Haven't (obviously) yet watched the video in full, but I'll share something I've felt recently and that is that licences in DBD have reached a point where it doesn't matter what we get, people get bored and start anticipating next shiny thing. The Xenomorph has been one of those licences that was always on top of peoples wishlists and now that they're here they're just one of like 30 killers or whatever. I can see Chucky get same treatment, popular for a month at tops, then coming more rare unless they end up being absolutely busted because surely enough people love playing strong stuff. As I have been listening while typing this; a part for losing people despite gaining popular licences can also be attributed to the unfortunate fact that no matter who gets in game, popular character or no you end up running around pallets and gens, doing same shit with different spices. Gameplay is stale and having another killer with ability to hit bit further or dash at survivor or teleport across the map somehow isn't that new or exciting. For the record, I liked the alien chapter; map is ok, xeno is really nice killer that got into my rotation and while I didn't get ripley she seemed to have couple usable perks, even if not OP.

I kinda disagree with you Chucky is (maybe) being overhyped at this point, but still has a core simple gameplay for both sides (this is a factual point of view) There are small interactive issues with his power, but they dont bother me as much as xeno’s (this is a personal point of view) One thing chucky has that xeno doesnt which might help his longevity is the fun-animation-cartoonish interactions (playerbase loves that shit, myself included) Also, he has a base thing that makes any killer player automatically Feel better once they load into the match: the 3rd person pov! All in all, his inovations didnt afecct surv gameplay versus him when compared to other killers, like xeno did (with the need of preparing turrets, or even wesker’s infection system, both of which kinda hurt solo queue) Only thing chucky has that hurts solo queue is stealth, which we have already seen in a lot of other killers

The new player experience is also just awful, it's easiest to see in the first RE chapter, that brought in a shit ton of people, but hardly any of em stayed. Every chapter that might bring in new players never lasts. This game doesn't really have a playercount problem, but a player RETENTION problem.
@DasFood

I believe you’re spot-on about the “next shiny thing.” Many in this community - myself included, to some extent - enjoy the speculation and anticipation more than the actual gameplay. Kind of like how so many people watched FNAF vids & read the lore but never played the games. Sometimes, the buzz around a game is more fun than the game itself. Hard to see a license having staying power by its own merit at this point, unfortunately. I suppose this is one of the downsides of being a “museum for horror icons”
@Zakon673

"I can see Chucky get same treatment, popular for a month at tops, then coming more rare unless they end up being absolutely busted because surely enough people love playing strong stuff." - this is the healthy progression of every new killer. Popular for the first month so everyone becomes familiar with them, and then becomes just another member of the roster. Survivors don't like getting the same killer too much. Look at Wesker, he basically suffered from success, popular to play as and against. But survivors got sick of him because his popularity never waned like it usually does for killers.

The tail attack often feels unavoidable and there's very little reaction time, the fact that if I get found while lugging a turret it's a damn free hit (just... give us an "oh shit" button that drops and breaks it and adds a cooldown to grabbing a new one or something, or baseline faster walking with it and running drops it), and I guess general burnout from all the tunneling killers. For me i just dont feel like "the alien" when I play xeno. I don't feel like an unstoppable predator sneaking around that could show up at any time, and when I do it's a spectacular blood bath. I feel like a normal killer with a clunky ranged attack that can barely hit over walls with a bad teleport. I understand balance is a thing, but the character fantasy should be kept in tact I feel. When I play as clown, i feel like an insane sicko gleefully playing with my prey, disoroentating them and trapping them in an impossible situation they can't escape. When i play Wesker I feel like a hypermobile badass spreading my infection and masterfully using my predictions of the survivor responses to my advantage. I think thats the main problem. I'd also make it so while in runner mode, if he destroys a turret, he can place down a 1 time portal again but a turret automatically places itself at the entrance to a random tunnel to make him feel more like the alien in the movies that kills, jumps out of sight and plans their next attack, but the survivors have some leeway. The fear of "the alien" is this stalking apex predator that you don't see until it's too late and you have no chance of escaping, not a killer that chases you and catches you because it has a ranged option.

After playing alien isolation, I feel like they shouldn’t have made a crawler mode and instead a running speed boost when entering a chase by passive, you might think wait but blight and legion does that, but they can do it on command I feel like if it was passive after entering chase it would be fair, fire turrets gives the killer (xenomorph) hinderness status effect after it burns you out of the speed. When in the boost it should make the footsteps of the killer louder. And a buff to fire turrets, after it has shot flames at you and gives you a slowness 20% effect it will take at least 40 seconds to ‘regenerate your health’? Or hiding in the vents/tunnels speeds the regeneration by 2 or 3x A balanced speed boost would be cool and as the survivor it would be cool to have some sort of way to fight back not just take away his power that doesn’t really impact the game that much.

I think for Alien specifically, it's one of the few franchises that has so much else going on other than the Xenomorph itself. Obviously that is the staple, but you throw in Ovomorph eggs, facehuggers, queens, and other aspects of the lore of the franchise and you have a lot more that could've been brought to the table, similar to how DBD is handling Resident Evil. I was very disappointed that the chapter didn't utilize Ovomorph eggs/facehuggers in gameplay, since they themselves are still a huge part of the first film. The egg is even on the poster, so it was really disappointing. The chapter was really good, but could've been really great. Aside from the chapter itself, a lot of players left for Texas Chainsaw, and even more left once bugs invaded the game, so it was a really bad time.

This number jumped up by 10,000 over the course of the summer. The drops came in August and September, which is when most people go back to school and don't have as much time to play.

Personally for me. If I'm playing a killer that has an Anti - Loop power / chase power. I want to be able to use it and be in control of it at all times. So Xenomorph although very strong overall during the match, it just doesn't feel good at all to lose your power especially when survivors can place them in clever spots. It ruins the pace of chases and make it feel like you're getting blue balled right as you start chasing someone. I think the flamethrowers should instead make Xenomorph unable to enter his tunnels for a duration if the flame meter reaches max. This is mostly a buff so to compensate for this, Once Xenomorph has landed a tail strike on a survivor he goes back up to his normal stance. His passive recharge rate would be much faster aswell.

For me I loved Alien, been training the main my Queen, but I've had to stop playing cause the community is either so toxic I'm scared to play and adrenaline fucks me, or really nice and it was alright, but the later is so rare, that atm, I'm barely playing and that has nothing to do with the chapters

I think something else to consider is the time it was released. It released in August, which means a lot of people were heading back to school and maynot have had enough time to play. Correct me if I'm wrong, but steam charts looks at average number of players playing at a time and peak players playing at a time, not unique players playing throughout the month, right? Which would mean it wouldn't indicate if more people are playing just for less time and less frequently because real life is getting in the way. (Of course this all means nothing if I'm wrong about how steam charts works lol) and as at least one other person said, alien released at the same time as tcm. Lots of people played that pretty heavily too. But og resident evil and silent hill were all anniversary chapters, right? Which would mean they'd release in the summer when a lot of people are generally less busy and could play more. But overall I was pretty happy with the alien chapter! The xenomorph freaks me out when it's running at you on all fours, and I like using the turrets. It also made me finally watch the movie and I liked it a lot! Ripley is such a badass!

Now, nearly a year after the chapter's release, I still think the Alien chapter is great. Now, I'll admit, I'm a huge Alien fan, so I am a little biased, but the perks are cool and I think Xeno is actually really good. It helps that its gameplay is reminiscent of Dredge, who's my main. I do absolutely hate Nostromo Landing. This was a major disappointment to me. No amount of detail and Easter eggs can make me like this overly big, cluttered mess. And don't even get me started on the damn dinner table loop.

I love to use the Alien because it has so many good build synergies. Both with the actual power, and on a 'lore' aspect. Such as taking Monstrous Shrine and running a build that lets me carry people far and quickly so I can kidnap them and bring them back to the hive (basement).

Alien was my most wanted license to come to the game. However, it ironically landed the week I was in the hospital for the birth of my son... and I haven't been able to play DBD in the months since then 😅😅So I've not even played the chapter 😂😂Really excited for when I can get back for it though, they do look like they did a great job with it overall. Sad to see that it didn't bring in a huge influx of players, but I also wonder how much that is tied to the age of the average DBD player?? It's been a long time since we've had a true Alien movie and even longer still since there was a good one. I'm curious if the license appeals more to an older generation and perhaps that's why something like RE pulled in more new players (ironically, that is also when I started playing DBD)?

Now, I haven't exactly opened twitter in, I wanna say like 3 years, so I wasn't aware it was going around that this was a failure. But I do think some of them have a decent point, from the player loss to the god-awful power (in my opinion because Xeno almost always has M2 ready AND can hit over pallets) I do think, that in perspective of what Behavior probably thought what this chapter would do for their game, it did technically fail. Because of course Behavior was expecting/hoping for an increase in players, obviously, so because that didn't happen and they lost players that it isn't "unfair" to say that the Alien Chapter did fail.

I was seriously looking forward to this chapter, and what I got was kind of a mixed bag. I think the designs and attention to detail was incredible, behavior always does an amazing job honoring major franchises. In terms of mechanics, I think gameplay on killer and survivor sides was a bit disappointing. I thought they were going to embrace a truly "alien" functionality, but it's bipedal animations and motions are a bit bothersome. I wanted an interactive, fluid and ultimately rewarding killing machine. Instead, we got a spearheading-nemesis. It's power is just really unsatisfying to use. Nemesis even has a built in upgrade system for his whip that REWARDS using your power in a fun and interactive way. I will agree that the vent system is clever and I approve of it, but the use of the tail is boring and repetitive- and other than that I'm an M1 killer. I don't have a special pounce, I can't crawl on walls, and I'm not really a stealth killer. Survivor counterplay is slow and clunky- and honestly, against a good xeno; it's a fruitless effort. Turrets can be easily destroyed (even without add-ons) and placing one is slow and takes away precious objective time with no real safety provided. I feel like it's *almooosst* there. Only hopes of fixing it my way is the Freddy treatment unfortunately, can't see that happening anytime soon.

Tbh, Xeno is just an underwhelming K!ller. Imo, Her tail should do more than what it does. Also the turrets make chases tedious, and while the tunnel mechanic is awesome, it gets boring and slightly repetitive. Hide in tunnel and wait to hear a Gen being worked on or you see footsteps. However I love the map. Fair for both sides, looks amazing. Possibly my favorite map 🙂

I did find charts that gives the player count from ALL Platforms together. In this one, there was a slight bump in August but it was very small and a large plummet in September and a huge drop in October. There has been an increase in the last 30 days, likely due to Stranger Things return. I dont think the Alien Chapter was a failure, as I am sure it made plenty of money. I mean for the first all I faced was Alien killers, and I see face them often. But it had dropped in use. I think some disappointments were that Ellen didn't have the likeness of Sigourney Weaver hurt quite a lot (in my opinion anyway), and I think the Alien's powers were underwhelming, as they were just upgrades to other killer's powers. The tunneling is a better Onyra power, and the tail whip is a upgraded Nemesis power. So, while the killer looks great, the powers are uninspiring. Also, while I get the purpose of the turrets, as I play as the killer, they are so annoying to face! Overall, I think the game really needs new gamemodes. I think that will boost it.

I kinda feel like BHVR took some of the shine off Xeno almost immediately, due to their anniversary stream. They let everyone know that the next 2 chapters were licensed, with a "capital L". So, it was easy for everyone to be like "awesome! We got Alien! NOW, what could the next one be?". Didn't exactly put Xeno over like a champ, when everyone was already thinking about who the next killer is. Honestly, Xeno kinda jobbed out to the prospect of who the next killer would be.

I wanted it to lay Eggs and have manual stealth, as a Killer main to me it failed, I didnt want a Nemesis Dredge Combo Killer that plays like the Alien Isolation Ai (Get burned and flee to vents for "optimal") but instead I wanted Pig like ability to drop a Egg & Hugger on Dzarkas little tunnel that holds a dead guy, forces a survivor to go to an area to remove the hugger akin to Jigsaw boxs with a survivor or Mother helping remove it.The movement speed not being removed after you special Bug being removed was fine but then they changed the way the tail hits and it never felt good to me after. Also killers gameplay is still stressfull, unrewarding and simply not fun. Even if u win with a 3k or 4k often the game itself was terrible because the survivors played like some esport elites with all their second chance perks and the VOIP coordination 😅 Aliens perks are also pretty useless, the only perks that are usefull are either anti loop or stop gen rushing. So, in 2021 we saw an average of 76,206 players. In 2022 we saw an average of 61,433. And this year, we saw only 57,090 average users. Now, that's averages which can be unreliable where large spikes or dips are involved... So I also took the median which was 76,073, 58,673, and 53,722 which paints a similar picture but I would argue less dire; here's why: Well, 2021 was an anomaly since that's when we got Resident Evil which to my knowledge caused all time high active player count. Not all of those players were going to stick around, we pretty much knew that. And, really, 5,000 or so active players isn't so bad a loss... That's within the margin of error for fluctuation over time. Less than a 10% decrease in active players. Maybe a shareholder of the company might lose their mind, but we're not shareholders... Especially since they are a privately held company. And I did the math for 2020 and got an Average of 61,406 and a Median of 58,694... So around the same numbers as 2022. So I would have to concur, the game is not dying... Although, it does appear to be in a bit of a slump at the moment. But now, I am thinking about Otzdarva's recent video about how downright unfriendly this game is to new players... And thinking about my own experience recently in a game that had a hacker (or if their claim is to be believed... The game glitched) but also had a complete novice: failing-from what I can tell-every skill check, utterly abhorrent in chase, kept running into me on deathhook... There was only so much I could do to avoid tunneling them out of the game, and the constant gen explosions were just getting annoying. But all the maps, the perks, the killer powers... That's a lot for new people, or even returning people. So increasing that number might really be a struggle without redoing what I earlier called an anomaly. Originally there was going to be a somewhat neutral if not positive conclusion here, but then I added the bit about the slump now here we are. I am definitely not pessimistic, currently... But it might be a bit worrying should we enter into this next year and we find a downward trend.

There is quite over a million possible reasons someone stopped playing. It's a really bad metric to judge on. Especially trying to mainly link it to DLC. You have updates, events, specific games, toxicity, new perk that annoys, perk not being good, perk being too buffed, new mechanic, FOMO, etc. For outside DBD, you have other games, console/pc dying, friends stopped playing, real life duties, holidays, work, school, funerals, hospitalization, etc.

i think you're totally right. i stopped playing dbd a year ago, xenomorph was the only thing that almost made me want to come back until this next chapter with sable. with a new killer and survivor to look forward to i'm finally back in the game. i don't think i would attribute any particular chapter to the loss in player count in the game. i personally stopped playing because i was tired of being disappointed with behavior's changes time after time after time. the game was just becoming un-fun, it had nothing to do with chapters; it had everything to do with nerfs and reworks and buffs that made me lose what i loved about this game. i was one of the people constantly begging for a xenomorph killer, but even when they added it, i still had a sour taste in my mouth for the game overall and it wasn't ENOUGH to bring me back, but again, it was tempting. i don't think i'm alone in this, i believe the state of the game overall is a lot more impactful than any chapter could hope to be. it would be cool to play as "X" killer or survivor but if the game is still not fun why would anyone come back just to cosplay a character and still not enjoy themselves? being fresh back in the game, i'm enjoying myself for now, haven't jumped into survivor yet but we'll see in time if the game has moved in a more bearable direction to hold my interest

I’m not claiming this to be the sole reason that it lost players, but I do believe it was because of xeno being overturned on release. Not even a dodge of the tail attack would reward the survivor with distance and even now I’d argue since they’ve fixed that there’s still plenty of un-interactive elements about xeno’s power (when playing against them). Also coupled with that, fast vaults were extremely clunky on the release of xeno, rendering going for fast vaults pointless since they gave you the same distance as medium vaults. To summarise it was both the fact that xeno was miserable to go against on release, as well as the game generally feeling terribly optimised for survivor. That’s just from my account though, because I was one of those players that couldn’t enjoy the game when the chapter dropped.

i think there are 2 contributing factors. the first being that alien, as scary as the first movie was, is not really a "horror" icon. it's more of a sci-fi icon with a few terror elements in it. i think it fits in with dbd and their "lore" but i can understand why it wouldnt bring in as many people as they had hoped. personally, this is exactly what i needed to come back to the game after taking almost a year long break. i apparently left at the right time because the next 2 killers were knight and skull merchant, both of whom did more damage to the game than alien, springtrap, or even jason would have fixed in the same amount of time. obviously there are always people that like them, but in a general sense, these characters are not that well liked. that brings me to my next point: after almost a year of killers ranging from terrible to mid (singularity is alright, but i dont see him that much either), people are just burned out of dbd. i can name at least 3 content creators who left the game to pursue other ventures, most notably TCM. in that sense, one can argue that alien actually helped mitigate the losses; without this chapter, maybe they would have bled more players.

At a certain point, no amount of license hype can make up for the game being poorly balanced and not fun. They need to rework several killers to be more fun to play against, rework several maps, rework perks on both sides (they just addressed MFT, but on the killer side Ultimate Weapon and Pentimento come to mind), and fix things like slugging and possibly overall gen speed. The game just has huge parts of it that are extremely unfun, and poorly designed. Plain and simple. Also frankly we need more map variety. Nostromo was a breath of fresh air, but we need more.
