Knew an old fellow who produced a few dozen diamond willow walking sticks per year. Yearly, he would visit the sandbars along the river to cut a fresh batch of canes. He buried them in the sand above the waterline, in the hole where he had dug up the previous season’s bundle. The carpenter ants did all the work of carving his sticks. Also, the sun baked sand leeched away whatever moisture that they contained.

You went a little deep on some of those diamonds, IMO. I think you have better color if you leave more of the (nearly) top surface, but the end result was still very good. I'm jealous of your tools :)

So cool Drew ! I didn't expect it to be that awesome ! And a pickaroon ? Who'd'a thunk of that for a cane handle 👍 Nice story of your Grandpa too. Thanks for sharing🙏 Take care. -Mike😷

Thank you! I was surprised as well when I added the finish! Looking forward to the next one…maybe a taller walking stick or a “Wizard Staff”!

Turned out really nice! I wish we had diamond willow here in Maine. I've been wanting to try it but I guess the fungus which causes it isn't around here.

@@bill40bates that's what he did while we worked for him putting up grain bins in the summer. Not sure if 10 year-olds should be building grain bins, but seems a lot of kids did that as a summer job.
