My personal experience is most of the hard woods split better than a lot of the soft woods. Particularly when it come to knotty wood. Sure cedar and birch split like a dream for the most part, but I’d rather split 2 cords of Madrona or maple than a half cord of some of the pines I’ve seen. Pro tip for anyone who wants it, split knotty pieces of hardwood when it’s below freezing, preferably well below freezing. It will snap apart like a dream if it’s not over seasoned. Appreciate the videos, can’t wait to see you showing folks the way you split different 20 years from now, but I love the energy!

@davideloewen
Ай бұрын
Speaking from a woodworking perspecitve here, but harder woods (especially those with straighter grains) are typically more prone to splitting and cracking, so while they will dull sawblades quicker, you also typically need to pre-drill your holes before driving nails or screws to prevent splitting. Softer woods like pine (white not yellow) or spruce often won't split out even without pre-drilling. The relationship is analagous to the way harder materials like glass are more prone to cracking than softer materials like aluminum or copper. To be fair, this isnt a universal correlation, some relatively soft woods like cedar and cypress are both soft and prone to splitting. All that said, his ability (absolute unit or not) to split a very hard and dense wood is not necessary suprising given that what we often think of when we consider the "strength" of a material is really a not at all straightforward set of properties including shear, compressive, and tensile strength, hardness, brittleness and other things like the materials ability to be elastic. All of these properties do not necessarily vary proportionally from material to material. For example, steel is very strong in tension, concrete is great for compression, thsi is why rebar is used to reinforce concrete structures Or this- A steel beam of a certain weight will be weaker than a wooden beam of the same weight, while a steel beam of the same exterior dimensions (volume) as a wooden beam will be much stronger, because the strength to weight ratio of wood is higher than steel, while the strength to volume ratio of steel is higher than wood. In the spirit of full disclosure my hardwood experience has been with woods like hickory, oak, walnut, hedge etc. not manzanita

Tropical hardwoods tend to work like this, but for instance black ironwood or quebracho (it's a dry tropical broadleaf, but closer to temperate hardwoods in relation) are both well know to be hard to split. All the harder temperate hardwoods around the world are more difficult to split.
@davideloewen

@@StopTryingSoHard interesting. I've been mulling this over in my head recently, and I was wondering, Do you know if those harder-to-split woods have a straight grain? I was thinking that the softness of the wood (or its flexibility)in combination with a less straight grain would make for a wood fiber profile that would be a bit more like a stretchy net (catching the axe rather than getting out of its way), while a harder straight grain wood with less flexible fibers would mean the wood fibers are more independent (and would sooner move aside than catch an axe because they aren't entangled)... Almost like a bundle of raw spaghetti vs a bowl of cooked spaghetti

Hey i used to cut trees down for a living, manzanita is no where near dense enough by its self to throw sparks.The sparks that are commonly seen when cutting down manzanita is from the growth process it takes on as a shrub or tree depending on the evergreen it is. Basically when the Manzanita is growing, it picks up small rocks and anything else that might be on the ground next to it while it’s growing and overtime that stuff makes it into the core wood of the tree. The rest is history you cut with with the chainsaw and sparks start flying, but it’s not because of the manzanita itself. It’s because of the stones and other obstacles inside of it.

As a welder I knew how this was going to go. The harder metal or wood is the easier it will be to break. This is why in metallurgy we have alloys. You can have hard metal that is not brittle because the molecules are held tightly by a softer metal which varies the shock. If you do the same test with a softer wood I bet you start having problems trying to split it. Some metals will explode if hit hard enough.

I’ve worked in wildland fire for a few years now and manzanita is by far some of the most annoying wood to cut cause of its density and the way it grows has a tendency to throw your chain a lot if you switch your cutting angle.

Hardness often increases how brittle something can be. I had a tungsten ring and decided to hit it with a hammer. It did net bend one bit, but it did shatter.
