I could be wrong about this, but I think the music industry does this for money making purposes. Recently, I've been seeing vocal coach advertisements that say something to the effect of "Make magic with your voice." If that doesn't say that one's voice could "make magic" via the application of pitch correction and/or auto tune, then I don't know what does. I think there are investments in those applications, but again, I could be wrong.

Excellent comment and my thoughts exactly! The sad part is that, even if the pitch-corrected performance sounds amazing, we are still being deprived of a natural voice that might be even more amazing to our ears - specifically if we are talking about a GREAT singer's natural voice being pitch-corrected or autotuned, at a live performance or on a recording. It's the idea that the music industry standard of using pitch "correction" on all singers' voices, great singers and lesser singers, is tantamount to telling real music lovers that we are NOT ALLOWED any longer to hear a great, naturally pitch-accurate singer's voice with all of the attendant artistic expression, personality and emotional storytelling capacity of a natural human singing voice, particularly when it comes to great singers from decades ago.

@@elizabethmiller7291 Been a while since I bought arena tickets but I'm pretty sure there was a disclaimer in the fine print that portions may be pre-recorded back then and expect even more likely now. Microphone effects are so common I don't think any disclosure is even needed. I don't think there needs to be any standard rule, as there are different expectations for different acts. Jeff Beck and the Grateful Dead were built on improv, so pre-recorded material just wouldn't fit, whereas for a dance pop act I would hate for actual singing to get in the way of the spectacle. Of the popular music genres, only rock really privileges "authenticity" and "genuineness", but in a post-rock era I'm not sure how much that matters anymore.

This poor kid. If she is never told the truth she's going to want to chase the perfection from her childhood, that never was. And for what? So Simon can make more money? It's really unfair.

Initially i thought the girl was flat...on the lower notes. Technically no, but spiritually yes. Taking the emotion out of the singing, whilst it may be pitch correct, makes it flat. Like a robot. Sad for someone so young. I hope she learns expression rather than accuracy

Well sure… it’s about impossible for really young children to have true emotion in their singing, even if their voices are sublime. The best they can do is mimic someone else’s or be over dramatic. But this is because they are children.

I call those that hit the notes but miss the feeling as singing straight. Feeling in the song is suppose to not hit the notes in a purposefully way.

Once again we see reality shows are anything but reality. How is this not exploitation? Building up this child's expectations by using fakery.

How can anyone compare this OR Whitney to the brilliant performance by Randy Watson and his band Sexual Chocolate? Which, by the way, was not pitch corrected.

hi Fil! first of all huge props to you for showing up at Xfactor (or whatever) and being very rock'n'roll. ;-) i like your videos and i watch them a lot. there's one thing that i'd be very interested in: a round of in-depth analysis of the software you use. for example when extracting vocals, esp. from a live concert recording, and running it though the frequency analyzer, there just has to be a certain amount of blur. some frequencies of the environment will match the voice's frequencies, there's reverb created by the location, etc. - it's like one of those AI videos where the face wobbles around weirdly. or, you mentioned the doppler effect. stuff like this. sound compression (mp3, ac3, ...) adds another layer of abstraction, and quantization. it would be really interesting to see the entire chain of production and multiple reproductions laid out and analyzed, step by step, and see what the frequency analyzer actually receives. for example, maybe try extracting vocals from a direct recording of some music, and from a recording of the same music played outdoors with traffic noise, and compare the results. or, maybe if somehow possible, compare a 96khz raw capture of an individual old analog vocal track to the vocals extracted from the mixdown on the album, as available on KZitem. best regards! "More accurate" never equates to "sounds better"!! Actually, I would love for Fil to do a video on the elements that make a voice "sound great" (if he has not already.) To me, one of the essential elements of a great sound is uniqueness, when with just a couple of notes, you can tell who is singing. Think Johnny Mathis - one note and you know it's him.

Accuracy in singing is not important (unless somebody is too far off). Nobody should ever use pitch correction. Fil is one of the few people that fights against this trend, and he IS right.

Thank you for this analysis Fil. I’m very saddened to learn just how common auto-tuning is in the music business. I don’t watch those audition shows but I definitely feel participants, especially children, should not have their performances auto-tuned. Thanks for the work you do in exposing this fraud.

I think there is a chance that Three Days Grace frontman Matt Walst is using pitch correction live, it's most noticeable in the two performances last year where he shared the stage with his predecessor (and now co-frontman as he has officially rejoined) Adam Gontier, who I do not believe used any live pitch correction at those shows. Would be great to hear your thoughts/analysis to see whether I'm right.

One adjustment to your analysis: Whitney didn’t “try to hit” & “miss” a damned thing. She’s SINGING. She’s bending notes, adjusting note values to express emotion. The little girl’s performance was a stilted, manufactured vocal. As you point out, it robs her of expression and replaces it with the output of an audio engineer & a piece of software. So, fine, I mostly agree with your point, but not the notion that the girl is “singing better” in any way , shape, or form.

I was about to ask you to analyse The Voice as I believe that both contestants and judges are both being pitch corrected. Obviously the judges will be aware of this so those apparently impromptu songs are really just fake.

more accurate < > sounds better. Total shame anyone pitch corrected a vocal talent contest entry. The entire point of it is to see how good someone is at singing a song. To later pitch correct it for TV or upload is just unethical, imo. This isn't an established band doing a video to promote their tune. It's a competition. So, no pitch correction should be happening - period. She's doing okay with the song and it would be nice to hear what she actually sounded like. I mean, if her pitch was just a tad off, okay, she's a kid. A youngster. She'll get better. Why lie about it by messing with her pitch after the fact? Another reason I hate these kinds of shows. They are fake reality TV.

Makes me curious Fil--did X Factor pitch correct your audition from 10ish years ago? Or, if they didn't do it at the time, did they do it retrospectively? As to the pitch correction itself, it certainly doesn't sound "better".

As always Fil, very interesting content. I agree, the pitch corrected vocals definitely take away from the natural expression of the professionals, at the same time they hide a lack of talent that would be evident without pitch correction. Pitch correction is a true disservice to the industry. Might as well use a drum machine for rhythm, and a programmed electric piano for accompaniment. Of which might be interesting to analyze some known piano artists and see what you find. Keep up the good work in keeping it real and letting people know what's really going on.

Let's face it....these shows are not truly competitions. There are no rules per se. The producers create the drama and can do whatever they want to encourage viewership. Should they disclose that they've pitch corrected or that a singer is singing to a track....No. The viewer needs to understand that what they're watching is an entertainment show. If they're entertained by what they watch all is good.

And that is why we never again will have masters of music such as Whitney, Freddy and the like. Because today's 'masters' are all artificial and easily replaceable with the next product of pitch correction and thus meaningless.

The old timers keep hiring Beth Hart. I believe she sells more tickets than albums. I find it funny that she sings in different styles for each song so when somebody tried to AI her voice, it sounded nothing like her. Beth Hart was even on a talent show called Star Search in 1993 and she won her category with more perfect scores than any contestant in any category. One of the original songs she sang is still sung by TV singing contestants. I'm sure her own albums are pitch corrected because she works with some big named producers and that's what they do. Maybe the stuff she did with Slash isn't because he had more control of the editing. She isn't afraid to sing while being around the crowd so there are some extreme close ups of fans recording her singing.
