Dark Forces 2 + Mysteries of the Sith next, then the rogue squadron trilogy and Shadow of the Empire! LET'S GO Nightdive!!! I can't wait for the release ❤❤
@generalcjg
7 ай бұрын
Sadly I believe the Rogue Squadron games will likely be handled by Aspyr Media instead of NightDive Studios. NightDive are the ones that will bring the harder to translate to current platform SW games (Dark Forces, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, and to some extent Shadows of the Empire), while Aspyr Media will do the easier SW games to port (mainly sixth gen SW games like the Battlefront games, the Jedi Knight games, and some fifth gen stuff like Episode I Racer, and the Rogue Squadron trilogy). I do wish NightDive would rerelease all classic SW games as they are the best at what they do, but likely Disney will have Aspyr rerelease a good chunk of them while NightDive does some SW game rereleases.
@AceParty
7 ай бұрын
@@generalcjg Nah, no way Aspyr can deal with the technical aspect of Rogue Leader and Rogue Squadron 3. There are way too complex games even today to just port over. Nightdive would be the only one capable thanks to their Kex engine.
@generalcjg
7 ай бұрын
@AceParty The reason why I said that previous response is because if you look at the track records of both NightDive and Aspyr, you'll see that Nightdive usually focuses on bringing 1990s games (particularly 90s FPSs) to modern Gaming platforms, down to even the most obscure stuff you can think of from that time (like Powerslave Exhumed), and Dark Forces 1 is one such game that fits that criteria of theirs, as well as Dark Forces 2 and Shadows of the Empire, with their one exception of doing a 2000s game being Turok 3 for the N64; while Aspyr has been the one to port plenty of 2000s Star Wars games to modern Gaming platforms (Star Wars Jedi Knight II and Jedi Academy, The Force Unleashed Sixth Gen version, Republic Commando, KOTOR 1-2 Switch ports, and most recently the two Battlefront games), though they do have some exceptions of them porting 90s games with Star Wars Episode I: Racer and Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. Looking at this lineup, as much as I really want NightDive to be the ones to port pretty much all classic SW games from the 90s and 2000s, it just seems that NightDive will handle 90s SW games while Aspyr does all 2000s SW games since they do have their preferred eras of games to work on.

He could just so simply capture a high resolution GZDoom version or even the current Steam Unity version, but nah.. He throw right in your face the original that looks now 10x worse than you remember because we are now all watching this in big flat panels instead of the 14" CRT monitors we all played these games on. It's always fun to remember how these games really looked. I still play Doom often to this day, but I use GZDoom, native 4k, widescreen, higher colour depth etc..

You could have given The Force Engine a bit more credit instead of trying to talk it down. The Dev of TFE helped with this Remaster in a consulting capacity and TFE will also work with the assets of this Remaster later on, so these two things go hand in hand as far as i am concerned. The only thing i truly want from this remaster is good Steam Deck + Controller support, because TFE has yet to work on Steam Deck at all. New graphics and cinematics are just icing on the cake... i usually prefer the original pixel graphics, that is generally where the Nostalgia is... just not like Tomb Raider I-III Remaster did it, i don't want to swap to the OG graphics and then it runs at eye hurting 30 FPS, yikes, can't play like that.

A shame about the Midi Music in the Remaster. However, you aren't getting the "as intended" experience with a Roland SC-55, either. This is one of the few games that was composed with an SC-88. The SC-55 has instrument cut-off issues. This is especially noticeable during the main theme when instruments sound a little more staccato on an SC-55 where the SC-88 flows together better (and sounds fuller as well).

Just been playing this yesterday on the Force engine and my brother and I were both struck with how great the e11 Blaster feels to use. The giant weapon sprite, the dynamic lighting from the muzzle flash, the lit up animation frames of enemies getting hit... Just amazing. The game doesn't hold up as well Doom. The weapon and enemy roster isn't as varied in terms of gameplay. A mixed horde in Doom creates an interesting gameplay scenario where you have to prioritize some enemies and maybe engage them at different ranges, maybe even ideally with different weapons. In Dark Forces, you just shoot at them all for the most part. The level design, while atmospheric, has more emphasis on running around to solve minor puzzles. They're not huge headscratchers but where Doom's key hunts barely slow you down, in Dark Forces you spend more time just searching these large levels, in my experience. Makes it less replayable than Doom. But it's a great game in its own right! The art is really cool and like I said that e11 Blaster... man! Almost worth playing just to get to use that. I wish you would have shown an example of how looking up and down worked in this game prior to the Remaster: It extends the view over the top and bottom of the screen, as if you're still looking straight ahead but your monitor was actually three monitors high. When you look up and down, you basically just scroll this vertically extended image up and down but the rendered angle doesn't change. It's why it looks warped in the original. You're not actually looking up in a 3d sense. Both the Force engine and the Remaster change this to let you look up as in regular 3d games. I wonder if the Remaster has a toggle for the old behavior. Just as a historical curiosity.

It's good to see Nightdive going back to their roots of getting old games that were stranded on ancient systems up and running on modern systems again. I was a little annoyed when they started to remaster games like Doom and Quake, when those games are already open source and perfectly playable on modern systems using any of the dozens of source ports that already exist. I'd rather they focus on games that don't have their source code available, like they've done for Blood and now for Dark Forces, which were unplayable outside of emulation or some half-finished reverse engineering project that kind of, sort of works.

I don't know where this information goes, because you're correct that looking up and down wasn't _really_ seen before. But it had a year earlier with the original Marathon. That game was the first FPS to allow aiming up and down. The crazy thing is that the original Descent had it's shareware release like, a couple days later and that game lets you aim just about all-over-the-place. Although all of these were beaten by dungeon crawler games, Ultima Underworld and such, which deserve a shout-out even though they are not first person shooters.

I'm really loving this recent trend of remasters that most importantly preserve the original games and don't overdue it. Cleaning assets up, fixing performance issues, and QOL improvements are all we need. Everything else should be preserved esthetically and with feel. Dark Forces, Quake II, Tomb Raider, and others have done this so well. I really hope we get to see more remasters like this. And the great thing is these remasters are cheaper to make than full blown remakes that usually disappoint anyway!

That subtle use of the music from Shadows of the Empire... How about that as your next Star Wars venture, Nightdive????

The work Nightdive has done on this game makes me wonder what they could do with both Terminator: Future Shock and Tekwar.

I've been on a Doom kick lately, and I've heard positive things about the original game. So this remaster couldn't have come out at a more perfect time for me.

God I am so excited for this. Nightdive is doing God's work. They've done so much to preserve my favorite games. Extremely thankful for that.

Man this game brings back some memories. Something about it always creeped me out, weirdly enough. Those Dark Troopers popping outnof nowhere probably did it I hope Night Dive works on the original Medal of Honor games, that would be swell

@2:44 Feel like the Bungie game Marathon, should have been included with System shock as that leant heavily on it's story. More so as the trilogy progressed, even if Marathon Infinity was more than slightly convoluted with its story! MandaloreGaming has done a great review of the Marathon series.

Konami should have allowed Nightdive to remaster MGS: Master Collection !!! Than it would be a true MASTERPIECE!!!

Oh dude, you have no idea how much I fully agree with you. Konami really screwed up with the MGS Master Collection.
