Good video well explained but my issue with area damage generally is it helps you kill the enemies you have least trouble with. The big enemies and rift guardian are affected less. So the mobs you kill the fastest die slightly faster and those you take a while take even longer through sacrificed stats.

A few comments: 1. the percentage is calculated from as if you have no AD%... this exaggerates its usefulness. In fact everyone comes with 50% ad in paragon so the net effectiveness have to be divided by 1.5. For example, if you are thinking about whether you take 20% elemental or 20% AD on the amulet, assume you have 20% +elemental on bracer and no extra AD% outside paragon, then you actually need to consistently have 5*(1.5/1.2)+1=7.25 enemies in the 10-yard circle for it to be worth it. And each additional AD% affix you have get progressively worse. 2. Therefore I think it is probably sufficient to get 2 AD affixes from shoulder and weapon probably. This is because cdr, chc, chd do not get progressively worse. cdr is multiplicative with each other where as chd and chc even though add with themselves but they are multiplicative to each other. AD% and +elemental% are strictly additive.

Good guide in general, but the number 6 isn't particularly relevant; it's just the point at which 1% area damage becomes equal with 1% direct increase in damage from any other skill - basically because you get an average of one proc every 5 attacks, you need 5 targets hit with area damage per proc to equal the damage gain. You said this in a roundabout way, but I think that people who don't understand the relevance of 6 enemies might overvalue the importance of the number (and hence over or, more often undervalue the stat based on the number 6). Whether or not it is actually equal with another stat depends on how much of each stat you gain in that slot in comparison to area damage, specifically how many monsters, and so on. Area damage is also far, far higher in variance than any other stat (sometimes you get 10 procs in a row, sometimes you get no procs in 10 attacks), and the variance doesn't decrease with increase in the stat like crit chance does - it's always going to be a 20% chance to have any effect at all. In general I think an increase in variance is usually a bad thing for consistency in clear speed, but area damage has the potential to be so ridiculously overpowered when it does proc that I think it's a worthwhile chance to take usually.

So, if your initial attack hits multiple targets, all of those initial hits cause separate area damage for all targets (assuming all hits produce area damage)? That's ridiculous. I did not know that is how the mechanic worked. I thought area damage was just how much extra damage is applied to a single attack that hit more than one target.

Quin, how does this go with the karleis point/HPS combination? Does AD proc on EACH monster hit by each of the 3 daggers, or only once per throw (where the 3 daggers are considered one throw)? (we're talking about the lightning rune for impale here of course, and lightning elemental dmg of course). I'd only have AD from paragons and weapon, so it'd be 74%. I could re-roll vitality on shoulders to AD too, for an additional 20%, for a total of 94%, but that would leave me around 5k vitality and a bit fragile. I also have a weapon with 5% IAS...that I can use. I'm holding off atm, trying to figure out which way would be better (I have 20% IAS on HPS quiver and max in paragon too). When I look at d3planner, the 5% IAS weapon brings me to FPA 25 for a 3.8% DPS buff over my current weapon. d3planner doesn't seem to show the damage buff for AD in either sim or elemental DPS and I can't see anywhere where I've possible missed ticking a checkbox etc to include AD calcs... help!

I believe 10 monsters would give more then 248% dmg increase. 248% is only from a single hit that proced AD. But in reality, if I hit a pack of 10 monsters with let's say dashing strike, DS will hit all 10 mobs and as I understand, every seperate monster might proc AD of that single DS? So 10 mobs might trigger like 2-3 ADs of a single DS.

very pretty numbers, nothing new there we didnt already knew. but in practice 10y isnt easy for all to achieve. not to mention they are harder to keep in place due to cc changes. AD still crap, 10y isnt good at all, not procing from lots of things isnt good as u cant use it with all builds. so you have the best dmg increase in game IF you have 6 targets MINIMUM, IF they are 10y from each other, and IF you are not using a build that uses legendary stuff that doesnt proc area damage. this are ALOT of IF's no?

I like the guide, but RNG is still RNG; what you're listing is the averages for damage increases, which may or may not be experienced by players. Some players may get next to no procs of AD at all with only a 20% chance per hit, while some other players may get AD procs on every single monster they hit. This one single factor is why most players prefer the reliability of the elemental damage, CDR, and other various stats that you can pick up instead. Don't get me wrong, picking up AD with Paragon points is a solid investment, but going out of your way to try and stack some and then fishing for a perfect rift where you MAY get a good chain of procs to clear quickly is unreliable at best. If Blizzard added in something to increase your actual chance to proc AD and not just increase the damage of it, then it could probably be a much more reliable and versatile stat, but until they do it's still a roll of the dice at best and hoping you get lucky for most classes.
@Cronovey
9 жыл бұрын
***** Don't get me wrong, I understand that, but there's still the potential to get a nasty dry spell and end up actually losing time in a rift compared to the potential time gained, especially if you don't get the perfect rift that has a bunch of close together stacked up mobs. While I appreciate the thought and "math" put into this, it's still not a realistic representation of how it works in practice. It's still going to be less consistent than a normal build utilizing percent damage increases and lowered cooldowns, and the aim for most players looking to steadily climb is going to be consistency. You also have to factor in the loss of other stats that may be much bigger DPS gains overall (varying by class) such as crit, crit damage, or cooldown reduction that are instead rolled into Area Damage instead, so the numbers are slightly misleading in the actual damage increase even if the math WAS good and not RNG based, just due to the loss of other stats that can be very impactful. I still like the video and I like the theorycrafting behind it because there aren't a ton of people doing work like this outside of "use these items to win!" so it's cool to someone trying to optimize outside of just listing items to use, I just think it's a bit unrealistic in the numbers given.
@randomguy00039
9 жыл бұрын
+Cronovey The thing is, area damage bonuses are exactly the same rng as crit chance and crit damage values, and thus the exact same arguments you made about area damage being unpredictable and unreliable can be made about crit damage, yet if one tries to build without any crit damage or crit chance, one will find themselves completely unable to do any reasonable sort of damage.
@Cronovey
9 жыл бұрын
+randomguy000039 Except that, as I pointed out, he was saying to go about getting these by dropping things like percent damage increases as well, which are static increases. There are also items that give guaranteed criticals or skills that can do the same, and you can increase your chance to crit, making crit damage a much more reliable stat than Area Damage, which is always going to be a flat 20% chance no matter what. The point I was trying to make is that becoming even MORE reliant on good RNG in a game where RNG already determines nearly everything (loot, rift density, etc) means that it's that much harder for the stars to align and get you the drops you need, the dream rift you need, and the lucky RNG procs to clear faster than before. Every bit of RNG you add in a different variable makes it that much harder to consistently clear higher rifts, and it generally works better to try and keep as much consistency as possible if you're looking to farm higher level GRifts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be all "Oh, that's got area damage, not gonna use it" when I see an item with it, but I'm also not going to go out of my way to get an inconsistent stat when I could use something more static.
@nicoinformatics
9 жыл бұрын
+Quin C (Quin69) I think what +Cronovey was trying to say, and I agree with him here, you talked as if AD is the "best" stat there is even when putting into account Ele and CHD multipliers, it's not. For example, a 20% of X elemental damage with a skill using that X element is always without exception be better than a 20% AD increase in gear, due to the sole fact that ele damage is on it's own multiplier shared only with pet dmg multiplier so that a 20% increase on ele dmg is always the same as 20% increase in AD, regardless of how many mobs there are. The only argument which can be made in which AD can be better than say, ele damage increase is when the damage source is not in the same element as the ele dmg bonus or when you're comparing a character with 0 AD + 20 Ele vs 20 AD + 0 Ele, in which case the 20 AD is better. So as long as you have AD above 0%, most other damage multiplier on gear is almost always be better than raw AD stat, the only exception to this is probably class A buffs (self buff towards character dps from talents/skills, debuffs like strongarms, or direct skill dmg bonuses).
@nicoinformatics
9 жыл бұрын
+randomguy000039 No they're not. If you've ever learned probability and statistics you'd easily come to realize that AD and crits are completely different in the final chance of occurrence when it comes to actual damage application. Basically a 50% chance to crit means that you'd crit roughly half of the time depending on sample size, or on layman's term, you either crit or you don't, a 20% chance to proc AD could mean three things, that you'd have 10% chance of that AD applied as that crit damage times the area damage multiplier, 10% chance that you deal AD without the crit damage applied, and 80% chance it doesn't do anything. So you're comparing a best case scenario of crit occurring of 50% with 10% from AD. See the difference?

+Ca11mero It doesnt have to be big billion crits. Orange damage is the Top 5% crits (iirc) you have pulled in the past 5 seconds. So you will sometimes see that if you hit for 35 billion once, then 29 billion next hit, only the 35 billion will show up as orange, the 29 billion as yellow. This also works on lower numbers, replace the billion with million and you get the same result. -Edit: Blizzard has a page up on "re-engineering combat numbers" when diablo 3 is selected on battle net. @borken87
9 жыл бұрын
I see some problems with your arguments: 1, To get a lot of enemies on a 10 yard area you need a really really good rift AND it has to be melee monsters. Ranged monsters noramlly split and then you wont get that many togehter. Maybe its really good when fishing for grifts to climb the ladder but for nomral speedfarms or save gem upgrading runs i dont think its worth it. In those really good grifts you dont really need it and it will only make you fail those with more spread monsters. 2. Doing the Math isnt that easy either. When you calculate dmg increase via rolls on Shoulds, Gloves, Weapons, Then you are going to miss others stats on those. Maybe on shoulders if you take area dmg istead of a defensive stat you can calculate those in, however on weapons and gloves you would loose another dmgageamplifying stat like cc, cd, agi, attackspeed, or the CDR that just is really imporant for some builts to even work. So your maindmg gets decreased, thus decreasing your overalldmg in comparison to not running area dmg for those other rolls when you have less than 6 monsters in the 10yard radius. So your calculations only whoe the dmg increase that you would get IF you would get those areadmg rolls for free. You should maybe do the math on stuff like "how is the damage done changed when you take area dmg instead of critdmg(etc) on gloves, how does the damage DECREASE for less than x monsters." The damage decrease is very imporant too i think to see if it really is worth in overalldmg. When you fight packs, at least the ast yellow dude will normally be alone, riftguardians are alone and as mentioned before in rifts with monsters that are spreading you often only have 1-3 monsters in a 10 yard radius of each other even with pretty high density. I think especially for Ulianas you need lots of CDR rolls, you need at lease some defensive rolls, so you dont die between sevensidedstrikes and i would prefer to take rolls that always are good and not only in certain situations. However as I wrote in 1. i think it might be viable to use if you are fishing for certain higher grifts to climb the ladder. Then you would skip those grifts, where the area dmg would be as profitable.

But if i get the items, that my chain lightning can hit targets more then once AND the item that givves 10 more bounces, it will check each enemy 18 times [If all enemys stay alive AND stay close to each other] since, it modifies my normal attack. 'probably not on rings' um why not? CC,CD,AD, socket. AD will kick the crap out of main stat / 100-200 dmg. Amulet is unrealistic though. This does benefit classes that pull in enemies, EG sweeping wind monks can probably pull in 30+ enemies quite often. they really don't need to be in your 10 yard radius either because like you've stated it's 10 yards around the enemy that procs AD so in that sense it can keep spreading to the other mobs that are maybe 30 yards away from you. I heard AD does not work on EP though, was this fixed with 2.3 PTR?

Let's also say that the line procs 5 times in the DOT, so if I had 0% area damage, they would each take 100 dmg 5 times or 500dmg each. But with 100% area damage, each of the procs would deal 100 damage to EACH guy AND the 4 around him, so that each person takes 500 PER proc for a total of 2.5k PER person? If so I'm going roll crit dmg off all all my helltooth set for AD and maybe even focus restraint... that is, until I find a the perfect balance between crit dmg and AD.

You said it yourself, what limits AD is the 10 yards radius. Contrary to what you said, I think 10 mobs on average is being very generous, maybe not for a monk because monks can pull thus clustering them.. I'd say that for builds that can't cluster mobs AD is inferior to EHP. But for glass cannon types, AD is still damage, and more damage no matter how small it is, will always be better.

The one real question I have is what classes does this actually effect? Barbs DPS comes from set bonuses, Nat's DH is CR, Monks is set bonuses. WD pet build gonna become OP? What builds can support AD as a viable stat weight?

They completely botched Yards in D3 though. 1 yard is 0,91 meters (or 3 feet ). The socalled 10 yard radius at 7:50 would be, in real life, be almost 10 meters (30 feet). Unless D3 characters are really big!

Ok. Since AD inception I have always read that it was terrible. Useless. Never really worried with testing it for myself in the field because that's not effective. So.. now I hear Quin say best stat in game. I am so conflicted ;)

Thanks for the guide! 1 Question, there are skills in the game which indicates area effect dmg such as WD Confident passive, so the question is the following: Is there a grapic or addon help that can give me some aid about where exactly the end of that 25y ends? It could be useful to see where the edges goes around me when i'am in the middle of the fight. I could re-arrange my position to stay in the middle of the fight so my enemies technically would surround me efficiently. Thanks in advance.

Quin, I think your model is slightly off and over-inflates the value of AD. I am not trying to deny that the stat is good, just trying to see if your model is flawed. I think the big flaw in your rationale is considering scenarios where multiple enemies are hit and then trying to pass that off as a "Damage Increase". Like any AOE attribute, the more monsters you hit, obviously the more total damage you will do, but the damage you do to a single monster will remain the same. You really should only consider the damage that AD does to a single target. By adding the number of enemies portion of your calculation you are double/triple/quadruple/etc. dipping for each additional monster hit. I.E. you are showing cumulative damage gains per target hit for a single application of the aoe portion of the ability. They only real way to get a bigger "Damage Increase" is to get more Area Damage, not hit more enemies. I welcome your comments, and appreciate the explanation. I just feel the model is off, not the math, because it really is quite simple.

I wonder how Monk is going to fit this stat in, rolling a Monk automatically means 1 less stat choice on gear ala CDR-dependency issues for survability aka Epiphany.

to all my fellow hammer of the ancients barbarians out there - "in our case" area damage doesn't seem to work with bracers of the first men and the focus set ring. I think it's not working with the IK damage buff for us either. Think this won't be fixed anytime soon. The conclusion? battlerage bloodshed as usual and area damage from paragon points, skip anything on gear and go for flat damage or survivability.

Great video. I would like to ask you, does the area damage works if you cast meteor shower while using Etched sigil (wizard off hand weapon) ? I mean the auto casting from this legendary item. Thank you in advanced.

Why the preference of Paint over Google's versions of Powerpoint? You're familiar with Sheets, so that shouldn't be such issue :)

I've been hearing that area damage both causes lag in multiplayer games and also doesn't work correctly for some reason. Can you tell me if the former is still the case or is area damage still a really good stat for AoE? As another aside, do you know a good formula, website, or way to calculate the relative value of stats (Primary, crit chance, crit damage, etc) without simply relying on the in game sheet? Thanks!

I dont get what "AD doesnt proc from legendary items.." means. Because everyone is using legendary weapons AD would be useless to everyone. Or does it not proc from damage the brown special feature of a legendary makes?

Can't find info regarding f/r and tal'rasha's interaction with area damage. Some people say area damage doesn't work with multipliers, rendering it useless on builds that rely on multipliers like del'rasha wizard, any info?

Is there any internal cooldown to how often you proc AD? Because if you're using a build that has more that 5 APS then you can pretty much spec into single target damage and match that damage in a 10 yard radius. Any limit to that?

Would there be any point for an Archon wizzard to get a tiny bit of AD on say shoulders. I know the chantodo proc will not affect AD, but the left or rightclick will proc AD in Archon form right?

You would never drop elemental damage on a piece of gear in exchance for AD though, right? If the elemental damage % is increasing the base dmg number for AD to scale off, we still want that base damage number as high as we can get it, right?
