Saw Sir Geoffrey play in a charity game at a local cricket club...got out caught to a young bowler when on 14...just walked , no W.G Grace pomposity . Almost certainly a giveaway for the lad . Impressed me greatly . Or maybe he was "caught short " after too many cups of tea ....the Yorkshireman's Yorkshireman .

I attended one of Dickie Bird's book launches in Sydney a decade or so ago. Very entertaining, particularly his comments on Boycott.

Throw in Alan Border, Steve Waugh and that bloke from South Africa who batted for 2+ days to save a test match (Gary Kirsten?). Cheers from Melbourne, Australia (I know a thing or two about perseverance - a bus driver in a low socioeconomic area, working for a company owned by 3 lawyers. BUT I've watched a test match in the West Indies and Sri Lanka (drinking with the 'Barmy Army' - 2012). Cheers🍺

Boycott had one redeeming quality; he was difficult to get out. His run rate wasn’t good enough to win a test match, but he could save one and force a draw. He has an inflated opinion of himself.

England won loads of test matches due to his stoic batting - but hey, let's not let the facts get in the way of your prejudice.

Boycott didn't get where he is by being half out of bed. He looked at that bed, and he got as far away from it as possible.

Yeah it was at the Semi Final at Headlingley South Africa V The Aussies. In the pavilion, these kids just asked him and he went beserk, saying that he was no going to do it etc real hissy fit. He and Boycott are what I call professional Yorkshiremen (think its OK to be rude to others 'cause their from Yorkshire. most are not like that (i'm from Sheffield) but they play up to a reputation in public. People like bird on TV he craps on about his MBE and all the so called charity work he does

Dickie Bird went out to umpire with Bill Budd at Trent Bridge for the 1st Test England v West Indies, in 1976. I remember Brearley and Edrich asking for bad light, they got it and trudged off quick march!

I met Geoff after a one day international at Headingley a couple of years ago. I'd been working on the first aid team and he made a point of thanking us for turning out, knowing we were all volunteers. He didn't leave until every one, including the kids, had all the photos and autographs they wanted.
