@@Boiler149 Watch the purdue media 18 minute interview with painter, he confirmed that he did indeed ask back and Painter said "nah, its better that we part ways"

@@blakewidmer That's still quite a bit different than the Purdue fan narrative that's been spread around. Painter basically said that Kanon tried to come back the next day like it was business as usual, but Painter felt like Catchings would be better off finding somewhere he's happy and that he wouldn't guarantee a role. So initially there may have been an opportunity for Purdue to smooth things over and they were unwilling to do that. But that's a pretty far cry from "Kanon cried and begged for his spot back".

Right I agree. It sounds like Catchings was reconsidering because maybe his family was encouraging him to stay closer to home. But let’s just move on. Painter seems to have been honest and upfront. And Kanon went back and forth on if he wanted to risk not getting as much playing time or playing further away from home. The next day Kanon was asking if he still had an option there and Painter just wanted to move on. No harm or foul with any of this. Let’s wish him well. Good luck Painter and Purdue. We can all move on till November when they play. Then it’s gonna give the media something to talk about again

It wouldn't surprise me if he did want back. Go back and look at his recruiting history. He had committed then decommitted then recommitted. Now he decommitted again. That boy is very emotional. Good kid though. Great family. Wish him the best of luck. You do realize Neubert was actually indicating exactly what you two said. That he could have lied or made promises, like all the other coaches out there, but paint wouldn't do that. So if paint lied or made promises catchings is probably at Purdue. Great content as always.

Greg nailed it with the family wanting him at Purdue but ever since Kanon went to OTE he had people in his ear that had him questioning it. I was very surprised Painter addressed it as candidly as he did yesterday but he was standing up for his program a bit. It could sound a little, "you can't break up with me because I break up with you," but I understand where he came from. This was at least the 2nd time his family had him slinking back to Painter to re-commit and Matt apparently said Nah this go around.

If you’re a top-40 recruit, there’s always an opening. But from the standpoint of running a program, a coach has to decide how to manage their talent. What does bringing him back tell the guys who are vying for that playing time next year? What does bringing him back tell a recruit that is looking to come here next year or the year after? Painter has built a top-10 program that dominates their conference by developing talent. Chasing after someone who might only stay for one year could cause a ripple effect over the next 3-5 years.

To be clear, I wish Kanon the best and hope to see him on a NBA roster one day. Would have loved to see what he brought to Mackey this fall. But it’s a business on both sides and both sides decided to part ways. Colvin and Heide will likely have additional opportunities to shine.

Seeing that Catchings had already done this a couple of times I believe Painter saw it as a pattern and not a good one. I think Catchings would have been a locker room cancer especially on a team where the only promises you get are a great education and a chance to compete for a starting position. I think Painter made the right call especially in light of Brian Neubert's comments as he is not one to embellish or exaggerate.

He’s an 18 year old kid. It sucks when good recruits don’t end up at your school. But don’t bad-mouth a kid who didn’t say anything bad about Purdue. This just shows your insecurity. It doesn’t make your school any worse. His OT elite coach says he is a good kid who plays hard and the right way and comes from a good family. You know nothing about him. Don’t tell me you’ve never gone back and forth on a big decision. Doesn’t seem like Painter has patience for that. It looks like he runs a tight ship. Good for him. Probably wasn’t Kanons style anyways, which Painter could see.

Followed this minute-by-minute in real time. Neubert said exactly that in a video before Catching allegedly asked back. When the rumor he asked back came to light Neubert tweeted what he already said days before . All-in-all Neubert’s point was - instead of Painter releasing the NIL during the original call, he could’ve tried to talked Kannon out of the cold feet which had happened multiple times throughout his recruitment

There are a lot of Purdue "fans" (especially the ones that never attended there) that have no clue as to the importance of "culture" to a program like Purdue's. All they care about is the number of "stars" a kid has coming out of HS and if he is from Indiana. In the long run to the success of the team, BOTH are irrelevant. History has proven that over and over again. Paint is way too stand-up of a guy to lie or make promises just to land a kid that will ruin team chemistry the minute he perceives the promises aren't being kept. Good luck at BYU, Kanon. That wasn't sarcastic. I truly hope it works out as you want it to there.

Newbert's comment was on the Gold & Black message board, not on Twitter. Also, he was simply alluding to the fact that Painter and staff could have either a) offered him a compromise to at least promise minutes or b) basically tell him to sleep on it (as they did the last few times) and maybe he would have eventually changed his mind. In the end, Painter likely knew this was going to be a consistent pattern of uncertainty with Catchings and simply didn't want to deal with it anymore.
