I love the point you made about not potting/caring for hoyas as if they are succulents, because they are definitely not! I’ll be trying the mix you made with a few small hoya cuttings I received!

I used for my first hoyas mix that Im using for my aroids (also Im using for aroids open pots like that, easy to drain and to seeeeee 😁 ) with little bit more bark and for now its ok, some have new leafs already and I have them just 2 months (but that are "easy" beginners hoyas...) So if I ever get some more hoyas (hopefull shine in my eyes 😍) maybe some of them will be harder to keep, and maybe I will need to change something like insted normal soil in the mix to use moss.. I like experimenting with aroids but Im very careful with hoyas because I dont know them...

I’m so glad you are encouraging others to experiment with media because imho growing plants well is a nexus of the right environmental conditions and media and watering culture that works in those conditions so everyone will have different experiences! We all like advice but we really must be brave and try new things as well. Thanks for sharing your insight and inspiring people to grow intuitively.

I definitely agree. Who knows, maybe this wouldn't work in your home and maybe something you do wouldn't work in my home. Doesn't mean either of us are wrong. Different things work in different places. I think it is good to think about these things and to experiment and learn. It's one of the things I appreaciate the most with MissOrchidGirl for example. Nothing was wrong with my mix before, but this seems to work better. So I am glad I tried it. Thank you for watching all the time 💚

My mix was good too, but I felt it could be better. I still don't know if this is the best mix. Maybe it is, maybe it is not. I just wanted to experiment to see how it goes. I am also an underwaterer. If you tell me a plant doesn't like to be watered too much you can be sure I will go above and beyond reason with underwatering 😂 It's like water is gold haha. But I learned it's best to have a super well draining mix and I think net pots help as well with air ciculating and making sure nothing rots. Haha, sending my love back to them!

As soon as you put your video on the new soil mix out, I transferred most of my hoyas to moss + bark as well. Most of them were still in coconut husk and they were struggling. I am using orchid pots (think clear plastic with lots of holes) with the new mix tho and it looks like I used a lot more moss than you did. It's too soon to tell if they're doing better, but I have high hopes :)

I love to use orchid pots too! Not too many of them around here though. Yeah, more moss is fine, especially in drier environment. Sometimes I get lazy and I wish I used a bit more moss with some of them. I hope the mix works out for you!

Loved the video! Thank you for the amazing info. I’m a avid Hoya collector and am always trying new medium mixtures. My only thought on this is how do you maneuver roots out of netted pots when it’s eventually time to repot?
@BasiePlants
3 жыл бұрын
I would soak for a bit to see if that will help, but I also saw that people just pot with the net pot in a bigger pot - it's not that uncommon since there are a lot of spaces for the roots to get through. When I repot, I will make sure to do it on camera! :)

Hi Miro! This was very interesting. I see below that you fertilize with orchid fertilizer and seaweed fertilizer. I have Superthrive, would that work as a substitute for the seaweed fertilizer? I have most of my Hoyas in a mixture of potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, charcoal and worm castings. No exact ratio, just "eyeballed", and I think it is too chunky, so may repot and add the sphagnum moss and put in orchid net pots. I have them in terra cotta now and wish I would have put them in net pots to start with. Oh well, live and learn! LOL! I'm still new to your channel and am going to watch the unboxing video to see how you did the layers. I do love the chit chat parts btw. Thank you so much for sharing!
@BasiePlants

Superthrive is excellent as additional vitamin! We have Superdrive over here. Superthrive is way too expensive. Seaweed isn't necessary really, but I use it occassionaly because it gives me good results. Ah, it happens. I had mine in terra cotta pots too. I had a terra cotta phase. :) As you said, you live and you learn! Haha I am glad you love the chit chat parts :D I usually cut them out 😂 I think I talk too much.

I am new to hoyas and . My thought on them are no matter what the medium is as long as it drains fast and it is a resonable pot size they will grow. I have notice the light seems to be what affects them most. Some don't apreciate lights as much as others. If a hoya hasn't changed in a while i check the soil then change the light the hoys recieves. Most of the time the plant begins to thrive after the change.
@BasiePlants
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, light is extremely important, but I think some mixes also work better than others. It really depends on your conditions. For some, the mix is cruical. Thankfully, I don't have Hoyas that are that challenging yet. (but for example, Hoya undulata is very picky when it comes to that).

I've been growing plants for many many years, but this year I've been bitten by the hoya bug (it really chomped down!) and would like to increase my collection. First of all, where do you purchase your hoyas from? Secondly, I like the tan outer pots you are using (where are they purchased?) and especially the net pot ideas. I grow my hoyas in sphagnum moss, orchid bark and perlite too, and they seem to love it, but I think I will move them over to net pots in the spring. We're moving into the fall now and they'll be coming back inside soon, so I'll leave them through the winter and repot in the spring. I enjoy your videos, as there is always something to learn. Keep up the good work and I wish you all the best in all your future endeavors.

The net pots seem to work well, it really makes it easy for you to see when a plant needs watering. There is also the benefit of reduced rot. It may need more water though. The plastic pots are made by a company here in Serbia so I think they are not available anywhere else. I agree, hoya bugs don't bite, they are too violent 😂

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that! It could be many things. I am not sure on properties of mulch, I think it is treated differently than bark that is meant for orchids. I am not sure if that would be enough to cause issues. Were the roots good? Were they too long in transit?

Thanks again Miro for this video. I've heard so many complaints about Hoya-roots rotting in sphagnum moss, and I think you are right; just watch the watering, and be careful not to compact the roots too tightly in it. I have a few cuttings of cv Mathilde, and Sunrise rooting, and D. Cummingii re-rooting in sphagnum moss. How much of the sphagnum moss do you recommend removing when transplanting to your new 'Miro-potting mix'?

Please share the ratio for this new mix. Moss:bark:perlite - thank you!
@BasiePlants
4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, there isn't an exact ratio. I put some moss on the bottom, and then I put some bark, the cutting, a bit more moss and then top layer of bark. I tried to connect layers of moss together for a wicking effect. I show this in the potting video. I don't think perlite is essential. I just eyeballed it. This method is used by orchid growers to. If you head to MissOrchidGirl's channel you can see how she layers it. It's not a homogenous mix, so it's more just making sure there is something wicking (moss) that will distribute moisture to the bark (bark is not wicking and it doesn't hold on to moisture well, so if you just use bark, it will be very dry very quickly). Coco peat has a similar effect but I prefer moss.
