The de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk, or as I know it, the de Havilland Chipmunk T.10, holds a special place in my heart, as I am sure it does for any ex air training corps cadet who got to hear those magical words, "you have control" from 1958 to 1996. It was in the twilight of her service with the RAF when I was a cadet but I got to have a couple of flights, I lost my log book but I know I definitely had 2 flights. It was my first time flying in a fixed wing aircraft, first time I flew an aircraft and my first experience of aerobatic manoeuvres.
As I have been experimenting with the Sky Dolly app which allows you to record and replay flights adding additional aircraft effectively allowing you to do formation flying, I decided to pay tribute to the Chippy by attempting a formation flight with 5 aircraft each with a different paint job, the lead aircraft is the Chipmunk prototype, the yellow one is a Royal Canadian Air Force example (with bubble canopy) the black Chippy represents one of the Battle of Britain memorial flight aircraft (used for tail wheel training and as an aerial taxi for transporting crew and spare parts) The red and white aircraft is the standard RAF training scheme, that's how I remember them from my cadet days, the silver one with yellow on the wings is a University Air Squadron example.
The airport is Downsview in Toronto, Canada, I chose this location as it is where the Chippy first flew from and my plan is to do another formation flight on the anniversary of the first flight, but, as you will see I, need to get a lot of practice in, I struggled to get into the correct positions for the different formations I wanted to fly, so lots of room for improvement.
The Chipmunk model is from Aeroplane Heaven.
