Rule book is clunky because of how it’s setup but we are really looking forward to playing to today.

@@DiceandDragons is it on Batman gccc level of clunkiness?

No there is a combined rulebook out there and one thing is counterintuitive and poorly explained which is the placement of aliens before you explore the complex other than that it’s okay

The manufacturer's website says it's for 1-4 players, not 2-4 players.

The instructions for when you get started have rules for 2 and 3 not 1. The game can definitely be played solo though the 4 part rulebook really doesn’t help that.

Yes the game is pretty new (a month old), but come on there are barely a few videos of it on youtube. My copy is traveling to me right now. But I already learned the rules and I would like to watch more playthroughs. At this point there is only one playthrough (on the small new "She Hates Games" channel). One BGG interview with the developers (UpperDeck) explaining the rules on the BGG channel. And some unboxing videos. I am looking forward for your playthrough, Jason. For people who are not familiar with the rules yet I will mention some of the main pillars: The dice (30 of them) are actually representing the Aliens. Each of them have 4 blanks, which are actually your successful shots (so 66% chance to kill an Alien). The Bite symbol is a miss for you and the Alien is attacking you. The Scratch marker is a miss for you but the Alien is not attacking you. So 33% chance to miss and 16% chance to be attacked by an Alien. But that's only on your attack move. And the Aliens have their own moves (from time to time, depending on the Hive Track) when they automatically attack (and don't miss) marines in the same tiles as them. The tracker (radar) is representing the spawns (random drawing the tracker cards, so random spawns). As for the Marine miniatures (models). They are no necessary specific character. The models just represent a squad (each squad consist of 3 marines). But the characters are cards and they are more than those 4 models as we can see in this video. Every character have some different stats and one passive ability. And there are grunts without abilities. Usually the game should be played as every squad of 3 marines is consisting of only 1 character and 2 grunts and the optional "easy mode" is with 2 characters and 1 grunt. But since the characters are 12 and the squads are 4 we can easily use all the characters to fill our squads if we find the game too hard for our liking. The tiles are exactly 30 because the playing area is limited to 5 rows (corridors called Sectors) which are 6 columns deep. There are 9 tiles with objective marker for 3 missions with 3 marks each. The tiles are revealed randomly when you explore the complex. When you find a tile with an objective token you can take that token and put it on one of your missions of your choice. Every mission gives you different bonus activation (3 per mission, so 9 overall), like healing 2 wounds on a marine, activating a Squad additional time, skipping a Xenomorph phase, etc. Really helpful activations, but only 3 per type (on each mission card). The missions are 3 per game, but they are more then 3 types of missions (we can see 15 in this video) so you can draw random missions each time or choose your favorites (based on their bonuses). The goal of the game is to complete all 3 missions (meaning to find all 9 objectives tokens - 3 tokens for all 3 missions) and then extract at the APC. Every squad have 3 Activation Cards (turns) shuffled with the Aliens Activation Cards. On Every activation a Marine Squad have 3 movement points that can be used on revealed tiles but if you explore a new tile your movement stops there (even if you just did 1 movement). Additionally the tiles have some of their sides occupied with some barricades. If you move from one tile to another through a barricade you waste 2 movement points instead of 1. Also you cannot shoot through a barricade. But you can use a Breach Action to clear the barricades permanently (you use a token on top of the tiles indicating it's breached). So breaching barricades takes time (one full squad activation) and time is very important (I will explain why in the next paragraph) but in the same time if you don't breach your movement around the complex will be slowed. And you will not be able to shoot Aliens through the barricades, however Aliens will be able to jump to your tile through the barricades. So you gotta find the right amount and the best path of breaching. The game starts slow and easy with the Hive Track moving up and on certain spots there is a Xenomorph Phase (when they attack and new spawn). Then every time the Hive Track hits its maximum it resets while adding an additional Alien Activation Card. Which means the Hive Track starts moving more often i.e. faster. And on the maximum resets again and is adding another Alien Activation Card, which makes the Hive Track even faster and faster and the Xenomorph Phases are coming more often. So if you are wasting time you will be overrun. You need to find those objectives fast and escape. Now good balance is achieved by making the Aliens actually running to the "exit" so not all the Aliens are chasing the Marines. Only Aliens on adjacent tiles are choosing to move particularly towards a Marine Squad. All other Aliens are just trying to run to the exit of the complex (not running from you really - they just search to wreck havoc on the civilians out there). That means you can let some Aliens go away so you can avoid fighting them, but ultimately if all Aliens (the 30 dice) are in play (and some of them escaped and are discarded) and another Alien needs to be spawned (but you don't have any available) you lose the game immediately. So you need to kill some of the Aliens to put their dice back to the alien spawn poll. One of the most clever and exciting ideas is the wound system. Maybe it was used before (tell us if you met it before and where), but for me it's new and very cool . So every Marine have certain Armor Value (i.e. health). Lets say 4 (most of them are at 4). On every Alien attack this Marine is taking a wound token. But the wound tokens have 2 different sides. So you only watch 1 of the sides. So when you take 4 wounds its your limit but you are still not dead. Now on the next Alien attack you are not taking additional wound but you are flipping one of your 4 wound tokens on its opposite side. And there you can have a white blank which means you continue to live and fight (essentially taking an additional bonus wound). Or you can have a K.I.A. sign which means you die immediately. That means you can potentially have the super luck and instead of surviving 4 wound you can survive 8 wounds. Or you can just be Killed in Action right on your 5th wound. That makes it very exciting and it's a strong PushYourLuck™ mechanic. The game looks very good and thematic. And it's a great board experience for Aliens fans. I can't wait for your playthrough video, Jason. And for my copy delivery of course. I think I will play this game a lot. But also I will watch every video I could find.

Well thanks for the detailed post about the game and letting us know that your looking forward to our review video. Not sure if we will be doing a full playthrough of the game but definitely a partial one as we go over the rules. If it goes well we will look at expanding the partial one to a full one as a separate video. The review will be coming out on Thursday. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on our review.
