I just acquired one of these after a couple of years of using a modded Mazzer Major. It's smaller, quieter, less messy, more adjustable, and more consistent. It's distinctly possible that my Major was just clapped out, but the differences that I've noticed are huge. All of the plastic parts that come with the machine are trash. The dosing cup creates a ridiculous amount of static, and just feels cheep. The hopper was destroyed on arrival, but frankly it doesn't bother me because I'm never going to use it. I did not know there was a metal version of the dosing cup, thank you Sprometheus, I am going to look into acquisition immediately. Using a portafilter with the funnel is fine, but isn't great. Overall, I love this machine, and despite the garbage accessories, it's an excellent grinder. My opinion, for what it's worth. Thanks for the video!

After owning a DF64 for almost a year (and modding it to work), I think the price point is the biggest seller. It’s compatible with 64mm burr upgrades, grinds relatively quickly and with fluffy grinds (needs RDT for me though), and is designed to compete in that entry level market. I’d love to know how well machined the burr carriers are, the original DF64 for me needed shimming and was quite a growing pain for a bit. Also for the rubber, I think most people who do direct to portafilter only use two on the bottom forks (rather than all 4) to prevent them from ripping
@Sprometheus

I definitely am with you on the affordable selling point with a lot of room to grow. In terms of shimming I did have to shim my grinder to get the alignment right, but I feel like that comes from grinders in all price range. Good call on the rubbers, I’ll give that a go.

I'm 2.5 years into owning, and using daily, a Niche Zero. If I could improve anything it would be the coarser grind for filter due to it being a conical grinder. So the DF64P doesn't tempt me since it is espresso only. Also I've had nothing wear out on the NZ, it's in the same state today as the day I got it. The corner cutting with the DF grinders to keep price down just ruins them for me. I'd make the comparison of the NZ to an Apple product, like the iPhone or an iMac. Attention to detail, quality parts and after sales service with product design at the helm of its development. Plenty of "NZ Killers" out there but the NZ is far from dead and has become something of a bench mark which I don't think the "killers" really got or understood why it did so well.

For a lot of burr sets we’ve seen rpm speed not effect the distribution of fines, but rather shift the particle distribution as you would by simply changing your grind setting. As far as we’ve seen so far, low fines producing burrs are least or not at all effected by rpm. Jonathan Gagne along with Lyn Weber have released information on this. Have you experienced a change in flavors or shot times with rpm that you couldn’t get by adjusting grind?
@Sprometheus
2 жыл бұрын
That may very well be the case, but not my experience with the multipurpose SSP burrs. Faster brew times on the same grind size with slower vs faster RPM, which leads me to believing that speed does effect it, at least in this isolated case.

You can go crazy trying to figure out what grinder to buy. The biggest issue I see with the Lagom is that it's not immune to Upgrade-itis. If you're the kind of person willing to spend that much on a grinder, you will probably also look into getting a much more expensive grinder in the future, like a Kafatek or Weber. If that's the case, the it might be worth it to just buy something like the DF64 that you can keep for brewing dark roasts or something.

You absolutely can. Maybe I’m in the minority on this one, but I have tried coffee on grinders twice as expensive and to be honest, they’re fine. @@AnonymousSam Yeah, and maybe that’s the case. But the question is, what is “noticeably better”? And what are you willing to pay for that? @mikni4069

@@AnonymousSam There is a lot of hyperbole in the industry, I’ve been in this for about 12 years now, I owned more grinders then what is probably sane and even more burrs. While +98mm dos produce the best possible coffee short of roller mills it is as he says and as Hoffmann says diminishing returns. Once you aligned a 64mm SSP flat what you gain is nuances. Most that haven’t trained their tasting skills to the level of some of these guys just waste money on these large burrs. I owned a modified EK43 with titus carrier with ssp burrs and aligned to perfection and what not and yes it has better clarity, better flavour separation with similar type burrs or better “sweetness” on other then similar 64mm SSP burrs but you need have them side by side to notice and many would never notice unless they specifically knew what they should be looking for. Yes the clarity can be insane on 98mm with the brew burrs, but could also be on 64mm if burrs where made to resemble that. The cast 64 completely level out the Ditting 80mm burrs and those burrs have a larger surface area then Mazzer 83mm. My point is we cannot surely look at seize, the design of the burrs matters more. Only if burrs are made to deliver approximately the same will bigger deliver better at given aspects but we are talking nuances here. So 64mm just give the by far better value for money.

I think comparison to a grinder three times the price is too far a stretched expectation. At least stock burrs vs stock burrs would be reasonable since I would rather expect the need to upgrade on the cheaper grinder and thereby loosing some of its inexpensiveness. Since I own a 64P, don’t want to miss the “Espresso-only” since it allows very fine adjustment and makes dial in easy. Now paired it with an Ode2 for filter. Since I have doubts on perfect burrs for both styles, a select grinder for each makes a lot sense to me and I would love to see less “All purpose” and more specialty grinders fitted for the purpose.

Quick question, what are you thoughts on filter grind size for the df64 p? Will they still do a decent job? Or are the DF 64 p only for espresso?
@Sprometheus

When I received mine the burrs weren’t close enough to get the fine tune control I wanted from espresso, but it was capable at its coarsest setting to brew a solid Aeropress or Orea V3. So filter coffee can be done with the use of some shims to create a little more space between the burrs, but with the lack of a 360 degree adjustment it’s essentially and either or grinder and won’t do both at the same time

Is this one actually not capable of filter coffee?
@Sprometheus
2 жыл бұрын
It is and it isn’t. So when I got it, the burrs were set in a way where I could brew an Aeropress or an Orea V3 on the coarsest setting, and pull a shot on the finest, but it gave me no room for dialing in. So the lack of full 360 rotations on this one from the original will hold you back from having a true all around grinder.

@@Sprometheus gotcha thanks for clarifying. Seems an odd choice for DF but ok.

I like seeing more affordable options like this. What in your opinion makes this an espresso only grinder?
@Sprometheus

It’s adjustment lever doesn’t allow for a full 360 degree rotation, so it gives you a tighter frame to work within, allowing you to dial in espresso very finely, but not allowing you to make broad brew method adjustments.

why do reviews of single dose grinders almost-never address some of the major things that draw most of us to them? i.e. how does the workflow compare, how easy (or difficult) is it to change grind settings (and return to where you left), how easy is it to live with. These are things most single dosers want to know. These, along with cup quality.

How loud is it compared to the Arco 2in1?

It’s been a minute since I broke out the ARCO, but I’m confident this is quieter as the ARCO has no body and material to dampen it and essentially a drill motor.

I'm not sure you could call this a premium option grinder at this price point. It's more mid-range I would think. $800/1000 is moving into premium territory IMO. I would call it a good value grinder that's competing against some strong competition from a higher price point.

No, it's not an upgrade from the original DF64. It can only grind one brew method for a start.

I wish that was the case, but based on the comments I get when I don’t outwardly disclose that information it doesn’t seem that way. And sometimes, even when I do disclose people accuse me of being bias. There truly is no winning with some.

Sorry to say, but the D64P is not a good grinder. More of a fun killer than a Niche killer. Get it if you love clogging and regrinding.

Have you looked into or heard of the Varia VS3? it’s a really affordable *supposedly* versatile grinder, and I wanted to see if you had any thoughts on it! Great vid

Varia VS3 is a 38mm conical DC grinder. Much slower and louder than the 64mm flat burr DF64. I played with a prototype for few days, it's basicly an electrified hand grinder, nothing more nothing less.
