on a roll with having one released game that was in development before Microsoft bought them. Can’t wait for xbox to get credit for Diablo and call of duty.

In regards to the Engine discussion: If a lot of Studios Use the developing company would get a lot of feedback. Let's say downsides of a technology, frequently asked tools etc. It would enable a "engine developing company" to focus on specific improvements which could be a good thing. For example: A better Animation System in Unreal (anyone who prefers to animate in Unreal out there xD?), a native Quest tool, a native Dialogue System etc.
