oh lagoon, what a mess. catamarans are fairly newish, but I just don't like the pontoon design for an ocean crosser. Island hopping in the tropics...absolutely. 5 foot plus swells, you're just tempting geometry. lagoon needs to be able to make money by "mini-mass" producing, but the workmanship is in question. between parly revival and nahoa...I just don't have the confidence in the brand.

Ben, Balsa core boats or any boat with a structural component made of wood is a risk. They will all fail, at some point. There doesn't have to be any leaks, just condensation accumulation over time. Before you begin reconstruction, I would suggest a hall-out and devise a method of trying the hull back to it's original specifications (i.e..supporting/raising the bridge deck until it is level again) I've been watching since the problem started and I like your channel. This repair will give sailboat owners and buyers a lot of valuable information. Kudo's for your efforts and thank you for sharing. Cheers! Blue Skies, Fair Winds, and Following Seas. When you string a stringline to detect flatness you should put 1" (or so) blocks of wood under each endpoint. Then to check flatness you run a small block of the same dimensions along the line to check for flatness in two directions, up and down. Then mark with a pencil each area where the line is plus or minus flatness. Best of luck with the project, this will take a lot of patience. It looks like you are up for the task- Cheers-

Make sure you inspect the bulkhead for water infiltration and rotten parts. It is an issue with L400 and maybe yours too. Look at the mast base and support on the main bulkhead, that is where it all starts on some models. In the 400 usually right behind the water tanks. Hope this helps.

Remove every square inch of rotten core, replace it with the most expensive foam available, epoxy resin, and high tech glass and you will still have a criminally under designed high windage long keel small catamaran. (With a 3/4" thick plywood primary bulkhead!) Nurse it back to the USA and find a sucker to buy it, (if your conscience allows..) With what you've learned you can start over with a proper sea boat. Unless your budget is a lot larger than the market value of your Lagoon, it will be a monohull.

Ben, when putting the core down bed it in epoxy bog, not just resin. Ideally you will vaccum bag it in place. If not get some heavy weights. You want the bog to come out of the sides to make sure you do not have air pockets. Better still pay an experienced boat builder to do it for you. Good luck and I hope you do not get too itchy. A good reason to use peel ply(no sanding).

I repaired a racing keel boat that I purchased in full knowledge that it had been butchered to the point of structurally breaking up to make it lighter, I used Divinycell contour foam core sheet to reline the inside of the hull between bulkheads in the centre of the hull using 3M hollow glass microspheres as a filler with resin making an adhesive, then re-bonding the deck to the hull where it has come apart. Divinycell is available in a range of densities which is also used in the aircraft industry as I researched. I used multiple layers of 1 1/2 ounce chopped strand matt fibreglass at the time over joins and the Divinycel , thinking that like plywood, more thin layers are better that one layer. Speaking to 3M's head chemist in Australia back in the day was really helpful confirming that this form of adhesive was suitable for laminating the Divinycell to the hull. I have used DHL to send packages globally, 3 days usually, one week during Covid if that helps.

So sorry to hear about the the rotten core. My heart goes out to you, It seems that balsa core rot is inevitably. I've heard of so many boats that get it. But you are right that it would be foolhardy to set off across the Indian Ocean with it in that state. The only good news is that you have found the cause and with a lot of hard work, mess and cost it is something that can be remedied. And I know you have the endurance to push through it and get on your way again. I hope you findv the materials and it goes as smoothly as possible.

My question is where did the water make its way through? I've never liked fiber over wood core. Its basically a wooden boat thats covered by a thin layer of fiberglass. If there were any punctures or leaks, the wood would suck up moisture and spread to other parts of the wood like a wicking fabric. Foam core is the way to go. Foam punctures are self sealing and water resistant. Atleast Lagoon made the bottom half with foam core.

As mentioned in a previous comment, there are some issues with similar later versions where water would accumulate near that forward bulkhead. I had to apply a fix to our L400 in order to get the water a drainage path. I can’t believe how much water was trapped because there were no way for any trapped water to drain. Luckily we got to it before any damage set in. Take a look at Lagoon Technical Notice 16006. I can send a copy if needed. Although it addresses the issue in the 400, it might be similar in your case. Something to look.

Ben, the good balsa core, forward of the rotten material, needs to be sealed urgently as it is absorbing moisture from the air and will rot on you. I remember C&C yachts in Ontario back in the 70's used to use balsa but they sucked the resin all the way through the core when vaccum bagging it so that the balsa would not rot. And when I lived in Nova Scotia I was told that balsa core, wrapped in plastic, inside it's cardboard box would rot if left on a bare concrete floor within a month. So either dig out all exposed balsa or seal it with epoxy right after exposing it to the air.

Wow ! I'm glad that you found the problem , sorry it's such a big problem . Let me pre warn you first before you begin sanding and grinding. Wear protective clothes ,mask and goggles that protect you from the dust and fumes . Create a negative pressure work area so that dust doesn't escape. It travels everywhere and is a real trouble to clean after . .. Get more fiberglass and epoxy and cups and stir sticks , cleaner and sand paper and a vacuum cleaner made for fine dust .. Waiting for supplies will prevent you from ever finishing . Stay positive and don't burn out ... it's a big job . I've watch videos of boat owners doing what you are about to do . Work clean and dust free when laying epoxy and fiberglass . It won't stick if it ain't a clean surface . Good luck . I hope the damage hasn't spread very far . Take care !

This is why you must re-bed all deck hardware periodically. Regarding the rotted core...I saw a video of someone repairing their rotted cockpit floor core using an expanding foam that hardens solid. Very interesting what they did. I think it was a Valiant 40. Maybe the sailboat is named Moxie. I own a Valiant 40 and subscribe to a email list. I will put out some feelers regarding the foam. Might be an easier way to repair. Drill some holes that could be used to dig out the rotted balsa and then you inject this foam through the same holes. You should find and watch the video. I noticed a crack running along the front bulkhead directly under the front opening port light. I should think that whole area should be tabbed to the hull and window wall you might want to do some exploration there as well. If you cannot find core material there , possibly look at using what we call here in Bc. " Styrofoam SM" It comes in many thickness and is used underground in wet areas of home building. When laminated with epoxy to the gel coat layer and then epoxy'ed to the interior surface layer becomes structural foam. CHEERS AND GOOD HUNTING Steve h.

So pleased you are doing this work. The other key activity, apart from the repair, is finding the source of the water ingress and eliminating it so that your repairs stay sound.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen the “Laundry Room” on Nahoa, glad to see you guys keep your spirits up and confront any issues head on, the most important thing is you have each other, everything else is just stuff and will sort itself out eventually. 💗😎👍🤙

I feel your pain. Stay with it. Stay strong and this too will pass. It sucks that such an expensive boat has these types of structural problems. It looks bad for the boat builder but the ocean is one of the toughest environments for a machine to perform in. This story gives boat buyers a warning that just because something looks good doesn't mean it is good. Hang in.

Good news that you found the issue, so now you can focus on getting it properly fixed. Things would be so much worse if you and the family were sailing around unaware. I'm cheering for you.

I'm sorry to see the amount of damaged Nahoa has suffered, but she is in good hands! You are the best Skipper!
