I got this amp a bit over a year ago and it's my favorite amp but not my "main" amp simply because of how loud it is. But man every once in a while I get it out, hook it up through a load box and my interface to tame the volume and I load up a speaker IR and think "wow this doesn't sound as good as I remember" (my cat has a habit of turning knobs on amps that she can reach so settings are never the same when I get it back out). So I pull up this video and re-learn how to dial it in and immediately remember why it's my favorite amp even if it isn't my main one hahaha. Thanks for the super easy to follow but detailed tone shaping lesson for this wonderful amp!

The Presence knob is the secret "boost" on most Marshalls that people often overlook. It feels like it brings out more gain, and "excitement" from the amp the higher it is. I would always recommend people (again, specific to Marshalls/clones) have the presence high, or maxed, and have the treble low or off, and work from there vs. the opposite of that. Presence high lets the amp breathe, low chokes it.

What are you doing to get that sound? Much of what is going on with the tones in this demo is not from the amp. My guess is it's a load box with IRs and reverbs and stuff added after the IRs. I ask because getting a tone like this using a load, DAW and IRs is not straight forward. I am fairly new to it and am still working out how to use IRs and whatever delay and reverb you have going on that is giving your tones all that extra juiciness etc. What's more, somebody with an amp and cab is not going to get these tones using the settings you suggest, due to all you have going on after the amp. Cheers.

Thanks for the tone demo...One thing I think would add greatly to this tutorial is to roll the guitar volume knob down to 7/8 for lead and 3/4 for cleaner rhythm in your demo. This is the way it's done for recording and playing out live from my experience. Adding a fuzz face into the equation and turning it on and off for Rhythm and lead would emulate real life live stage use. I've been thinking of getting this amp after selling my Sovtek 100 watt amp because it weighed way too much and didn't have the tone I wanted...This Marshall amp seems to fit the bill pretty good...

I have one clean tone is amazing, with alittke help from some reverb! To get it, jump the channels, turn normal channels to about 10-11 o'clock, and have the high treble channel barely on. The tone stack is passive so more you turn to the right the more gain you will have unless you have them all on 10 you should be getting a clean tone if you've done the first step.

I love this amp however it is a beast even on the 5 W mode. I truly can hardly tell the difference. I also have the silver jubilee with the master volume. It certainly makes it much more tamed or tame all lol but when you get this cranked through an oversize 212 it really rocks and sounds fantastic. Everything turned to 10 bought a sheriff 22 from victory used just to use the vintage plexi channel much more controllable and there are certainly other options out there. That was just my route to go, but I do love this head 2:36

Sounds great, Paul! Hope you are well mate. I use the UAD Plexi plugin and found I really like telecaster tone going through top left input with volume around 7-8. I like to cut some of the mids and tweak bass, treble, and presence to taste. It's a beautiful sound, really starts compressing in a musical way and feels great to play. If you pick lightly you get a nice "clean" tone and likewise dig in for the dirt.

Having all of the tone controls set at noon doesn't really make the EQ flat. It isn't a Baxandall-style of tone stack that boosts and cuts frequencies and is flat when set to the middle position. In a typical Marshall tone stack, there is always some degree of mid-scoop present and bass roll-off with the controls set like this i.e. all at noon. Having the Bass and Treble controls turned all the way down and the Middle control dimed provides a better representation of a flat EQ in my opinion.

I really want to buy a good plexi amp (as all of my amps are modded versions of a Marshall) but wouldn't mind paying the extra £ and going for a 50 watt amp, if the new 20 watt amp doesn't really cut it tonally.

Fantastic video and playing! I just got the amp myself! Just have a question - what is the signal chain enabling you to add reverb?
