Make sure you check out the bonus debrief at the end of the video discussing the logistics of cross border operations between the US and Canada!
In August, my daughter and I decided to fly up to Victoria BC for a day flight. She is interested in the University of Victoria and wanted to check out the campus. We also had some family visiting later in the month and they were hoping to visit Victoria, so we thought a practice run would make sense.
Victoria BC is a gorgeous city only 30-40 minute by plane from Seattle. It has a very European vibe with a beautiful downtown area.
Flying from the US to Canada in a private plane is very practical but requires a lot more up-front planning than a typical cross-country. There are some excellent resources available on-line detailing what is required but I thought folks would find it interesting to see how the process actually works.
It is important to fly into an Airport of Entry (AoE) to clear customs both when flying into Canada and when flying back to the US. Victoria BC is an AoE so that’s easy but my home airport of Renton is not an AoE. So I need to pick another US AoE when returning to the US. There are several AoE’s in Washington state. I picked Bellingham (KBLI) since I am familiar with it and it is only a short flight from Victoria BC.
If you are interested, make sure to watch my briefing on cross border operations at the end of the video. Note this is meant to provide a feel for a real-world, cross-border flight, NOT to replace training available on-line. Here are a couple of excellent resources I have used:
