I did this book years ago when I worked in graphic design. I was suffering from burnout. Graphic design has that effect on you. I did this book cover to cover and 2 things happened- I started reading comic books and I started drawing again. I still recommend this book to creatives.

God is the reason my creative process changed for the better. More cx interest, sales, gallery invites, etc. Artists Way got me out the house to enjoy nature, explore more (alone). It helped me write about my inner struggles, journey, etc

Hiya Roxy. Just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience with this book. I'm an illustrator living in Paris and I've had this book on my shelf for over 10 years. Since I bought it I moved to Spain and back to France.... and for some reason I kept moving around countries and carrying the book. I think it is now the time to do the program, so thank you for your insights!!!!!

Hats off to you for doing the entire 12 weeks. I could never do something like this because I struggle to commit to agendas set by other people. I've just come out of a long slump. I was making art during that time but was struggling to get into any kind of routine and it often just felt like a giant slog. Many of the things I did to turn things around were similar to what is recommended in the book - get out more, particularly in nature etc... Finding joyful expression of your creativity is key. Yes, sometimes you just want to make a cute thing out of ceramic clay or whatever. Not every mark you make or every work you make has to be an earth shattering work of art. Those gentle, playful expressions of creativity feed into that more "important" work.

Thanks for your comment! I totally understand, whenever the word ‘planning’ comes up I just go into resist mode, hehe. I think it worked this time because it was ‘only’ 12 weeks and it felt doable in my regular routine. Also, if I didn’t do my morning pages, artist date or tasks for example I just gave myself a do-over and didn’t beat myself up about it. Best lesson of this course haha.

Wow! You did such an amazing job going through this book! I purchased this book and all of the companion books to use with it YEARS ago. Still, I have not read through the book entirely. After watching your video, I have written “The Artist’s Way” in my 2024 goals section in my planner. You are also such a joy to watch! Thank you!

It continues because one never understands it all in one Go. I have a book that I have read three times, and I may revisit it in the future. Each time I reread it, I think OH MY! I must have missed this in the first (or second) reading, as I am different from the person I was when I first did the reading. And btw I will review the Artist Way book again over the holidays/vacation days for December/January. Great recap of the Artist Way.

Not "better" but two people whose work I like a lot for jump-starting creativity are Austin Kleon (recommended: Steal Like An Artist) and Lynda Barry (recommended: Making Comics and Picture This)

@@dullroar2673 I love Austin Kleon's books but I really should consult them more often. I can't get into the whole Lynda Barry thing, though. I see why people love her work, but it's not for me.

This book did nothing for me. I felt I wasted a bunch of time on those morning pages and could have used that time doing three pages of art in my art journal instead. Plus the religious god stuff was a big turn off and I won’t read that book again because of that.

About time someone commented it didn’t work for them 😂 a pity it didn’t! Are you art journaling now? I’m not religious at all so I just read over the god stuff, but I’ve heard people really being turned off by it. Guess it’s personal preference.

@@whatsaroxy I've been doing art journaling for years and still am. I just wish that instead of wasting time writing three pages every morning about nothing I had instead spent the time doing three pages of art. I'll never get that time back. What a waste. What I hoped for from that book was a creativity surge that the majority of people claim that they got from it. All I read was the same stuff I've read in the past from other books. Nothing new or inspiring.

If art journaling works for you, go do that right :-) the morning pages worked really well on weekdays for me but not on the weekends so i stopped doing them on the weekend. Whatever works to get what you want!

@@whatsaroxy Art journaling wasn’t the issue for me. Like I said, I’ve been doing that for years. It’s the fact that that book got a lot of hype from people who actually got something out of it. For me, and others, it didn’t do anything and it’s good for people to know that they shouldn’t go into the book thinking and expecting they will see a big change with their creativity. It doesn’t work for everyone. For me, I’ll look into other writers and see if there are more modern, up to date books on creativity that would suit me better.
