She could have easily competed and been amongst the best in the world from what I see here. Her skills were on par with Mary Lou and the other big names of the time. Gymnastics is an amazing but brutal sport. Only real fans like you get it.

There was some politics involved too . The federation could have let her go to camp being she was the defending National champ . There was jealousy towards Karolyi and he had no allies at the time . Durham you are a legend ! ❤️

So shameful and sad. So much talent and one injury halts your goals and dreams. Rest in Glory, Diane. You left your mark through the beauty of your Artistry. 🙏🏼.

Definitely a trailblazer. She was my gymnastics idol in the 80's and was the reason I attempted to try gymnastics myself. There weren't any our skin color making it big back then. Thank you Diane for giving me courage. I have carried that with me all my life. We can succeed!!! RIP beautiful angel. We love you and we miss you ❤❤❤

I learned VERY recently that Luci Collins was the first Black senior elite gymnast in the US. She made the 1980 Olympic team! But Diane is the first Black national champion, 2nd Black gymnast!

Thank you for posting. I wondered what happened to her. SO much talent and potential. Now I'll have to look up what happened to Shushunova (from the comments below ) Elena Shushunova passed in 2018 from complications with Pneumonia . She was more warm and kind than people knew. Always will be appreciated Thanks Gymnastly.

I agree! It’s not right. Not her fault that she suffered from a broken ankle. One shouldn’t be punished for something out of their control. She should’ve been allowed to participate in the Olympics that year, and I bet she would have one the Gold!

Beautiful video 💗 just an FYI race is meant to be capitalized. So she would be “the first Black gymnast” for example.

@Willie Gordon Did you miss the part where 8 months ago I indicated RACE is meant to be capitalized. Never did I say one race is meant to be capitalized. Just because you don’t capitalize White when referring to race doesn’t mean that is the grammatically correct rule. I capitalize every race because they are all important and deserve that respect, and I will continue to do so. The creator did not have an issue with my sharing that I formation so I’m not sure why you’re here 8 months later trying to bait me into saying something you clearly, purposely misinterpreted.
